OLD AGE AID AND CENTRALIZATION
Those in Orange county and California, generally, who have been receiving their livelihood from our state aid to the aged law, have had brought home to them in bold relief the vice of centralization of power such as has taken place in American government during the last decade.
Several years ago, the California legislature passed a statute which permitted recipients of our old age aid law to work in gainful employment, not to exceed a $15 monthly salary, without being pluralized in the amount received under the state law.
Up to a $20 maximum of a recipient's warrant is paid by the federal government, with funds raised through federal taxation; and, a few months ago, the federal social security board, under threat of withholding the federal contribution to California, told this state that the $15 casual employment provision of our law would have to be repealed.
No one ought to criticize the California law, for, viewed from any angle, this has been a good thing. Not only has it permitted the elderly citizen of this state to bolster his income, but beyond that, and what is far more important, it has given him something to occupy his time and sustain his interest in things.
But congress, in the federal statute, laid down the rules under which the federal government would contribute monies to the state, and—with the threat of losing a federal subvention this year of about $38,000,000, California submitted.
The old Jeffersonian theory of "home rule" and states' rights has just about gone out the window. Maybe it would be a good thing for states in matters of this kind, to establish their own systems.

Church Services
CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH
Communion Services will be conducted on Sunday in all Churches of Christ, Scientist. The subject of the Lesson-Sermon is "Sacrament" and the Golden Text is from John: A new commandment I give unto you That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another."
A Bible citation presents these passages also from John "Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat, They answered him. No. And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. . . As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. . . Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. . . This is now the third time that Jesus showed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead."
Selections from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, state: "What a contrast between our Lord's last supper and his last spiritual breakfast with his disciples in the bright morning hours at the joyful meeting on the shore of the Galilean Sea!" "Like our Master, we must depart from material sense into the spiritual sense of being."

Bishop Desmond Tells Panacea For World Ills
Asserts Man's Failure To Love Thy Neighbor' Causes Tricks and Trouble
The commandment, "Love thy neighbor as thyself" was prescrib-ed as a panacea for the ill that best the world by the Most Rev. Daniel Desmond, Catholic bishop of Alexandria, La.
Bishop Desmond is the guest of the Rev. Father Henry Gross, pastor of St. Boniface Catholic church. He said the children's mass Sunday and delivered a sermon on "The Practical Life of a Christian."
Failure to observe this commandment by man, both as individuals and as nations, has brought about all the trials and tribulations which now afflict mankind, the bishop said.
TWO CHIEF COMMANDMENTS
"The two chief commandments," he told his congregation, "are 'Love Thy God' and 'Love Thy Neighbor'. The other eight com-
O. H. Heft Funeral Services Held
Funeral services for Otto H. Heft, 75 who died early last week at Waterloo, S.D., where he was visiting his son Myron, were held yesterday afternoon from Hi-garden's mortuary. He was buried beside his wife in Anaheim cemetery.
In addition to the son, survivors are a daughter, Mrs. A. Merle Odegard, of Santa Ana; two sisters, Mrs. Amelia Prochnow, of South Dakota; and Mrs. Delia Prochnow, of Idaho, and three brothers, Perdinand, Julius and Herman, all of Wisconsin.
Heft came to Anaheim six years ago from his native state, Wisconsin.
mandments are based on these.
"It is a mistake for people to take God's principal commandments as beautiful theories when in reality they are direct commands.
"Every person was born with the same dignity. No individual, no nation, no race is superior in the eyes of God, and the world's greatest trouble today is its failure to follow the commandment to 'love thy neighbor' and practise fraternal charity."
