Irrigation For Walnuts Advised At This Season
Examinations made in the past week, particularly in orchards where cover crops have been applied since last fall, reveal the soil to be dry, according to Farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg.
Concerning cultural operations which are timely for this season, Wahlberg pointed out that turning under cover crops and supplying moisture deficiencies are the two outstanding important things which should be done now. Cover crops were described as pulling water out of the ground rapidly. In some instances, drying out has been so complete in the first foot that discing under the cover crop will be difficult because of hard ground. If such cover crop growth has developed rainfall only, without supplemental irrigation, the orchard soil does not contain enough water for the next couple of months, the Farm Advisor stated, adding that there were too many orchards which had not been irrigated following the harvest.
Reduced incomes requiring economy and optimistic expectation of copious rains are the reasons for this situation, he pointed out. The results on this year's crop will be small sizes and, if permitted to continue, will affect the quality of the kernel.
This irrigation and cultivation advice should not be limited to walnut ordchards, but is applicable to deciduous fruit orchards, vineyards, and berry plantings, as well, it was pointed out. In the latter two instances, the situation is not so critical because fewer cover crops are grown in con-
ORANGE CO. MEN ATTEND CONFERENCE
Walter Pollard, Tustin, and Farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg will represent agricultural interests of Orange County at the state-wide conference at Berkeley next Monday and Tuesday to consider the new Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment program recently enacted by Congress. The conference is called by Secretary of Agriculture Wallace to advise state farm leaders regarding the stabilizing intents of the new farm program and offer instructions for carrying the program into the districts of the state.
In early April several community meetings will be held in Orange County to familiarize local farmers with details of the new farm adjustment plan.
The act will be administered in Orange County by a county committee, according to Wahlberg. This committee will be elected by the district group meetings when called in April.
California is included in the Western Division of the new regional administrative set-up. The Western Division, in charge of Director George E. Farrell, also includes North Dakota, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
The work of the four former commodity divisions of the Agricultural Adjustment Administration now liquidating the production adjustment programs will be part of the duties of the new regional divisions. A state committee will be established in each state with three to five members, the majority of whom will be pro-

Contract Award For Manchester Road Planned
The first week in June has been set as the time for the warding of the contract for the construction of Manchester boulevard through the Anaheim city limits together with the contract for the widening of Manchester between Lincoln boulevard and Norwalk, according to City Engineer E. P. Hapgood. Ralph D. Kinsey is resident engineer on the project.
Papers approving the construction have been sent to the Bureau of Public Roads at Washington, D.C. for study. Federal finances will be added to the gas tax money of the state in financing the project.
Plans include a 30 foot pavement and 30 foot oiled shoulders in Anaheim territory. An 80 foot right of way from Lincoln to Walnut has been obtained. Curbings, 74 feet apart will extend this distance. The railroad right of way New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
The work of the four former commodity divisions of the Agricultural Adjustment Administration now liquidating the production adjustment programs will be part of the duties of the new regional divisions. A state committee will be established in each state with three to five members, the majority of whom will be producers.
In his message to the farm leaders who attended the regional conference on the Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act held recently at Calt Lake, the Secretary of Agriculture pointed out that the national goal of the tentative program for 1936 calls for shifting 30 million acres now in soil-depleting crops into self-conserving or soil-building crops, and that the proposed administrative democratic in the field would be democratic in principle and procedure, built around county associations of farmers, represented by county and community committees.
LEND AN EAR,
MR. CONGRESSMAN
Japan is flooding this country, with many articles of a high grade, but produced by slave labor, which come in direct competition to the same goods made here. That foreign stuff comes in free of duty in great part. The result is the American producer goes out of business. Put a tariff on those foreign goods and give the home man a chance!

A 72 foot pavement is planned for the distance west of the tracks.
