Anaheim, Calif., Oct. 28, 1937 68th Anniversary ALL - ELECTRIC KITCHEN SHOWN The beauty, convenient arrangement and modern equipment of this attractive all-electric kitchen which have come to the home during the past fifty years through use of electrical service. An electric ran frigrator and electric water heater contribute to the efficiency of this charming work-shop. ELECTRICITY IMPORTANT FACTOR IN MODERNIZING OF DWELLINGS The contrast between home comfort today and that in homes of 50 years ago is due in great measure to wider use of electrical service, in the opinion of R. E. Bacon, division manager for the Southern California Edison company. "In what is frequently termed the 'good old days,' homes were inconvenient and required a great deal of work to maintain everyday routine," Bacon said. "It is no wonder that the idea arose that woman's place was in the home—it caused her so much work she did not have time to leave it! "Especially was this true of the old-fashioned kitchen. On one side of the room stood the black and nickel stove, every inch of its surface exuding heat. The coal bucket, the wood-box and the ugly stove pipe were definite detractions from any neatness the kitchen might present. The source of water was a hand pump, with a water pail and dipper close by. Against another wall stood a kitchen cabinet, and in the center of the room was the kitchen table upon which Mother prepared food, the family ate their meals and around which on cold winter nights the family gathered in the light of a coal oil lamp. "A spring house or a cool spot on the back porch was the store place for perishable foods. The only means of heating water was on the stove. On wash day, a heavy boiler was hoisted onto the stove, and Mother boiled the electric washing machine, iron and the latest development, the electric ironing machine. A week's laundry today is finished in several hours. Fifty years ago it took an entire day. "Food preservation was the next field entered by electricity, and attending the electric refrigerator are convenience and economy beyond the imagination of our grandmothers. Then, to complete the all-electric kitchen, the electric water heater was introduced to provide a constant supply of hot water for every household need. "Radio has brought multiple pleasures to home life. Another convenience has been introduced by the electric clock, which is dependable source of correct time. And one-of-electricity's latest uses in home comfort is in heating a house both adequately and economically. "Fifty years ago, electrical generation was just beginning in southern California. Today, electrical service is an essential element in our every-day lives. The uses of electricity have grown so greatly that electrical service now meets every home operation requirement, as exemplified by the all-electric home, where electricity is used exclusively for cooking, refrigeration, water heating, room heating and various other services. There are thousands of all-electric homes in this part of the state, and their proven convenience and economy are making this type of home highly favored among modern homebuilders." Use of "black light" or fluorescent illumination at night on the largest outdoor scale ever attempted will be a feature of San Francisco's 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition. "A spring house or a cool spot on the back porch was the store place, for perishable foods. The only means of heating water was on the stove. On wash day, a heavy boiler was hoisted onto the stove, and Mother boiled the clothes before carrying them to the wash house and rubbing them clean on the wash board. "Times have truly changed. The progress which has been made in the past 50 years in the supply and availability of electrical service has made it possible for every home to share in the advantages of its use. Electricity's first contribution came in the form of lighting, bringing to the home for the first time a convenient means of adequate illumination. Then came the telephone, bridging distances and widening contacts in social and business life. As the years passed, electricity's force was applied to cooking, and the first electric range appeared. Throughout the years, steady improvements have been made in the design of electric ranges until today's 1937 models represent electricity's greatest contribution to happier kitchens. "It was not long before electric cooking was extended to other appliances as well. Toasters, percolators and waffle irons heralded a new era in easy cooking, which today is fulfilled by electric grills, roasters, casseroles, coffee makers, and the host of other small electrical devices in everyday use." "Laundry tacks, too, have been simplified by electricity. A site on Fairhaven avenue slightly more than three miles northeast of Santa Ana was chosen by the incorporators who were men who for many years had been active in building Orange county. In 1916 the first unit of Fairhaven mausoleum was built, a structure of granite, concrete and marble, whose architectural beauty lies in its massive strength and simplicity of design. Fairhaven cemetery and mausoleum offer every safeguard to purchasers, not merely promises which may or not may not be fulfilled, but actual performance backed up by an association which has been in successful operation for more than 25 years and numbering among its members men of strict integrity and financial responsibility. The endowment fund of association is now $300,000 and so securely invested that the principal can never be impaired. Art Display Shown at Padua Theater A continuous exhibit of contemporary art of the southwestern and Mexican field is being maintained in the lobby and dining room at the Padua Hills theatre. The present showing is the works of Carl Redin, nationally known for his oils of New Mexico where he lived for many years. Redin is reported to display remarkable versatility of technique, seemingly being as much at home in a wooded autumn scene with its brilliance of color and sharp detail as in his portrayal of desert mountains and softly shaded canyons. His "Apache Trail" with its feeling of depth and dreamlike reality is attracting most favorable comment. The public is invited to see these paintings at the Padua Hills theatre, where they will be on exhibit through the month of October. Maintain a fleet of trucks SERVE YOU Up and Deliver — ANYWHERE! ANAHEIM Forever Endowed Against Neglect A most vital factor of any burial property is the Endowment Fund; and it is the one important feature least investigated by the prospective purchaser. The mere statement that a "perpetual care fund" exists or will be created in the future is no guarantee that it is or will be adequate for the proper care and beautification of the property in the years to come. Fairhaven's Endowment Fund—amounting to over $250,000—is not a future anticipation but exists now in reality and is so securely invested for the lot and Crypt owners in Fairhaven that Perpetual Care is a positive assurance... Adjoining the rounda are the columbaria, where hundreds of bronze niches of varying sizes are provided for cinerary urns. Here, in imperishable bronze, ashes may be held forever in loving remembrance. The niches have plate glass or bronze fronts, which permits the name to be placed either on the urn or on the bronze. The chapel with its high vaulted ceilings, harmonious decorations—a myriad of colors filtering through the cathedral windows—forms a quiet sanctuary, sublime and beautiful. These rooms are done in varying colors of marble and present the highest achievement in memorial room construction.
