S. Q. R. STORE IS RECOGNIZED AS PROGRESSIVE, MODERN BUSINESS Another of the pioneer institutions of Anaheim is The S. Q. R. Store. It had its beginning back in 1883 when Samuel Federman came to Anaheim and conducted a store in the Kroeger building in the center of the first block on West Center street and on the south side. In 1888 he erected his own building on the northeast corner of Center and Los Angeles streets. In 1907 he sold out to August E. Schumacher and Oscar H. Renner, the latter having been employed in this store since 1892. These two men have been identified with the business ever since. In the years that have passed it has become an institution in Anaheim. The new firm enjoyed immediate prosperity and has grown until now after 30 years the S. Q. R. store is one of the leading department stores in Orange county. In 1913 the S. Q. R. store removed to the new Dreyfus building on the southwest corner of Center and Los Angeles streets. There the proprietors opened with a new stock of goods, carrying substantially the same lines of goods that they still sell. In early days the young merchants found it necessary to speak German and Spanish in order to accommodate patrons from all sections of the county and they both became proficient in these languages. Anaheim was then, as now, the favorite trading town in Northern Orange county and customers came from Buena Park, Westminster, Garden Grove, Plainfield. Bothersome Negative "Murders" White Man; Leaves City In the early days a bus pugnacious negro drifted into town, and was forever getting into trouble. One of "the boys" around town ranged a duel between tween the negro and one his Vietims. Pistols were used at paces. And, of course, blast cartridges were used. At first volley the white fell. The boys rushed up poured red ink over his fists. The negro, believing he killed his man, upon solicitation of "the boys" left to and never returned. River Protected by Large Guard Crest Protecting the town's water force is one of the chapters Anaheim's history. At once when water in the Santa Ana river was scarce, Anaheim students had reason to believe forts might be made to water illegally. The result was that local zens guarded the division gate the river to see that no one perped with it. Old residents call that Frank Porter was tain of the crew. Sugar Factory was Unsuccessful Here In early days the young merchants found it necessary to speak German and Spanish in order to accommodate patrons from all sections of the county and they both became proficient in these languages. Anaheim was then, as now, the favorite trading town in Northern Orange county and customers came from Buena Park, Westminster, Garden Grove, Placentia, Yorba and other nearby settlements. When the S. Q. R. store was young goods were purchased twice a year. There were the "Spring and Summer" and "Fall and Winter" seasons. Large shipments came by freight twice a year from Chicago and St. Louis. Advertising and display of goods have undergone a tremendous change in the 30 years of the store's existence. Window trimming was not the fine art that it is today. The store has kept pace with Southern Pacific Is First Railroad The Southern Pacific extended its railway from Los Angeles to Anaheim in 1876, the terminus being at West Anaheim. In later years the railroad was continued into Santa Ana. Before the railroad was built to Santa Ana passengers were hauled from the station at West Anaheim to the Planters hotel by a two-horse stage. Mr. Gray was the driver of the stage and in case of a rush of business he had his two horses on the run. Passengers then were transferred to Santa Ana in a two-horse spring wagon driven by Cole Travis. They were delivered to the Lehman hotel, a frame building located at Fourth and Main streets, the only hotel in Santa Ana. Previous to the coming of the railway, passengers were hauled between Los Angeles and San Diego by way of Anaheim in four-hour stage coaches. Stops were made at the 17 Mile House, now known as La Mirada, Anaheim and San Juan Capistrano for the purpose of changing horses. Anaheim Spray Chemical company was the first organization in the United States to manufacture oil emulsions for citrus pest control, a product which has been found to be superior to any other in controlling diseases in citrus trees. The company was started on June 1, 1925 by A. W. Elmer and has grown rapidly since that date. The concern manufactures all its own products in its plant in Anaheim. The chief products of the Anaheim Spray Chemical company are the Blue Ribbon brands of oil emulsions. These products are sold directly by the manufacturing concern through its own sales organization. German Methodist Church Among Old Established Congregations One of the early churches of Anaheim is what was established as the German Methodist Episcopal church and is now known as the West Broadway Methodist church. It was founded in 1881 by the Rev. William Schuldt, with services of the church being held in the old Kroeger hall. The church had only been established one year when the congregation decided to construct its own building. Rev. Schuldt played an important part in the building program, and the new edifice was dedicated in 1883. The congregation was organized with 18 members. White, who gives prompt attention when anyone says "Hardware" White, hasn't been in business the longest of any individual in Anaheim, but his 18 years of serving the hardware needs of this city's residents ranks him as an old-timer. The H. N. White Hardware store is located at 142 E. Center street and has been in that location since December, 1919. A hardware store had been located in that building and in the building adjacent to it for some time before that. White came to Anaheim in 1919 from the state of Iowa and pursued a California conference, Methodist Episcopal church. Miller, who formerly owned a hardware business and who later became mayor of Anaheim. After a few years Miller left the company and his place was taken by Willard C Kilpatrick. Kilpatrick is still White's employ. The owner of the present business has been a hardware man for more than 40 years. For many years he was a traveling man, selling hardware. ALWAYS OBLIGED The late Nick Bittner was conductor and motorman on the street car that operated on Center street between the railroad depots. Nick was very accommodating when he saw a man run toward the car waving his hands, he would stop the car and wait for the man to climb aboard. THEN and NOW! At the time when the buildings shown in photo at left were constructed it took just about twice as much effort to complete that type of construction as it does to construct the beautiful and modern buildings of today. The reason being that during those days finished lumber was all done by hand and many convenient and helpful materials were not even thought of. Today there is but a short time between the cutting of a tree and the painting of the finished structure. painting of the finished structure.
