New Streamlined Trains Announced To meet the growing demands of the public for improved high speed streamlined passenger service between Chicago and Los Angeles, the Union Pacific and Santa Fe announced recently that on or about February 20, 1938, each of these roads will inaugurate a second 39 hour and 45 minute train between these two points. Under this new arrangement the Union Pacific will operate their City of Los Angeles every third day, both from Los Angeles and Chicago, while the Santa Fe will operate its Super Chiefs from Chicago on Tuesdays and Saturdays and from Los Angeles on Tuesdays and Fridays. Both of the Union Pacific streamliners will have cars for coach passengers, as well as Pullman passengers, while the Santa Fe Super Chiefs will be operated in two sections, one for sleeping car passengers and one for coach passengers. The streamlined trains of both the Union Pacific and Santa Fe will operate on a 39 hour and 45 minute schedule in each direction and both trains will represent the latest development in modern lightweight, high speed passenger service. "The saving of lives, creation of better working conditions, preservation of employees' earning power by prevention of accidents, and the knowledge that lowering workmen's compensation insurance costs by reducing the accident frequency in the industry is possible, motivate the board in its formation and activities," Travers said in announcing the appointment of Martinson to head the movement. Promptly at 7:30 o'clock Mayor A. C. Boice will press a button which will set the electrically-operated fountain into action, providing a continuous cycle of colorful water effects during which 126 different color combinations playing over changing water forms will be produced every 21 minutes. The fountain, regarded as one of the most elaborate luminous water displays in Southern California, was installed by the city council at a total cost of approximately $3200. It replaces the old fountain which had stood in the center of the plaza for the past 53 years. Treasure Island Is Given to City Uncle Sam's newest territory, Treasure Island in the middle of San Francisco bay—largest man-made island in the world—they was part and parcel of the city and county of San Francisco. The 400-acre island, dredged from the bottom of the famed harbor, is the site of the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition and future San Francisco Grand Central airport. The United States army engineers, who employed more dredgers to raise the island than were used in the building of the Panama canal, deeded the new land to San Francisco to be used temporarily for the $50,000,000 world's fair of the west. The island was built with a WPA appropriation of nearly $4,000,000. Ceremonies were held in the midst of an initial $10,000,000 construction program. An additional $10,000,000 worth of buildings and palaces are projected to take shape early next year.
