O.D. Predicts Successful Year A navel orange crop of fine quality and a coming heavy pre-cession of valencias, also of good quality, were pointed to as cheer-signs for the California citrus grower to consider, at the annual meeting, yesterday, of the actual Orange Distributors. "Navels are beginning to move from Tulare county," it was stated. "So far, the color has not been good, but the cold nights will improve this. The present small-to-medium sizes may take added growth. Southern California navels also generally are of good quality, except for the trips damage in some districts and somewhat small sizes. Prospects are for a large crop of Valencias in Orange county, and well distributed among the groves. The winter crop of grapefruit in both California and Arizona is of exceedingly fine quality and the appearance of even the first carads was fine. There is great interest among the western trade in its grapefruit. The outlook for monos also is cheerful with prospects of a crop of good quality and not excessively large. Generally it is a healthy outlook after the shock of the freeze in last January. Trees are in better condition than in years." Welfare Load In County Increases Net Gain of 124 Over Month September Is Recorded During October The county welfare department case load reached 3528 as of October 31, Director Jack W. Snow reported to the board of supervisors Tuesday. This was a net gain of 124 over September. "Although there was a substantial number of denials of aid to those found to be ineligible, old age security continues to lead the increase," Snow said. "Liberalization of state laws at the last session of the legislature has resulted in the growth of assistance rolls about as anticipated when the liberalization programs were inaugurated." At the end of October there were 1941 names on the approved aged aid rolls, a net gain of 134 as the result of transfers from pending cases under investigation to the approved classification. Nine new blind applications were approved bringing the total receiving state aid for blind up to 76. A decrease of five cases brought the orphan aid case load down to 199. Direct county aid was extended to 600 cases including the regular indigent list during October as compared with 532 in September. Due largely to salary changes, administrative costs for October were $2.30 per case compared to $1.91 for the month before. This amounted to 8.4% of all funds expended during October as compared with 7.3% in September. Newspaper University (Continued from page 4) down in Tipuani Valley within 100 days. A Five Belle Picture Starring Chevrolet A first camera test recently on the Columbia Picture's lot, the new 1938 Chevrolet Master Deluxe recorded top billing in the minds of the five Columbia players shown above. While some of the cast approval and pleasure at the 1938 Chevrolet's advanced front-end styling, Wyn Cahoon, featured driver, tiptoed round to the driver's seat, tested Chevrolet's new "TIPTOE-MATIC" CLUTCH, one of the outstanding engineering achievements of 1938. It has won immediate public acclaim. Next Saturday Is Annual Dairy Day The annual Dairy day is set for Saturday, November 20. SCOTCH ACCENT— HOLLYWOOD, California — That Holywood influences manners and morals is a fairly prevalent theory. Recent evidence: the Shirley Temple colfure; Mee West's gusty wisecracks; Hollywood halo-hats, a break on the rising consumption of native U.S. whiskey. To relate this last named fact to the cinema involved a statistical triumph of sorts, but the researchers of the Distilled Spirits institute (formed after repeal and headed by erstwhile prohibition officer Dr James M. Doran) collated the findings of its sober field workers, arrived at the conclusion that screen bibbers were shown drinking Scotch almost exclusively, to the detriment of an impressionable public. To Hollywood's Hays office, the institute last month complained: "This institute is, of course, composed entirely of producers of America whiskey such as rye and bourbon, and they feel that an imported product which contributes little or nothing to the economic life of the U.S. seems to be unduly favored. It is not their contention that rye or bourbon should be specified, but that it might be possible to use merely the term 'whiskey and soda' which would, even in pictures with an English setting, be more correct since it is the form the British use." BUDDY'S OPERATION— NASHVILLE, Tennessee—Oneicy-cold night in January 1919, eight reckless Tennessee soldiers failed in a self-appointed, brained attempt to kidnap Kaiser Wilhelm from his Netherlands retreat. Censured by General John J. Pershing, they swore among themselves not to tell their story for 15 years. But three weeks ago the "Saturday Evening Post" featured their escapade as told by Truman Hudson Alexander, veteran Nashville "Tennessee" columnist who had diligently tried since 1934 to ferret out the story. Three of the original kidnappers, now Tennessee businessmen, broke their 18-year silence only to help him raise money for expensive operations to save. 12-year-old Truman Alexander Jr., an infantile paralysis victim. By Armistice Day last week the raid of 1919 had ended well for all concerned: Writer Alexander had received $1,500 from the "Saturday Evening Post"; 90-lb. Buddy Alexander, after two excruciating spinal operations and a blood transfusion from his father, was in a Mankattan hospital, encased in 125 pounds of plaster, grinning and beginning a recovery scheduled to take a year; and the ex-Kaiser was still safe in Holland. Warning on Carbon Monoxide is Issue Entirely apart from the fact that it prevents the giving of snails, therefore, makes for illiteracy, the practice of operation a motor vehicle with the window closed involves other menace aspects. There is the matter carbon monoxide gas collects within the interior of the vehicle states the public safety department of the National Automobile club. NIGHTLY EXCEPT SATURDAY, KSFO-KNN New Plan of Education Adopted By University of Southern California Introduction of a new plan of education for students of the college of letters, arts, and sciences at the University of Southern California has just been announced by President R. B. von KleinSmid. Following a year of intensive study by a faculty committee under the direction of Dr. Albert S. Raubenheimer, dean of the college, the innovation will become effective next September. With three objectives, the plan is designed to offer a broader understanding of civilization, personal development, and problems of modern society for first and second year students; to set up divisional as well as departmental specialization for upper-division students; and to institute a special Honors Curriculum for the encouragement of superior scholarly preparation given to high school students entering U.S.C. from all parts of the country, it was felt that a common cultural basis for all lower division students would be more effective," said Dr. Raubenheimer. Accordingly, the plan will devote the first two years to a study of man and the development of his civilization; human behavior, with emphasis upon the individual's own development, principles of learning, and social and governmental problems. Considered as preparatory courses, the broadening subjects will be required of students, with certain electives, prior to their entrance into specialized fields of medicine, law, etc. ARTHRITIS?
