Political Mistake
Without going into the question of the propriety or lack of propriety of the retirement of Major General Hagood of the United States Army for criticism alleged to have been heaped on certain New Deal policies in a hearing before the House Appropriations Committee some time ago, it is evident that from a political standpoint the action of the department was a serious mistake. It has afforded opponents of the National Administration an opportunity to pour more oil on the fire of political opposition by charging that the right of free speech has been interfered with and that the retirement smacks of European fascism.
For example, Senator Hastings, of Deleware, charged that the action is part of a “reign of terror” to check criticism of the New Deal and he added: “Freedom of the press has been helped by the Supreme Court, but what we need is freedom of speech as well.”
A front-page two column editorial in the Hearst newspapers, commenting on the incident is headed “Tyranny Running True to Form.” Congressman Blanton, of Texas, is quoted as stating that when General Hagood was given permission to testify before the House Committee, he was given permission to testify fully and freely and that no restrictions were placed on him.
According to newspaper reports a statement from the White House said that President Roosevelt personally had nothing to do with the order and had no comment to make.
Defense by Administration leaders on Capitol Hill claimed that Hagood’s retirement was a rountine matter. Again it was charged that previous Republican administrations had gone even further in disciplining military men for critical

According to newspaper reports a statement from the White House said that President Roosevelt personally had nothing to do with the order and had no comment to make.
Defense by Administration leaders on Capitol Hill claimed that Hagood's retirement was a rountine matter. Again it was charged that previous Republican administrations had gone even further in disciplining military men for critical remarks. The latter argument is not exactly convincing, however, in that it seeks to excuse the action of the Department in General Hagood’s case by charging that Republican administrations had done likewise. Two wrongs do not make a right, if two wrongs were committed, and the contintion lacks force, unless it is to be assumed that the Department in the present instance was right because the Republicans did it first.
Be that as it may, further indication of the inadvisability of the action taken can be found in the fact that General Hagood’s remarks, made many days ago, in which he referred to WPA funds as “stage money” and criticized “extravagance” of the WPA in comparison with expenditures for the Army, had been practically forgotten by the public until the General was retired. Then they immediately were recalled by opponents of the Administration and were displayed on front pages of hostile newspapers, and coupled with charges that a new “reign of terror” had commenced.
General Hagood, who is a native of South Carolina, has been defended by some Democratic leaders, as well as by the opposition. They point to his longand honorable war record as a reason why he should not have been retired at this time, immediately following his criticism of WPA expenditures.
The statemen in Washington are debating whether or not a beauty parlor should be opened in the Capitol for the two women Senators. The gallant and proper way to answer this question would be to say that the parlor isn’t needed.
One of our ruthless individualist friends is unkind enough to say that the New Deal would have been impossible had the Socialists copyrighted their 1932 platform.
Times have certainly improved. In the old days they used to pop corn and eat apples when they had a party. Now they drink both the corn and apple and save a lot of time and effort.
Well, nobody may take a walk from the Republican National Convention, but judging from the number of prospective G. O. P. candidates it may be necessary to take somebody for a ride.

There's one thing that has been deriving me for some time...that is the marking on some items in the city hall...on one it says...quote...Court notice...unquote...and on the other it says quote again...in Department...again unquote...maybe someone can gain this little detail...it is the doors lead to the police fire departments...and too, Judge Frank Tausch has official quarters in that part of the building...o well, who is anyway...
Attended a real political gathering Sunday...but first must you how I spent Saturday at under the Oaks...or maybe as the pines or anyway some...Ray Smith...ain't he real though...he took me in...no, I guess you spell that...and we journeyed through Rancho del Irvine for miles smiles...until eventually we subdivision called Vista...Spanish interpreter says that its well anyway its a big city and a few feet from heart of town Ray owns anyway...has a ranch in the musical world for a long time before they decided to find out that music went round and round...we went round and round and found Dan...
Dan's a feila that has a grocery store down in the southern metropolis and Dan decided we liked being ex-soldiers...er something...ham and eggs so...we had some ham and eggs Sunday morning.
Ray decided then it was time to go to Escondido...for the specific purpose of attending a Legion meeting...we arrived there at 9 a.m. can you imagine anyone out that early on Sunday morning? Well we were...and will wonders never cease?
Ben Lieberman was there to take in the meeting...seems like he got a long way away from home.
Well, Seal Beach wanted the next meeting so Ray voted for Laguna Beach and the post at Seal Beach has appointed a committee to arrange a pleasant Sunday on July 26 for the Area Meeting in that city.
I know that because Earl Fuifer and I did some blind flying last Monday night and after taking off from Anaheim in Earl's cabin job with a zero ceiling we made the beach city in time to catch the boys going home...no they didn't go right away...and all the fog was between here and the seashore...no, no, we weren't foggy...just the weather.

THE LOGICAL CANDIDATE Editor Gazette:
There is a belief—a rapidly growing belief, that the next president of the United States will be chosen at the Cleveland convention in June. Chief interest therefore in the campagin which is already beginning to simmer centers about the various candidate being entered by their friends for the Republican nomination. Should the G. O. P. act with its usual acumen and sound judgment and select a man who would be satisfactory to the numerous elements and factious now antagonistic to the New Deal it would spell the doom of Roosevelt and his brain trust in November. The necessity for putting an end to the wild orgy of spending, the unbridled extravagance of the present government at Washington will be one of the main issues discussed in the campaign and one of the chief reforms demanded. Every thinking citizen who is capable of interpreting the appalling figures of the mounting debt realizes that the country is rushing headlong toward bankruptcy and disaster, and that there must be a radical change in the administration of affairs if the nation is to recover and return to normalcy.
The old order changeth and it is patent to all that some new system of government must be developed to meet the exigencies of the future confiscatory taxation and the indiscriminate scatterment of money so raised may record they have written the past three years drag it through the cam Republicans are not on point with pride in them but can turn to a fresh write an entirely new set of principles. In addition they will probably be wired to select a standard b has had no connection government and who history is yet to be Among the men so far for leadership, Gov. A of Kansas stands in this as the logical candidate.
Roosevelt will again Democrats and Landowners rect antithesis. Roose defend the unparallele palling extravagance of ministration whereas motto is, "To keep the futures of a state within of its revenues is the

record they have written during the past three years and must drag it through the campaign. The Republicans are not obligated to point with pride in their platform but can turn to a fresh page and write an entire new declaration of principles. In addition to this they will probably be wise enough to select a standard bearer who has had no connection with past government and whose official history is yet to be written. Among the men so far mentioned for leadership, Gov. Alf Landon of Kansas stands in the forefront as the logical candidates.
Roosevelt will again lead the Democrats and Landon is his direct antithesis. Roosevelt must defend the unparalleled and appalling extravagance of his administration whereas Landon's motto is, "To keep the expenditures of a state within the limits of its revenues is the essence of good government." With Landon at the helm Kansas is the only state in the union that has been guided through the lean years years with a balanced budget. Such a man is needed in command of the Federal ship of state to prevent its foundering on the rocks.
Seventy-five years ago when the nation was confronted with the greatest crisis in its history the people went out into the rural regions and carried a bucalic Cincinnatians to the capitol to guide them through the darkness that encompassed them. Lincoln had received no previous training at Washington but he used his native wisdom and homely common sense in the management of public affairs thereby saving the union from disution. Again the nation is threatened with disaster and again a Cincinnatus is needed to preserve it. With Alf Landon
in the White House, with the communistic and socialistic brain trusters in the discard, with commonsense and good judgment being brought to bear on the problems of government, the country would begin to breathe again. Confidence would be restored, business revived, industry of every kind stimulated and the laborer would again find a market for his commodity free from the taint of charity.

-MR. CITRUS GROWER
IF YOU, a citrus grower, have not yet identified yourself with a citrus marketing group, it is to your own advantage to do so now.
Today, as never before, the interests of the individual are inseparably linked with the general welfare of all within the industry.
Industry-wide regulation places a premium on cooperative action. United, those within an industry can speak for their rights and be heard.
From the immediate and practical standpoint of the individual grower, affiliation with a group will save much of the difficulties of conforming with the weekly pro-rate.
Cooperation has brought many advantages to the citrus industry in times past. For example, it has made possible the stimulation of demand through advertising.
Today competing fruits are fighting for a share of the citrus market. Only unified action can save what is our own, or can offer opportunity for the further improvement of our condition.
We of the California Fruit Growers Exchange urge you to join a group. For a better-organized, quicker-acting citrus industry is the first need of the day. The reasons for your taking such action were never so strong—the reasons for holding apart never so few. We welcome an opportunity to discuss this subject further with you.
