World's Biggest Precast Concrete Pipeline is Completed This Week Completion of pipe laying on the world's largest precast concrete pipe line was reported recently at the headquarters of the Metropolitan Water district. Constructed as a part of the distributing system of the Metropolitan aqueduct, the giant water line has an average diameter of 12 feet and its building has required the use of 465,000 barrels of cement. Located along the "upper feeder" of the aqueduct distributing system, the various sections of this pipe line have a total length of 36 miles and have been placed between the Cajalco reservoir near Riverside and the city of Pasadena. That part of the distribution system now under construction will have a total length of 150 miles and will carry 500 million gallons of water daily, or one half the capacity of the main aqueduct. Varying in diameter from 12 feet, the precast concrete sections that make up the line just completed are the largest that have ever been fabricated. Each of these sections is 12 feet long, and in the case of the larger diameter pipe, each section weighs 42 tons. Because of the tremendous size of this pipe, there were no existing pipe plants that could manufacture them, and it was necessary to build three large fabricating plants along the line of the construction operations. The cost of these plants alone represented an investment of nearly a million dollars. In addition to these plants, special trucks, trailers, and giant gantry cranes were also built to haul the pipe from the plants and install it in the trench. Placing of pipe was started on March 21, 1936, and since that date a total of 15,464 sections of the giant pipe have been manufactured and placed in the trench where they will carry Colorado river water to the 13 cities in the Metropolitan Water district. Public is Lauded For Fire Record Increased public caution with fire, the fire fighting activities of the CCC and Forest Service protective forces, favorable climatic conditions and new and more effective facilities for the detection and suppression of forest fires were the factors credited for this year's abnormally low fire record in the national forests of California according to a preliminary report. Death Summons Cypress Resident Mrs. Margaret Eleanor Cawthorn, a resident of Cypress for 38 years, passed away Saturday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Wilkins of Los Angeles, and funeral services were conducted from the First Methodist church of Downey Tuesday afternoon. B. Show of the United States forest service. Since January 1 a total of 1450 forest fires within national forests of California burned over 15,931 acres, in comparison with 1681 fires which burned 78,571 acres of timber and brush areas during the same period in 1936. Included with figures for the present year were fires on private lands within the boundaries of national forests which burned 3,121 acres and were fought by federal fire-fighting forces. Total cost for fire suppression chargeable to fire-fighting funds was $126,706 or about one-half the sum expended for fire control last year. Regional Forester Show, under whom function 18 national forests containing over 19,250,000 acres of land in California and Southwestern Nevada, commenced the many forest visitors who showed increased cooperation in Mrs. Interment was at Rose Hills cemetery. Mrs. Cawthorn was 65 years of age and the wife of J. C. Cawthorn, rancher living on Orange avenue. In addition to her husband and Mrs. Wilkins, she is survived by two other daughters and four sons. The daughters are Mrs. Roberta Para of Savanna station, and Mrs. Blanche Barber of Santa Monica. The sons are Robert C. Cawthorn of Cypress, Maxwell Cawthorn of Coachella valley, Carey Cawthorn of Imperial valley, and Roger L. Cawthorn of Santa Monica. keeping fire out of the timber and brush lands of the mountains. His report revealed that man-caused forest fires were 23 per cent less than the figure for the corresponding period in 1936. "The outstanding element in the reduction of fire damage in this region, and in other forest areas of the United States, is the increased respect which the public has for its forest playgrounds," Show stated. The earnings, living and spending habits of 100,000 "average" families living on farms, in villages, towns and cities throughout the United States were studied to determine the "typical American Family." The survey was made by the Department of Agriculture's bureau of home economics in 19 city communities, 140 villages and 66 farm counties. A husband, wife and two children were found to comprise the typical family. The husband was found to work in a factory or store for a weekly wage and the woman did her own housework. WORKERS SHARE UP The American worker's share of the national income has steadily increased from 38 per cent in 1850 to over 66 per cent today. CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard." These words of the Psalmist are the Golden Text in the Lesson-Sermon on "God the Only Cause and Creator" on Sunday in all branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist,, in Boston, Massachusetts. Among the Bible selections in the Lesson-Sermon are these verses from the Psalms: "Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Give Electrical Gifts this Christmas SNUG WARMTH FOR WINTER NIGHTS EVERYONE CAN USE AN ELECTRIC HEATING PAD—Special price arranged. Clifton explained. It has been known for years that this communicable disease could be jumped out of existence if it were possible to completely control the spread of infection, he said. Now, with the tuberculin test and the modern X-ray, we can detect early infections and cure them before they have had a chance to be spread to others," Clifton said. "The tuberculin skin test will reveal the slightest infection with the tubercle bacillus, while the modern X-ray and physical examination will show the presence of the disease in the body before any outward symptoms have developed. The examination of the school children of California, then, leads to the discovery and cure of cases which would not otherwise be discovered until outward symptoms appeared, and therefore is an aid in preventing the spread of this disease to other children. "Also, in the case of students showing infection, we attempt to uncover the source of that infection. We know that every case of tuberculosis comes from another and when we find a student infected with the disease we know that somewhere among the members of his family or in the circle of his acquaintance there must be someone with active disease spreading the germs. It is part of our problem to find this person and to stop this continued spreading of germs. "The expense of giving tuberculin tests and X-rays is defrayed by the funds realized from the sale of Christmas Seals." Liquor Bottles of Two Types Banned December 31 will see the elimination of two types of liquor bottles from the shelves of California liquor dealers, according to Ray Edgar, member of the state board of equalization. By action of the 1937 legislature, Edgar points out, two-ounce bottles of distilled spirits are outlawed in California except that they may be sold on trains and boats for consumption on the premises. The legislature also banned the bottling of wine in flask containers of less than one-half gallon capacity which are of a type similar to those used for bottling distilled spirits. V. F. W.
