Electrical Industry Conclave Begins In Los Angeles Today
Leaders of the electrical industry in Southern California will meet in Hollywood today and tomorrow for the annual fall conclave of the Pacific Coast Electrical association. More than 350 association members, representing virtually every branch of the electrical business, are to attend the sessions at the Roosevelt hotel. Local representation in the association includes electrical dealers and distributors, contractors and power company officials.
Fred B. Lewis, vice-president and general manager of the Southern California Edison company and president of the coast-wide association, will direct the program of discussion of administrative operation and sales problems.
Lewis is a former resident of Orange county.
"The electrical industry has moved forward steadily since it first took its place as one of the nation's major industries," Lewis said. "There have been, however, certain periods of special emphasis when it seemed advisable to pause, take stock of the situation, make some appraisal of new operations and to make any necessary adjustments for another forward step. Today the industry here in Southern California is far more advanced."
Fullerton Girl Is College Class Head
Miss Ella Ellis of Fullerton has been elected president of the senior class at Chapman college, Los Angeles, it was announced this week.
Miss Ellis has been active in rollment at Chapman college, specializing largely in music.

Today the industry here in Southern California is facing new problems accompanied by opportunities far excelling anything in its previous history. In the sales branch of our industry we now face a market which has been six years in building, and energetic people with an accumulation of six years' needs are ready and eager to buy electrical equipment to increase the comfort and convenience of their homes and to improve and speed up the work on their farms and in their industry dedicated to public service in the broadest sense and its members have a distinct obligation. Public attention has been focused sharply here in Southern California on the benefits of greater electrification. The completion of the Boulder dam project, with its power to supplement the existing steam-electric and hydro-electric power, re-emphasizes Southern California's leadership in electrical development.
"The electrical association is striving to accelerate the greater utilization of the power resources which are immediately and economically available to all Southern Californians. In its fall conclave, the association will devote itself to the development of an energetic and forward-looking program that will be of direct value not only to these engaged..."
POLLISIONS BETWEEN MOTORISTS AND PEDESTRIANS ARE NUMEROUS.
By 10,000 collisions involving pedestrians and motor vehicles place in 1935, according to a just released by Ray director of the state department of motor vehicles.
A large number of these occurrences at intersections. Ingels pointed out that care of pedestrians in cross-sections was largely relied upon persons were fatally injured 17 others hurt in Orlando from October to December 1935, in accidents of this report said.
Another we drive or not we pedestrians at times," the pointed out, "and it is us to be careful at all about especially now, as we entering the fall season when records show that those on and those who drive are more likely to get into smash-ups than other season. "For the seven years," he continued, another has shown a higher automobile-pedestrian accident than any other month."
It is said that out of 9947 accidents of this type, 4250 occurred intersections, while 2424 took between intersections.
Law provides, he said, that using the highway should along the left hand edge, so surface on-coming traffic. A period of time has demonstrated the value of this regulation but failure of pedestrians to obey this rule accounted for incidents.
Of the main factors in person fatalities he attributes to going out from behind parked vehicles caused 444 accidents.
Electrical Age Display Draws Large Audiences
All the southland is making obsence this week to the unseen miracle worker that lies hidden in copper wires.
Thousands of persons have visited the Electrical Age exposition, now running in Pan-Pacific auditorium, Los Angeles, and thousands more are expected to attend before the event draws to a conclusion next Sunday night, October 18.
Acting as the magnet for the throngs, the show delves into the future of electricity, and depicts on electrical age, which indicates present day mankind's understanding of the mysterious force has only had its inception.
Scientists from laboratories, far and near, are in charge of demonstrations given each afternoon and evening. The show runs from 1 o'clock to 11 o'clock daily.
In addition to these marvels, the application of electricity to household, as well as industrial needs, is told in striking displays. Virtually all of these exhibits are in motion, operated by the power that mankind has made his servant.
As for entertainment features, these are presented daily, with dancing girls vocalists and others vicing for applause, as they compete for attention against high voltage apparatus that spells a brilliant electrical future.
VOTERS:
You Can and Should Kill This Tax
Defeated once, the old Sales Tax on Food is back again in disguise... along with added taxes on other necessities of life
On your November ballot, it masquerades as a "Retail Store License"—Proposition #22.
But brought down to cases, it is a hidden sales tax on food and other necessities. A tax for the consumer to pay in higher prices.
It charges individual stores $1.00 a year for the right to do business. It taxes chain stores $500.00 for each store over nine. But it is you who will really profit. They eliminate middlemen's profits and unnecessary in-between expenses. The savings they make by operating efficiently are passed on to you in prices 10% below the average. The Harvard (University) School of Business Research states these to be the facts.
Thus chain stores must raise their prices or go out of business. If they raise prices, you will pay the tax.
If they go out of business, their competitors can raise prices even more—and
On your November ballot, it masquerades as a "Retail Store License"—Proposition #22.
But brought down to cases, it is a hidden sales tax on food and other necessities. A tax for the consumer to pay in higher prices.
It charges individual stores $1.00 a year for the right to do business. It taxes chain stores $500.00 for each store over nine. But it is you who will really pay.
For, as the U.S. Federal Trade Commission states...
“If the ability to undersell, based on greater efficiency or on elimination of credit and delivery cost, is destroyed by taxation, it is the consuming public which will really pay the tax and not the chain.”
Why? Because four out of five chain stores do not make enough profit to cover the tax.
For chain stores operate on a small profit.
If they go out of business, their competitors can raise prices even more—and you will pay.
Further, this tax is admittedly not for revenue purposes. It is a subsidy for wasteful business methods—at your expense.
So if you think that chain store competition helps to keep all prices in line with your pocketbook—if you are opposed to higher taxes on foods and other necessities—vote NO and keep prices low.
For no matter what name they give it...no matter how cleverly they disguise it...22 is a tax on you—VOTE NO!
RETAIL STORE LICENSE Referendum against act of Legislature (Chapter 849, Statutes 1935) requiring every person or organization owning, operating or controlling one or more stores, wherein merchandise is sold at retail, obtains annual State license; prescribing fifty cents application fee for each store and one dollar license fee for one store, increasing license fee progressively for second and additional stores to five hundred dollars for each store over nine; excepts nilling stations, ice distributing establishments, restaurant facilities of common carriers, newspaper offices, stores wherein salts are incidental to rendering personal service, theatres and motion picture houses.
