MATANUSKA—
WASHINGTON — Despite the prime argument that the New Deal's Matanuska valley resettlement project would supply some of the food which Alaska must otherwise import, Oklahoma's Senator Elmer Thomas, back in Washington last week after a month of Alaskan observation, declared Matanuska a flat failure, asserted that one-third of its transplanted families were ready to quit, that the cost of settling had mounted to $14,000 per family instead of an anticipated $3,500, that the experiment had been worth the money because it "proved once and for all that Alaska is not suitable for large-scale colonization."
lush but extremely short growing season made its vegetables bloated, watery. "taste like icicles." Potatoes must be dried in a slow oven before they can be stored even briefly. Alaskans generally refused to eat their native produce.
To this blast, Matanuska's Federal manager retorted that its 164 families had this year fed themselves, put 714 tons of hay and potatoes in storage, sold $4,000 worth of vegetables and creamery products.
NO AUTO'S ALLOWED—
MACKINAC ISLAND. Mich.—Relaxing its rule against automobiles for the first time last week. charming Mackinac Island summer resort at the northwest end of Lake Huron let one automobile ashore to carry a crippled man to the ferry, saw to it that the car went promptly back to the mainland with the man. Other islands banning automobiles: Bermuda, Sark in the English Channel, Venice.
HELL WEEK—
NEW YORK—At the University of Texas eight years ago, excited, giggling Delta Kappa Epsilon were numbed into silence when 19-year-old Nolte McElroy, bending to crawl through a set of bedsprings connected with city light wires, fainted from shock, died 15 minutes later. At Duke university last year, fraternity Pledge Einar A. Palmgren was stripped and painted with shellac, inadvertently ignited, hospitalized for severe burns.
Although most fraternity pledges fold a human eye (fried egg or oyster) or worms (cold spaghetti), the week after midyear examinations during which most United States campuses test their fraternity men is well named Hell Week. More favored by youngsters than by oldssters, the Hell Week doings of zealous local chapters are tut-tutted by the National InterFraternity conference representing the elders of 62 United States Greek Letter societies. Meeting in Manhattan last week the conference resolved "to give cordial support to measures to abolish Hell Week taken by any college or university."
BRIBE SCALE—
NANKING, China—To Mongol and Manchukuoan forces which have been invading strategic Sui-yuan province north of China's Great Wall, Premier and General-issimo Chiang Kai-Shek publicly offered last week in behalf of the Nanking government a scale of bribes or "rewards" to all who would transfer their allegiance to China: Private soldier $3, captain $600, major $1,500, colonel $3,000, pilot with plane $3,000, brigadier general $9,000, major general and lieut. general $15,000.
Although invading aviators complained that desertion with an airplane is certainly worth more than $5,000, the scale of bribes was otherwise esteemed just. Another itemized scale announced that Premier Chiang will pay $3,000 for an anti-aircraft gun; $900 for a tank; $300 for a machine gun; $9 for a rifle and $3 for a pistol.

Reason for this, explained Senator Thomas, was that Alaska's giggling Delta Kappa Epsilon were numbed into silence when 19-year-old Nolte McElroy, bending to crawl through a set of bed-springs connected with city light wires, fainted from shock, died 15 minutes later. Although most fraternity pledges survive their initiations, only suffer jitters from mouthing blindness.

Another itemized scale announced that Premier Chiang will pay $3,000 for an anti-aircraft gun; $900 for a tank; $300 for a machine gun; $9 for a rifle and $3 for a pistol.
Reason for Christian Premier Chiang's bribe-scale is that measurably fewer dollars and less Chinese blood will thus be expended than would be necessary to buy arms abroad and continue the fighting defense. Last week, however, the invaders were still invading.

4-H Club Members Attend Convention
Two Orange county 4-H club members are in attendance at the national convention of the American Farm Bureau federation which is being held in Pasadena this week. The members selected to represent Orange county are Miss Pauline Crawford, a senior member of the Tustin Livewires and Harry Hoskins, a senior member of the Katella Farmers of Anaheim. Both of these members have been active in 4-H club work for six years.
There are 75 club members from the various counties of the state in attendance at the convention. Besides attending the sessions and social activities of the meeting, the club members are invited to join the Japanese-German anti-communist impact, evidence was last week given that neither Britain nor France would sign. As press officers of His Majesty's government told correspondents that Britain could certainly be counted out, in Paris French Foreign Minister Yvon Delbos was believed to have covered substantially the attitude of Europe's two leading powers when he announced: "The accord of Germany and Japan is inspired by a crusading spirit which France, like England and all countries desirous of peace, refuses to accept. France does not wish to add to the all-too-real causes for conflict."
Meanwhile European observers believed Adolf Hitler had in this deal outsmarted the Japanese, who, having bitten off in China all they can effectively chew, were doubly menaced last week by completion of the Soviet's duplicate ("behind the mountains") strategic railway paralleling the Trans-Siberian. The more Red soldiers have to be flung over this line, the better Adolf Hitler who, according to predictions in Europe, envisions next spring as the time for a short, sharp drive to seize Leningrad, (cradle of the communistic dictatorship"), cause internal Russian disunion and the overthrow of Bolshevik leaders.
All illies whether they be physical or economic are but an effect of a cause. If our physical body becomes sick we seek the cause. When the cause is located we apply a remedy that will destroy the cause of our sickness. When the cause of our ill health has been destroyed the body again becomes healthy. The same attitude should be assumed in seeking to cure the ills of a nation. Things don't happen without a cause. If unemployment exists on a large scale it just doesn't happen to be. If the volume of business being experienced is not normal there is a reason. If a large proportion of the people are destitute and likely to so continue in old age there is a fundamental reason for such a condition. If the spirit of ambition to achieve honorably among the young folk has been replaced on a large scale with a tendency to crime there's a defect somewhere that should be located and remedied. That these evils ex-
Our raw materials abundant for producing the things the people need. In addition to the now employed them a great army of unemployed able of rendering both skilled unskilled services which under proper conditions could be used wealth production.
Now that it has been determined that there exists an abundance of the things generally used by the people, lets inquire if need the things which are sale.
They say, "Yes we need them We ask, "Are you buying things you need?" They answer, "No, we can't them."
We ask, "Why not?" They reply, "We have no reason because we have no work We say, "How does it come you have no work when such abundance of things have produced?" They answer, "Because imprisonment makes possible production without our help They add this statement," and because we haven't money cause we haven't work, they sell what they make."
The writer wonders if his rents will not agree that the ple have expressed at least one of the cause for the nation's employment, lack of business time and so forth. Is it not that the troubles of our nation find their base in economic times? If we have located them perhaps we can find a remedy our ills. Perhaps the Town plan might be the needed reel (To be Continued Next Week)
And yet the monoxide in streets isn't often as dangerous the peroxides.
