Orange, Lemon Juices are Rich In Diet Values Continuing a century-old popular belief in the virtue of hot lemonade as a remedy for common colds, investigators for the California Fruit Growers exchange and other medical authorities have discovered chemical properties in orange and lemon juice which supply a diety need and which assist in the maintenance of the body's defences against the attacks of infectious disease. This vital information was given new emphasis today in connection with the "Hot Water For Health" campaign now being launched by Southern California merchant plumbers and gas companies. Commenting on the subject, Rosamond H. Church, home economist for the Southern Counties Gas company, stated: Former Resident is Summoned by Death Mrs. Mary C. Bullard, 78, former resident of Anaheim, died at her home in Santa Monica Monday. Funeral services were conducted from Backs, Terry and Campbell chapel yesterday afternoon with the Rev. R. Kells Swenerton officiating. Entombment was in the mausoleum at Anaheim cemetery. Mrs. Bullard lived here 14 years before moving to Santa Monica in 1923. She is survived by one son. Shipping of Cars to Europe Costs Less than Rental Motorists going abroad frequently ask whether it is less expensive to rent an automobile overseas or to ship one's own for foreign travel, reports the car forwarding bureau of the Automobile Club of Southern California. The answer, according to club studies, is that it is slightly less expensive to rent a low priced car for one month of touring in England, but if you plan to use a more expensive type of machine, or if the tour is for two months or longer it is considerable cheaper to ship. For touring on the continent, your own car is generally less expensive. In Germany, however, a late model economical type car can be rented for one month at less than the cost of shipping your car across. Briefly the more extended the trip the more is saved by using your own car. Car operating costs in Europe average 3½ to 4 cents a mile. Including transportation, licenses, insurance, ferry service, and the like, the cost is about 9½ cents a mile. Since there are, on the average, from three to four persons using each car shipped abroad, this brings the total car cost per person to less than 3 cents a mile, which is less than either the first or second class rail fare in European countries. Out of Texas Comes Byron Nelson, Newest Flash on the Golf Horizon Meleoric Rise Is Threat to Big Pro Titles BY PHILIP MARTIN METEORICALLY, a new figure has flashed across the golf horizon. A rough-riding, hell-for-leather Texan named Byron Nelson, by virtue of his sensational victory, in the annual Augusta, Ga., Masters tournament, has "histed" himself by his bootstraps into the top flight of the professional golfers' ranks. But victory alone didn't qualify the Lone Star golfer for fame; rather the manner in which he achieved his triumph marked him as a great linksman. Trailing Ralph Guldahl by four strokes on the last nine in the 72-hole tournament, Nelson came on like a house afire to pick up six strokes on two holes and turn in one of the greatest competitive cards in the game's annals—a performance the golfing world will have occasion to remember for a long time. On the short 12th and the long 13th of Bobby Jones' layout, the slim fellow scored a birdie two and an eagle three to blast the heart out of Guldahl and card 283 for a two-stroke victory. Nelson's victory was no flash in the pan. Last year he served ample notice on the old guard that he was going to cause plenty of trouble when he won the Metropolitan Open at Mamaroneck, N.Y. There again a 283 score was good enough to best such tournament golfers as Craig Wood, Paul Runyan, and Byron Nelson...his victory was no flash in the pan. PICARD himself gave experts an inkling of what was to come after that tournament. Scores One of Greatest Cards Ever Made The word for it. He is downright reckless, but he has the skill to get away with it. "I believe in going for everything within reason, but I weigh the odds in each case, take the lay of the ground into consideration, and act accordingly. If the pin is cut right on the edge of a deep bunker, I will play for the middle half of the green; if the flag is open I'll take a whack at it." “This wild buckaroo from Texas, however, goes all out for the flag, no matter how many hazards are around it. With Byron, it's either a 3 or a 6, surely admire the kid's nerve.” This season, Nelson, a much improved golfer, is getting his 6's with marked irregularity and pros are finding him a very tough customer to beat. The 25-year-old former Worth railroad clerk has taken the place of Picard and Paul Runyan, who have come on as a fast pace the last couple of years to lead the money-winning pros and establish themselves as topnotchers. Nelson, if he continues to improve, will be a big problem in the National Open and P G A this year. He has the ideal temperament; he is cool, willing to gamble, and long off the tee. Runyan likens him to Sarazen—and anyone who can come close to being half as good as the stocky Italian was in his prime, or even as he was two years ago when he scored his famous double-eagle at Augusta. Industry Scores Employment Gain Since Depression The success which has attended the efforts of American industry to reduce unemployment is revealed by the latest report of the department of labor showing that factory employment in February was the highest since December 1929. Despite the current epidemic of strikes, manufacturing and non-manufacturing industries added 215,000 employees to their payrolls between January 15 and February 15, the report shows. This is more than enough to offset the seasonal decline after the year-end holidays, it was pointed out. Employment rose 1,550,000 between 1936 and 1937, the report showed. Among the industries showing the greatest gain in employment were iron and steel, agricultural implants, machine tools, radios and phonographs, typewriters, aircraft, automobiles, knit goods, men and women's clothing, aper and ink, paints and varnishes. The speakers were Lloyd Mitchell, manager, and Miss Barbara Parmalee and Miss Janet Scott, actresses. Mitchell told of the history behind the pageant, declaring that Helen Hunt Jackson, author of "Ramona", the story upon which the play is based, lived in San Jacinto for some time. Her studies there led to the writing of the play, which was dramatized by Garnet Holme. The play was inaugurated in 1923, he said. Attendance each year has been good and interest high. Opening day for this year is Saturday. The actresses each told something of their parts and of the story in general. Musical selections at the meeting were furnished by Leon Wray with Miss Katherine Steward at the piano. L. H. Loudon was program chairman. Almost all snow flakes are six-sided. Contract Awarded for Covering Tentis Mellus Brothers of Los Angeles will cover the temporary tenth-houses to be used at Fremont school next year, it was announced yesterday by the board of trustees. The company, the board believes, handles a superior product than does other companies whose bids were the same. The job will cost about $650. Of the eight tents, four will be completely recovered, the others only partially, it was said. It was also announced that all bids for the demolition of the present building had been rejected on advice from the district attorney. Errors in the bid by Cleveland Wrecking company was given as the reason for the action. "I'm in a car a good part of the time . . .
