Modern Plant is Pride of Concern
Building Embodies Advanced Practices of Industrial Construction
The plant of Cal-Juices, Inc., embodies the most advanced practices of industrial construction for permanency and maximum economy in operation.
The main building is 100x160 feet, is two stories high with full basement, and is of reinforced concrete construction. Special attention was given to the problem of illumination and virtually the entire wall of the production department is devoted to windows. Scientific artificial illumination makes it practical to operate he plan 24 hours a day in the peak of the season.
Mastic floors throughout the building are acid proof, and the interior decoration and finish is designed for maximum cleanliness, and sanitation.
All machinery and equipment on the production line is of stainless steel. The "streamlined" pipe arrangement, with no elbows or abrupt turns, allows every inch of pipe to be steam-cleaned and scoured every 24 hours.
Fresh water from wells 400 feet in the ground is used throughout the plant in the condensors, evaporators and can cooler. This water is never used a second time.
All workers in the plant wear white uniforms, and, in short, nothing remains undone which will add to the efficiency and sanitation of all operations.

The entire basement of Cal-Juices is given over to complete, modern cold storage facilities. This fact makes it possible to deliver to the trade in March or April the same high quality of juice as first packed in the preceding August or September.
Cold storage is absolutely essential to the safe-keeping of canned juices and concentrates. No matter how good a product is when first packed, it will remain good only if kept at a temperature of 50 to 60 degrees; at that temperature it will stay good indefinitely. If subjected to heat of 80 degrees or more for a period of about two months, juice will change both in flavor and color without the visible warning of swelled cans.
To maintain the uniform quality of the products and to develop new products for manufacture necessitates a completely equipped laboratory as one of the most important parts of the plant.
The large, airy room, with one side entirely of reinforced glass presents a picture of spotless precision with walls and ceiling of white enamel; mastic-covered floor; sinks, drainboards and counters of stainless steel, and highly specialized research equipment.
In constant use to make control tests are the thermostatically controlled white enameled incubator; large electric refrigerator; Bausch and Lomb polariscope for testing fruit solids; Burettes and graduates and beakers and other laboratory ware made of pyrex; platform scales, balance scales, and glass-enclosed precision scales; mixing devices, a calculating machine, and great numbers of shelves filled with date control samples.
White-uniformed laboratory technicians, supervised by a chemist of long years of experience in making fruit juices and concentrates, make continual control tests of all products being made in the factory. They also create new products for Cal-Juices Inc.
Anaheim Cafe Sells Cal-Juices Products
One reason for the popularity of the Anaheim cafe, 250 E. Center street, is that it specializes in good foods at a reasonable price. As important, H. M. Williams, proprietor, believes, is the fact that Real Gold orange juice is served.
Williams came to Anaheim more than two years ago as manager of a grocery store. About a year ago he purchased the Anaheim cafe and has successfully operated it since. Williams lived in Los Angeles about a year after coming to California from Iowa where he had considerable experience in restaurant business.
July Among Worst Months for Wrecks
Because of the heavy increase in motor tourist travel, July is one of the peak accident months of the year, warns the public safety department of the Automobile Club of Southern California.
The usually clear weather is no safety panacea, for four out of five accidents occur when the weather is clear and the pavement is dry, according to previous July statistics.

The Garden Grove Mutual Orange Association was formed in July 1922. Charles A. Andres, a member of the present board of directors was first chairman of the board.
For the first year or two, the association rented quarters for a living house; but the rented holding proved inadequate to meet the needs of the growing association and the present excellent structure was built in 1923. The members anticipated still further growth; so built ample quarters, consequently no import-additions have been made in recent years although the capacity of the plant has been increased by installation of more efficient equipment.
W. B. Merchant was manager a number of years. When Merchant was transferred in 1932 the field department and made district representative of the actual Orange Distributors in Clare county. E. J. Smale, a grower who joined the association in its second year, was made manager.
John W. Crill, president of Cal-Juices, Inc., is also president of the board of directors of the Garden Grove association. Other officers and directors are Jess Long, vice-president; W. K. Suiter, secretary; Charles A. Andres, C. M. Roberts, J. H. Stewart and Archie W. Taylor.
BETTER YOSEMITE FISHING
Improved fishing conditions next year are assured in Yosemite National park, for 1,400,000 fingerling trout have been planted in the park's lakes and streams, reports the outing bureau of the Automobile club of Southern California. This is 50 per cent more than last year's plantings according to park officials.

Sol-Gas Used by Rural Residents
Sol-Gas, blended, tanked and distributed by Harry I. Horn at his plant on 101 highway just north of Anaheim, is only a little more than two years old, but it has gained wide fame in Orange county as a source of fuel for persons living outside of areas serviced by natural gas companies.
Horn previously was the county distributor for another gas company, but in February, 1937 entered the field independently. His concern now employs four persons and distributed the producetons and distributes the product the south-east portion of Los Angeles county.
The fuel used in Sol-Gas comes from the Richfield oil fields after which it is refined and then blended and stored in tanks. While in the tanks, Sol-Gas is a liquid, which becomes a gas when mixed with air.
Sol-Gas is capable of doing anything that natural gas can do. It is used in ranch homes for heating, cooking, water heating, refrigeration and other uses. Dairies are also extensive users of Sol-Gas as a means of sterilizing their equipment.
