Midget Horses of Grand Canyon To Be Exhibited in Anaheim
MIDGET HORSES MUST GO
America's weirdest contribution to the world of "Freakiana" shortly will go on display in Anaheim.
They are the "midget horses of the Grand Canyon,"—no larger than dogs. They are real, honest-to-goodness horses, not ponies and not a separate species, but just as much horses as ol' Dobbin or Nellie, the sorrel mare.
These midgets are interesting as an example of the manner in bone structure, descendants of the normal herd have degenerated into the present pigmy equinines, weighing from 30 to 65 pounds. But they have survived.
Ernest W. Ritter, Pasadena artist and explorer, first heard about the midget horses in 1928 from an old trapper in the North Rim country.
INDIAN TOLD THE STORY
He was the lone survivor of a band of Indians whose wives and

which all living things somehow or other adapt themselves to whatever conditions they must face, and survive amid the most unsympathetic surroundings.
TRAPPED IN CANYON
They are descendants of a herd of Indian horses that generations ago was trapped by some cataclysm of nature in the Grand Canyon. Due to lack of water, semi-starvation and complete lack of food containing calcium for children—and horses—were trapped in the canyon. The humans succumbed, but the horses lived.
In 1941, Ritter and a friend returned to the canyon, lowered themselves into its depths by long ropes and captured three of the midgets.
These will be on display tomorrow and Saturday at 133 E. Center St., Anaheim.

Anaheim Draft Quota Reduced
Exemption of Married Men Frees 5 From Army Duty; Draftee Fails to Appear
The National Selective Service Board's most recent ruling resulted in reducing Anahemi's quota of draftee for induction on July 9 from an original total of 13 to eight.
Shortly before the 13 men slated for induction July 9, were to leave Anaheim, Robert Winchell, secretary of the local Selective Service board, received a telegram from the national board advising him that married men and men more than 28 years of age were not to be sent to the induction stations.
FIVE IN QUOTA MARRIED
Five of the thirteen men are married and were notified that they need not report for induction. They are Louis A. Cloud, Norbert T. Elmers, David L. Hughes, Lyndon Carman, Jr., and Roy A. Musch.
The eight others are Fred M. Fukuda, Robert C. Ledford, Benne B. Basse, Frank K. Webber, Rito C. Acosta, Ralph E. Wiman, Fred J. Cordonnier and Alexander J. Lopez.
DRAFTEE FAILS TO REPORT
For all practical purposes, the recent ruling exempts all amrriemen from the draft and those over 28 years old. All married men except those who married avoid the draft, are exempt. All officials admit that it is impossible to prove that an individual has married to escape military service.
Lopez failed to put in an appearance at the Anaheim Selective Service board office in hall, and Winchell announced that he will report the matter to United States district attorney possible action and notify Lopez appear for induction in the Ju-21 quota.
