50 Years Ago Dec. 15, 1887 Steps should at once be taken to form an efficient fire company in our town. With a suitable fire apparatus at hand it would certainly seem that enough spirit would exist among our citizens to form an organization for the suppression of fires. People contemplating improvements will naturally enquire as to the facilities for coping with fire in any town, and it will not rebound to our credit to have it known that no effort has been made for a year to regulate and put in order the extensive fire apparatus which is possessed by our town. An old time Santa Ana, such as has not been experienced here in years, began last Saturday night, but abated on Sunday, and since then desultory "blows" have been the rule until Tuesday night, when another gale sprang up. Yesterday was disagreeable on account of the wind, but from accounts received from several sections of the country roundabout, we have not had such severe weather as has prevailed at other places. Riverside had a terrible gale which did much damage to the orange crop. The new hotel at Lordsburg was damaged to the extent of $8000. Considerable damage occurred at Santa Ana when twenty wind-mills were blown down. An important sale of Anaheim real property at public auction will take place in front of the county clerk's office in Los Angeles on next Saturday, the 17th inst., at 10 o'clock a.m. The sale is for the purpose of closing up the affairs of the Dreyfus estate, and as usual in such cases, the property will doubtless be sold at a great sacrifice. Among the property to be sold is the following: The brick block on the corner of Center and Los Angeles streets comprising the stores of Cahen, Rimpau, Pellegrin and the post office. This is the best paying property in Anaheim, has good tenants and is the business center west by the vineyard of Hermann Kroeger, and on the north by the ostrich farm. This is a splendid piece of property, in a neighborhood where land is rapidly vanicing. Some very fine acreage properties in Yorba district. A more particular description of the property is given in the legal notice of the sale published in our advertising columns. The terms of the sale are half cash, balance in one year at 8 per cent. This sale presents an opportunity to secure the cream of Anaheim property at bedrock price. Two thousand acres on Olinda ranch in the Shanktract, owned by W. H. Bailey, being sown to barley. Mills was appointed to take up the matter of redistricting the county along supervisor lines with the various board of trade and chambers of commerce in the county. Mr. Mills said that northern Orange county is not getting a square deal in the matter of payment of taxes and expenditure of tax money. He showed that while there had been an increase of $98,206 in county taxes the past year, the third supervisorial district has paid $48,167 of that money, or 49 per cent of the whole county. A committee of five consisting of J. W. Duckworth, Chas. Eygabroad, A. A. Mills, J. S. Howard and V. U. Simpson was appointed to investigate the matter and boost it along. The memborship committee proposed the names of S. C. Newnes of the sanitarium and the Fischer Wine company for membership and they were unanimously elected. A communication from the San Bernardino National Orange show inviting Anaheim to forward a consignment of citrus fruits for exhibition was read and Mr. Eygabroad was appointed chairman of a committee to take the matter up with the local citrus fruit associations. Officers of the board for the coming year were elected as follows: President, Chas. Eygabroad; vice-president, Bird V. Beebe; secretary, J. F. Ahlborn, treasurer, Arthur von Heydekampf; directors, H. It's especially welcome if, besides lightening work, it helps to turn out lighter, lighter and more delicious cakes, pies, and fried foods of every kind. Just such a modern cooking miracle has recently been introduced—a new, improved, "super-creamed" vegetable shortening which can be creamed in 30 seconds! All the hard work's been done already, by the manufacturers, and as an added result of this wonderful process, the cakes and pastries made with the "super-creamed" shortening are lighter and fluffier than ever. Potatoes and other foods fried in it moreover, are made miraculously digestible. Modern vegetable shortening succeeded where the earlier varieties failed. And now, to cap the climax, comes this new and improved "super-creamed" Crisco. It is getting a hearty welcome from American housewives.
