The name of the club honors the memory of Dr. Adrian Ebell who conceived a plan to broaden the education of women and to develop a higher culture. He created the "International Academy" in Berlin with the purpose of organizing chapters all over the world. In 1876 he established a society in Oakland, California. Shortly thereafter he died and it was then the Oakland women severed their connection with Berlin and renamed their society after its founder. The first southern California Ebell club was founded in Los Angeles in 1894, followed one month later by the forming of the Ebell Society of the Santa Ana Valley, the first in Orange county. Three classes, or sections, were formed by the Anaheim club in its first year. They were civics, German and travelers. Constitution Adopted The constitution, together with its by-laws, was adopted at the fourth meeting on January 18, 1908. Dues were established at one dollar a year and the initiation fee was fixed at one dollar. The organization met twice a month until September 5, 1908, when it was decided to hold only monthly meetings. Two months On October 23, 1902, a small party of German Baptists met in the home of S. Hemmerling on Lincoln road with the result that a new church, named "Bethel German Baptist church," was founded. The Rev. John Berg served as chairman of the meeting that evening and M. Hemmerling acted as secretary. Sixteen persons became affiliated with the church when it was founded. They were Rev. and Mrs. John Berg, M. Hemmerling, Mr. and Mrs. S. Hemmerling, Mr. and Mrs. G. Spingath, Mrs. E. Schacht, G. Schneider, Mrs. Wedel, Mr. and Mrs. E. Bressel, Mr. and Mrs. P. Berg and Mr. and Mrs. J. Wedel. The new church organization elected Rev. John Berg pastor, and he served until 1908. The first church building, valued at $2,000, was erected in 1903 on the corner of South Lemon street and West Broadway. It was dedicated April 12 of that year. Later this church was rebuilt to meet the needs of a growing membership. The following pastors served the church after Rev. Berg: The Rev. E. Wiesle from 1909 to 1910; the Rev. A. Rohde from 1911 to 1915; the Rev. M. Leuschner from 1916 to 1925; and the present pastor, Rev. O. R. Schroeder, from 1925 to the present time. Under the leadership of Rev. Schroeder the present church building was erected on the same site as the old church. It is a beautiful structure and is considered one of the finest in the German Baptist denomination. The new building was dedicated February 27, 1927. It was valued at $40,000. On September 21, 1930, a new pipe organ was placed in service. The present membership of the Bethel Baptist church is 259 persons. Of the charter members nine are still alive of which four are members of the Bethel church at the present time. They are Mr. More Than All the Gold Mines In the World" and Mrs. G. Dues were established at one dollar a year and the initiation fee was fixed at one dollar. The organization met twice a month until September 5, 1908, when it was decided to hold only monthly meetings. Two months later the society voted to join the state federation of women's clubs. Fifty women joined the club in its first year and the treasurer's report for that period showed $57.20 in receipts, $20.80 in disbursements, leaving a balance of $36.40. Anaheim Ebell club has held its meetings in the hbme of various members, in the Masonic Temple, the Odd Fellows hall, the Elks clubhouse, the Angelina hotel, the K. P. hall and the Presbyterian church. The organization has since its inception, taken an active part in the development of Anaheim. In 1910 it held a "tag day" to raise money to purchase three outdoor lamps for the public library. During the years when the club met on Saturday it annually held a reception for the teachers of the city. Christmas parties for children are annual events. Many other activities were engaged in, too numerous to mention. Building Clubhouse The club is now building a beautiful new clubhouse at the corner of Helena and Cypress streets. Architect for the structure is Stanley Falkenstein, a son of a charter member, Mrs. William Falkenstein. Among the programs and speakers the club likes to remember are Lillian Burkhart Goldsmith, Frederick Warde in "Sixty Years More Than All the Golden Mines In the World" MEN, since the dawn of history, have endured privations, hardships and suffering in the feverish search for gold. Is Old Business The Gibbs Lumber company is one of the oldest in the city and is the outgrowth of two separate companies which supplied building materials to Anaheim residents before the turn of the century. The company now operates yards in Anaheim, Fullerton and Placentia. Frank N. Gibbs, president of the company, came to Anaheim in 1911 and in September, 1935 consolidated with the Adams Lumber company. The Adams Lumber company had previously been the Adams-Bowers company, Henry M. Adams purchasing the business in 1932. The Adams-Bowers company came into being in 1920 when Adams and A. C. Bowers purchased the Griffith Lumber company. Adams came to Anaheim in 1903 from Santa Ana to take charge of the J. M. Griffith Lumber Company yard here. That company was reorganized a few years later and become the Griffith Lumber Company. Gibbs Lumber company specializes in quality building materials and attempts to maintain an up-to-date establishment. One of the principal policies of the company is to take an active interest in the three communities in which yards are located. Frank N. Gibbs is the president of the company, with H. M. Adams vice-president and Mrs. F. N. Gibbs, secretary. Both Gibbs and Adams have had more than 35 years experience in the lumber business.
