The FARMERS CORNER
by RALPH H. TAYLOR
Executive Secretary Agricultural Council of California
One of the current best-sellers, which has particular appeal to families who live in single blessedness, carries the intriguing title Live Alone and Like It!"
Making the jump from personal and social problems to business and industrial problems, some interprising student of economics right render a worthwhile public service by turning out a new volume, entitled: "Live Together and Like It!"
For the recent economic disaster, it taught no other lesson, clearly demonstrated that the fortunes of business and agriculture, city worker and farmer, urban industrialist and rural merchant are inseparable. Live together they must! Whether they like it—and live in comparative harmony, seeking to be helpful one to the other along the way—will be the measure of their vision and intelligence!
In some recent developments, here is a healthy sign of a new cooperative spirit—of a new realization that agriculture's welfare or example, is vitally important to industry's welfare. The recent brief announcement of the successful sign-up of the prune pro-rate campaign, for example, made no mention of the fact that several large business groups—including banks, utilities and oil companies—underwrote the campaign. But without such financial assistance is doubtful that the goal would be achieved in time to be pruned for several weeks. Every waterfront strike deals a heavy blow to prune growers since food substitutions are made and consumption is lost.
On several other occasions recently, growers' groups have asked the state chamber of commerce to bring representatives of business groups together in order that farmers might explain their financing needs. In each case, the business men advanced funds on the understanding that if the campaigns were unsuccessful the money be an outright gift, but that if the sign-ups were a success all funds would be returned. In every instance to date, full repayment has been made or will be made following organization—an eloquent testimonial to be good faith of the farmers.
Business, when it steps forward to aid in farming financing, is not merely playing The Good Samarian. It is evidencing, rather, that it appreciates both the farmer's trade and his productively. A healthy agriculture is the best possible guarantee of healthy business and healthy urban industries—and many of the more forward-looking business men and farmers apparently are determined to "Live Together and Like It!".
The same spirit of cooperation also is becoming more evident in governmental problems. Typical of this trend is the fact that the
operative spirit—of a new realization that agriculture's welfare, or example, is vitally important to industry's welfare. The recent brief announcement of the successful sign-up of the prune pro-rate campaign, for example, made no mention of the fact that several large business groups—including banks, utilities and oil companies—underwrote the campaign. But without such financial assistance it is doubtful that the goal would have been reached in time to be of service to growers in disposing of the large 1937 crop.
And irrespective of conflicting opinions regarding the advisability of a pro-rate program on non-ferishables, the fact remains that business and industry gave timely and important financial assistance to growers who had determined that crop control had become a necessity. The problem confronting the prune growers had been magnified, incidentally, by the waterfront strike last winter, which blocked the export of Polo Tourney Goes Into Second Round
The second round of the Governor's Cup polo tournament, which is being held for the first time in the southland, will be played Sunday afternoon at Riviera with a six chukker contest between Riviera and Willie Tevis' San Francisco squad.
The finals a week from Sunday will be the occasion of a big equestrian celebration, with Governor Merriam making the presentation of the trophy.
In the first men's match Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock Spencer Tracy, Walt Disney and other notable screenland will play. Equestrian jumping events are carded between polo games.

A healthy agriculture is the best possible guarantee of healthy business and healthy urban industries—and many of the more forward-looking business men and farmers apparently are determined to "Live Together and Like It."
The same spirit of cooperation also is becoming more evident in governmental problems. Typical of this trend is the fact that the one-house legislature proposal, which would disfranchise rural California, insofar as state legislation is concerned, promises to meet stiff opposition in California's great cities, as well as in the country districts.
Nearly every responsible civic group in the three big cities plans to get into the fight to prevent enactment of the unfair and inequitable one house scheme.
Such developments auger well for a new deal in urban rural relationships. And that, in turn, means a state pulling in harness for the common good and common objectives. It is a reassuring tendency.

Root Fungus Control Outlined
Fungus is a root disease which often serious problem before known, according to Harold E. Wahlberg. The symptoms do not show up in the top of the tree until the disease has a considerable start on the roots.
The disease may be identified by a white threadlike mycelium growth underneath the bark of the root, also a purplish thread-like growth on the outside of the bark. Toadstools may indicate the presence of this disease. If these symptoms are observed, then special precautions should be taken so that the disease will not spread throughout the orchard.
The method of control consists of isolating the disease by trenching, following by fumigation of the soil with carbon bisulfide. To isolate the tree, trenches should be dug between the rows in order that the roots may be inspected. If the roots crossing the first trench that is dug show the disease the trench should be moved out another row and inspection carried on in this manner.
Trench as deep as the root system goes should surround the area of the disease is isolated. After the disease is isolated, it is then necessary to control the disease in the area by fumigation. Trees that have gone out of production should be removed following this fumigation.

The trench should be moved either row and inspection in this manner. A deep as the root system should surround the area so ease is isolated. After the is isolated, it is then nee-control the disease in the fumigation. Trees that out of production should moved following this fumigation. The method used in fumigating is to bore holes in the soil approximately 18 inches deep and 24 inches apart in every direction. In these holes two ounces of carbon bisulfide should be placed, the holes then immediately covered and following the fumigation of the entire trees space the soil should be moistened in order that the gas cannot escape.
Any grower who wishes further information on identifying and controlling this disease may receive said information by getting in contact with the farm advisor's office.
