Studebaker, United States commissioner of education who is in general charge of the federal forums throughout the United States, is coming to Santa Ana, October 24, it is announced, to speak at the high school auditorium on that evening. It will be recalled that it was due to the life-long friendship between Dr. Studebaker and Frank A. Henderson, superintendent of Santa Ana school and himself administrator of the local forums, that Orange county was chosen as one of 10 centers throughout the country to launch the adult educational movement. The original educational experiment, sponsored by Dr. Studebaker, is now in its fourth year at Des Moines, Iowa. The educator's visit will be in a measure a tribute to the success during operations will be distributed free to those who need it. of the local forums, supervised by Homer C. Chaney. Reports indicate that close to 9,000 people have attended the various community meetings during the first four week period. Dr. Studebaker will arrive in Los Angeles by airplane the night of October 23 and conferences will be held Saturday prior to public meeting, Henderson said, His address, it was further said, will not deal with the forums but with the subject of education. The public is cordially invited to attend. Despite attempts to head off the fire by sinking cement walls, by forcing steam underground, by diverting a creek into a shaft, 12 millions tons of coal have been destroyed, 28 million tons more lie along the paths of the fire's slow advance. With mining engineers convinced that the fire could be confined within its present limits and allowed to burn itself out eventually by laying down massive barricades of non-infilammable material, WPA officials made plans some months ago to provide a year's work for 300 men, spend $360,000 of which New Straitsville would contribute some $32,000. Under the technical surveillance of the United States bureau of mines and Ohio state engineers, work started last week as WPA diggers attacked Plummer Hill with spades, and two steam shovels swung into action. One 600-foot tunnel barrier and two mile-long barricades, part tunnel and part open-cut, will be laid down. Holes will be filled with sludge, shafts, and cavities sealed to cut off air.
