IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO Extracts From Files of The Gazette Issued Half a Century and a Quarter of a Century Ago. These Files Contain the Only Authentic History in Print of the Daily Doings of the Citizens of Anaheim and Orange County in the Days of the Pioneers. 50 Years Ago July 16, 1891 It is understood that the School Trustees yesterday decided to elect F. E. Little of Pomona to be principal of our school. It is also reported that M. R. Pendleton, who taught at Orange-thorpe last year will succeed Edwin Clark as principal of the Fullerton school. E. R. McKinney has been elected Principal of the Placentia school. Lewis R. Tarr, a graduate of the Los Angeles State Normal School has been appointed teacher of the Orangethorpe school. For growing large strawberries Alex Wright takes the prize. He often goes into the patch and picks a bucket full, none of which are smaller than a walnut. He has also a fine crop of raspberries and musk melons coming on, and has lately gone quite extensively into the poultry business, having upwards of two hundred turkeys and chickens. Our citizens have a splendid chance to visit the Charleston and Itata, now lying at San Diego, by going on one of the Southern California excursions, twice a day, $3.50 for the round trip. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday the vessels will be open to the public. The trip can be made from here in a day, leaving at 9 A.M. and returning at 8 P.M. W. W. Scott, who recently purchased a place east of town will improve the same by setting out an orchard of various kinds of 25 Years Ago July 20, 1916 The Valencia orange industry in this section and contiguous territory has grown to wonderful proportions. Many thousands of acres have during the past several years been set to that fruit, and the product from a five-year-old orchard is something that helps swell the bank roll. Good fruit brings good prices and the orchardist who understands the citrus culture may class himself as living on Easy street. This condition augers well for the community, whereas the thousands of individual owners, with their bulging pay envelopes at harvest time, put stability into the avenues of business throughout the many prosperous communities forming this matchless section. The citrus industry is the backbone of the country. The lemon market with the coming of hot weather in the East and Middle West, is skylarking in a manner that should delight the California lemon grower. The Orange County Fruit Exchange sold lemons in the East at $7.50 per box and indications are that the price will go higher. The exchange sales were outside the citrus auction. It is stated that the lemon market outlook for the remainder of the season is promising as by the time the cooler weather strikes the East the heaviest part of the California crop will have been moved. S. C. Hartranft and family have started for a trip eastward and FULLERTONIAN HONORED AT SHOWER FRIDAY Miss Jeannetta Saviers and Arlene Peek were hostesses layette shower given in honor Mrs. Peggy Peek in Fullerton former Miss Peggy Cypher of Habra, at 843 N.
