50 Years Ago August, 1887 A good crop of oranges is expected this year several owners of groves that we have spoken with assure us that trees are looking well and are heavily laden with the golden fruit. Mr. R. H. Gilman, supt. of the S. C. Semi-Tropic Fruit company, is well pleased with the prospect for a good crop this year. The trees are bearing heavier than last year, with the exception of the navel variety. The fruit gives promise of being large and clean. We infer, however, that the prospective crop varies with locality, from the fact that Mr. L. W. Kirby does not expect as large a crop as last year. Mr. John Weglein, of the firm of B. Dreyfus & Co., arrived from San Francisco last week and will remain here until the close of the vintage. We learn from Mr. Weglein that the crop of grapes in the northern counties will be quite large and that a close estimate of wine yield of this season from the vineyards as far south as Fresno places the amount of vintage at eighteen million gallons. An inspection of some of the twigs of the diseased mission vines shows that a worm has eaten the pith in the twigs. Whether the presence of the worm has any connection with the disease afflicting the vine is a question that has been referred to Mr. Morse, the viticulultural expert for answer. The discovery of the worm was made on the vineyard of Mr. John Taylor. steadily. Keep well up to a new dwelling house every day. The Anaheim National Bank on Monday received their new bank notes amounting to $25,000, direct from the controller of currency at Washington. They are of ten and twenty dollar denomination and bear upon their faces the portraits of William McKinley and Hugh McCulloch. They have been signed and are now ready to take their part as the circulating medium of the realm. The bank authorities expect in the not distant future to receive another consignment of $25,000 worth of notes. Napoleon Hart this week sold his saloon to Len and Joseph Hessel, two sturdy representatives of the Union Brewing company, who will assume charge on the first. One feature of the British government commands respect of the world, and that is the manner in which it upholds the rights of its citizens abroad. The old Roman spirit of "Civis Romanus sum" still holds among Britishers abroad, and the Union Jack is a safe protection for the meandering Briton in whatever country he may be. Our people would like to see a little more of this spirit shown by Uncle Sam. 25 Years Ago County Clerk Guy Williams is engaged in mailing sample ballots to voters. Some of the Southern California cities have been making estimates of their population by multiplying the total registration by three, which would give Santa Ana about 13,500. However, this method of estimating puts the figure too high. Santa Ana has increased rapidly in population since the census of 1910, which gave Santa Ana 8,500, but it is not asserted for the city that the population is now over 11,000. THE EXPLORERS History's first reference to California occurs in a Spanish book of romance, "Las Sergas Esplandían," published in 1510. The author, Montalvo, there told of the "island of California," where a great abundance of gold and precious stone is found. From that hour the quest for California and its "great abundance of gold and precious stone" began. Sir Francis Drake, sailing under the English flag 37 years after Cabrillo, landed, on June 17, 1837, at what is now Drake's Bay, near the headlands of Point Reyes. Although Drake claimed the land for England, Spanish sovereignty of the new California was never seriously threatened. On this visit Drake nailed to a "faire great oaken poste" a brass plaque, suitably inscribed as a memorial that he had taken possession "of this kingdome" in the name of Queen Elizabeth.
