50 Years Ago Dec. 22, 1887 The effects of the blizzard on Tuesday night are beginning to roll in thick and fast. B. E. Kraemer reports their windmill, together with the frame which supported it, torn from its fastenings and watted into a pepper tree some distance off. The large sign on the Anaheim hotel was torn loose and hurled into the street, but with the exception of one end of the sign being splintered, no other damage was sustained. The shed on J. B. McCullough's place was blown over, and the roof fell upon a very valuable colt which Mr. McCullough had tied therein. He first thought the colt had broken away, but in rumaging among the ruins he found the colt pinned to the earth by the roof. After it was released it was found not to be seriously injured. All nimrods are referred to the following facts in relation to the coming rabbit slaughter: Look out for the rabbit drive on the 24th. All shooters will please report to Captain Keith by the 17th ready for duty. Quails will not count, as we think it dangerous to shoot them on a drive. Record Yuletide Business Is Seen Santa is going to be swamped with Christmas packages during the holiday season, H. E. Carter, agent of the Railway Express agency, declared today. He bases his prediction on orders received from the management of his company to prepare for the biggest Christmas business in years. "We have reason to believe that the American people, always generous at holiday time, have more money to spend this year," said Carter, "and they are going to open their purse strings wider than ever before. Gift-giving is now a fixed habit and the children especially are going to be remembered with more liberality than ever." Express employees are joining in the usual plea to the public to "shop early and ship early," even though express service is geared to high-speed operation. In fact, to avoid disappointments holiday shipments by express will be delivered on Christmas Day, even those not arriving in town until Christmas morning. The local express office has received a supply of attractive holiday package stickers for free distribution to the public. The service is available at the convenience of the shipper, who can summon a pickup express vehicle by phoning the local Express Agency, or the Western Union for a messenger to call immediately for such packages. His stay on the California employers who hire from four to seven persons inclusive have only a few more days to register with the state Department of Employment before January 1, 1938, when they become subject to pay contributions to the Unemployment Trust fund. California law, according to Samuel Leask, Jr., unemployment reserves commission member from Santa Cruz, requires that every person who hired from four to seven persons including 20 days of 1937, each day being in a separate calendar week, pay contributions to the fund. Registration blanks have been distributed to some 50,000 employees, Leask said. However additional forms are obtainable in the office of the California State Employment service, 501 W. Fifth street, Santa Ana, and regional offices of the department in San Francisco and Los Angeles. To date, only 13,000 employers have registered, Leask said, and the department to avoid a flood of registrations at the first of the year urges immediate transmission of the forms to the Sacramento office.
