Funeral Home's History is Long
Backs, Terry and Campbell Mortuary is Founded
67 Years Ago
Down through the years Backs, Terry and Campbell, undelttaking firm, and the Anaheim Gazette have marched almost side by side. The former was established only a few years after the debut of the latter, and both have continuously served the city and the district.
Ferdinand A. Backs, Sr., was the founder of the establishment. At that time the mortuary was located on the 100 block on North Los Angeles street. For many years Backs conducted the business alone, serving most of the families in Anaheim and the surrounding territory. In the firm's archives today are records of the death and burial of many of the pioneers and early settlers.
After many years of active direction of the business Backs turned over the management of the concern in 1909 to his son, F. A. Backs, Jr. The younger Backs is now an officer of the Savings Building and Loan association of Anaheim and active in the management of that establishment.
Some years after F. A. Backs, Jr., took over the business George W. Terry, since deceased, became affiliated with the company and the name of the firm was changed to Backs and Terry. Mrs. Terry was also affiliated with the concern for some years.
In 1922 Harry Campbell, presi-director joined the firm.

mortuary now ranks as one of the
most modern and complete in
Southern California. An ambulance
service is also operated by Backs, Terry and Campbell.
Staff members; in addition to
Campbell, are Mrs. Campbell, J.
Ben Kaulbars and J. Frank Cone.
All are licensed embalmers.
Elks Ladies Club
Is Ten Years Old
The tenth anniversary of the
founding of the Anaheim Elks

1927, during one of the monthly

the Elks lodge.
Those eligible for membership
are the wife, mother, daughter or
sister of an Elk in good standing.
Officers elected for the first
year of the Elks Ladies Card club

president; Mrs. R. L. Royalty, vice president; and Mrs. Robert Wilson, secretary and treasurer.

Legion Auxiliary Organized in 1921
The Anaheim unit of the American Legion Auxiliary was organized on March 31, 1921. Mrs. Harry A. Akerman was chosen president for the first year, with Mrs. William P. Webb, Jr., secretary.
When the unit in Anaheim was established the organization was known as the American Legion Women's Auxiliary. In February 22 the name was changed to American Legion Auxiliary.
The auxiliary is a national organization affiliated with the American Legion in that any woman whose father, brother, or husband saw service in the world war is eligible for membership in the association.
Membership has steadily increased, with the national association now ranking as the largest women's partiotic organization in the world. Affiliation with the association carries with it membership in the organization of International Veterans and Auxiliaries.
The Junior Auxiliary is composed of daughters of veterans of the world war until they reach the age of 18 when they automatically become senior members.
One of the principal activities of the organization is the help and assistance given the veteran and his family throughout the year. A major part of this assistance is derived from the sale of the Flanders red paper poppy, which are made by disabled veterans in the California hospitals.
Anaheim unit has among its members four Gold Star Mothers. They are Mrs. Anna Stoffel, Mrs. Carrie Johnson, Mrs. Bertha Schenck and Mrs. Alice Matlock.
Mrs. Ellis Gaddis is the present

Lanenberger First Store Owner Here
In the early days of Anaheim A. Langenberger conducted the only general merchandise store on the corner of Center and Lemon streets, now occupied by The S. Q. R. Store. He carried a well selected stock of groceries and hardware.
Tell the merchant that you saw his Ad in The Gazette.

Loma Vista Has Fine Mausoleum
Loma Vista Memorial Park and Mauoseum is situated north of Fullerton and overlooks the most scenic section of Orange county. It occupies a naturally drained hill top site and is far from the noise of cities and highway travel. Trees and flowers in abundance lighten sorrow bereavement.
The memorial park itself was chartered in 1914. The first unit of the new mausoleum was completed about a year and a half ago. The building was constructed to permit adding of units to three sides of the original structure.
The mausoleum is equipped with 312 crypts, each of which has a fresh air ventilating system. It is a structure of reinforced concrete and marble, the architectural beauty of which lies in its massive strength and simplicity of design. It is built to endure throughout the ages and stands on the most picturesque spot of the cemetery grounds.
Only pure Italian marble, perfectly matched throughout, was used in construction. The building is lighted with art glass ceiling and three beautiful windows at the ends of the corridors add to the beauty.
Both the cemetery and the mausoleum are heavily endowed to provide ample funds for the perpetual care and maintenance of the establishment. A certain amount from each purchase is placed in the endowment fund.

At one time Anaheim had a

Railway to Pomona

The late Sheldon Littlefield and

Marshal Davis was Expert Pistol Shot
In the late seventies Dy Davis
was town marshal. He was a man of few words, but a dead shot.
One day a Mexican rode into
town and was recognized as the attacker of a woman. Davis was summoned as the Mexican was headed east on Center street. The marshal called to him to halt. Instead the Mexican put spurs to his horse. Davis shot once with his revolver and the Mexican dropped from his horse at a spot where the Bank of America now stands.
In those days the people did not know what a coroner was and,
there being one bad man less, the incident was closed.
