County Buildings Are Not Insured
Orange county's courthouse and hall of records—assessed at $142,155 and containing irreplaceable records, valuable papers and office equipment—have not accounted for fire insurance.
"Economy" prompted the dropping a year and a half ago of fire insurance policies on the two buildings. Other structures owned by the county—the courthouse annex and buildings at the hospital are insured.
Offices contained in the two uninsured buildings which possess valuable papers and securities, wooden furniture and inflammable linoleum, include recorder, treasurer, auditor, clerk, assessor, district attorney, justice court and tax collector.
Chairman Willard Smith was not aware that insurance had been completely dropped, and said it was his opinion that some insurance should be carried.
"The buildings are constructed so they wouldn't be completely destroyed, of course," said Smith, "but I feel that we should carry some insurance to protect us against damage."
Although the buildings are brick and stone, many office floors are covered with linoleum. Wooden furniture is in the majority, and even some filing cabinets are wood, containing books of important records. Wooden strips are found on most office walls; and door and window sashes are wooden.

Sales Tax Ruling Will Be Enforced
Strict enforcement of Ruling 73 which would require California mailers to indicate to customers the amount of sales tax reimbursement collected on each transaction, in effect, result in the passing of the tax to the consumer, was amended this week by members of a state board of equalization at meeting with representatives of various retail groups.
Under Ruling 73, retailers are even the alternative of either stating a notice indicating that the per cent sales tax will be added all posted or advertised prices goods subject to the tax, or the count of sales tax reimbursement may be stated separately on Worker Can Sue Union For Loss
An industrial employee has legal redress if he is damaged through the action of a labor union in calling an unauthorized strike or if the union is guilty of negligence or misconduct or commits some other wrong in the calling of a strike. Justice Evans sitting in the special term of city court in New York has ruled.
The ruling was made in the suit of Marion Candido against officers of the Collectionary and Tobacco Jobbers Employees union, Local 361. In his suit, Candido complained that he was "perfectly satisfied with his job," but as a union member, was forced to join a strike and to picket his employer.
Justice Evans dismissed the suit because of failure of the complainant to properly establish his loss, but in his opinion pointed out that "it is not to be assumed that a member of a labor union is without remedy if damaged thereby when the officers of a local call an unauthoried strike."
