Sociologist Says Railway Crossings Must Be Abolished
Prof. Case of U. S. C. Blames Human Nature for Lapses That Prove Fatal
Abolition of grade crossings is the only solution in remedying the situation where numerous lives are taken annually at railroad crossings in the opinion of Dr. Clarence Marsh Case, professor of sociology at the University of Southern California, who has been conducting a series of traffic studies.
"Human nature is characterized by absent-mindedness, lapses of attention, recklessness, over-confidence, or even conceit in many cases," declared the U. S. C. sociologist. "That is the way a considerable fraction of normal human beings act most of the time, and also the way a still larger fraction acts some of the time.
"In others, age or personality traits render drivers incapable of holding the various factors of the situation well in hand or even in mind. When suddenly confronted with the on-rushing destruction it is natural to become confused or temporarily paralyzed in some respects."
"The problem has to be solved in the certain knowledge that it will continue to be that way, although much can be done to guide and safeguard it through the perfecting of adequate motorways," Dr. Case continued.
"The only solution lies in the separation of grades, even at the cost of many millions. It will never be solved by trying to change the ways of the people. Human nature is against that plan, and it simply won't meet the situation," he said.

From September to October the index of prices for these commodities rose from 78 to 84. Among the specific farm products, the major increases in prices were shown by dairy products, field crops excluding grains, oranges, lemons and apples. Recent weather conditions have been generally favorable to agriculture, the rains having increased soil moisture sufficiently

Improper Lighting Is Chief Cause of Eye Strain, Claim
Experts Find Not Lack of Light Over Desk But Throughout Room Fatiguing
Improper desk lighting is the chief cause of eye fatigue among students, investigations carried on in the physics department of the University of Southern California for the past several years have revealed.
It has been found that the worst fault is not in lack of light directly over the desk, but lack of illumination in the immediate vicinity of the desk," declared Dr. A. W. Nye, chairman of the U. S. C. department of physics. "A small spot on the desk has been too bright in comparison with its surroundings and a condition of excessive contrast has been set up which results in eye fatigue.
"The center of the eye reacts to the high brightness, while the peripheral portions of the eye react to the low brightness, resulting in a continual struggle on the part of the eye muscles to adapt both conditions at once.
"The remedy for this condition is not to decrease the desk illumination, but to raise the general illumination of the surroundings, and in some cases the entire room, thus reducing the contrasts," Dr. Nye explained.
Another prominent fault contributing to eye fatigue is the presence of glare, the U. S. C. investigations found.
"Injurious glare arises from mirror-like reflections from shiny paper, bright metal gloss varnish, and similar sources," the scientist declared. "To avoid it, the light sources should be as diffused as possible and the desk top should be covered with a buff colored
