Farm Survey In County Started In order to arrive at a soil depleting base and soil conserving base for the county and for each farm in the county, the Agricultural Adjustment Administration has authorized a farm acreage and crop survey to be made, according to W. M. Cory, assistant farm advisor. The work is now well underway. Upon its completion a soil depleting base and soil conserving base can be established for each farm. The soil depleting base is defined as the total number of acres established for the farm as the acreage normally used for the production of soil depleting crops. Soil depleting crops are such crops as corn, potatoes, sugar beets, annual truck, canning and vegetable crops, melons, sorghums, small grains, field beans, root crops, annual cut flowers, peanuts, and volunteer grains. Information gained from this survey will be utilized in carrying on the 1937 agricultural conservation program. The provisions of which, practices and rates of payment, will be announced in the near future. Land owners and operators are requested to cooperate to the fullest extent so as to expedite the work. It is necessary to determine the soil depleting and soil conserving base for the farm before the amount that can be earned under the program can be established. Those who are in the field making the survey in most fastest areas are residents of the county. Preliminary Estimates of Frost Damages to Citrus Is Unchanged Discussing citrus marketing problems before the annual citrus institute at San Bernardino Tuesday, Paul S. Armstrong, general manager of the California Fruit Growers exchange, reported little change in earlier estimates of fruit loss in the January freeze. The government estimate checks closely with the preliminary survey made by the exchange, he said. “There is a limited area in the world where citrus can be successfully grown and such areas are constantly exposed to frost,” said Armstrong, recalling that in 1933 Florida had a serious freeze. He pointed out that the year’s marketing situation had been vastly changed by the freeze. “We must salvage all fruit possible under the standardization law and at the same time remember that this law was recommended by the industry which should uphold effective enforcement of it,” Armstrong stated. We cannot compete with Florida on a price basis, so must compete in quality, he said, in stressing the importance of delivering fruit that gives consumer satisfaction. By-products can salvage considerable value from damaged fruit, he said. Navels are useable at present only for peel products—oil and pectin. It remains Alleged Murderer is Held to Answer Land owners and operators are requested to cooperate to the fullest extent so as to expedite the work. It is necessary to determine the soil depleting and soil conserving base for the farm before the amount that can be earned under the program can be established. Those who are in the field making the survey in most instances are residents of the community in which they are working. Travelogue Offered at Meeting of Club "The Wonderland Cruise," a travelogue by Miss Frida Jones featured the program of the Buena Park Woman's club this afternoon at the club house. Hostesses for the covered dish dinner which preceded the meeting were Mrs. Bert Wells, Mrs. E. S. Gienger, Mrs. C. C. Chapman, and Mrs. S. W. Craig. The March program will include a recital by students of the Margaret Buttree studio of music in Anaheim. Plans for Easter Service are Made Arrangements for the annual Easter service under the direction of the Placentia chamber of commerce will be made by E. A. Eisenacher and John B. Crossley. The co-chairman of the arrangement committee will appoint their own assistants. The services are held each year on Tuffree hill. Dixon W. Tubbs, agricultural commissioner for Orange county will be the speaker at the meeting of the Placentia farm center Monday. Fresh Fish Easier to Obtain, Report Joe Arno, manager of the Avalon Fish Market on East Center street, reports that the problem of getting fish daily is less difficult at the present than it has been for some time. Arno, who with his wife, maintains a residence in Anaheim, has been spending most of his time out of the store at the fish centers in order that the people of this city might have a variety of fresh fish daily. "It is our policy to handle only fish that have been freshly caught. In other words our customers are assured of just as fresh fish as those people who live at the beaches," said the genial market manager today.
