Anaheim, Calif., April 5, 1934 BUILDING PERMITS AHEAD As far as building permits go, March fell way below the same month last year, but for the first three months of 1934 permits totaled $26,376 against $17,837 for 1933. March permits were $1800 as compared with $10,375 last year. DR. HOUCK IS WINNER Anaheim's golfing dentist, Dr. Fred H. Houck, shot 81 over the week-end at the Hacienda country club which, when his handicap was subtracted, gave him the winning 63 in a tournament that aroused considerable interest. C. A. Rees was second. (Political Advertisement) PLACE YOUR VOTE ON A MAN WHO IS CERTAIN TO BE ELECTED A house to house canvass has just been completed in Anaheim and in the preliminary poll Herb Oelke, for city clerk, is far ahead. A vote for Oelke is the easiest way to give you a change, if you want a new city clerk. NOTE: Reports are circulated around to the effect that it will cost the City of Anaheim $2000 to teach a new clerk his official duties. Remember this when you vote. Herb Oelke knows the duties of the city clerk so, consequently, there will be no cost to the city government when he takes over the clerkship. It’s the thrifty thing to do, in household or business. An old subscriber tells us, who discontinued her telephone in recent months and now is ordering her service restored, “I found that my telephone saved strength and time more than I had ever dreamed, and more nickels, dimes and quarters than its monthly service costs.” Nothing does so much for so little as your telephone. This poisons your whole body. Movements get hard and constipated. You get yellow tongue, yellow skin, pimples, dull eyes, bad breath, bad taste, gas, dizziness, headache. You have become an ugly-looking, foul-smelling, sour-thinking person. You have lost your personal charm. Everybody wants to run from you. But don’t take salts, mineral waters, oils, laxative pills, laxative candies or chewing gums and expect them to get rid of this poison that destroys your personal charm. The can’t do it, for they only move out the tail end of your bowels and that doesn’t take away enough of the decayed poison. Cosmetics won’t help at all. Only a free flow of your bile juice will stop this decay poison in your bowels. The one milk vegetable medicine which starts a free flow of your bile juice is Carter’s Little Liver Pills. No calomel (mercury) in Carter’s. Only fine, mild vegetable extracts. If you would bring back your personal charm to win men, start taking Carter’s Little Liver Pills according to directions today. 256 at drug stores. Dance Easter Monday Social Event One of Most Successful in Long String of Affairs Three hundred couples this week looked back upon the Y.L.I.'s traditional Easter Monday dance, this year held at the Elks clubhouse, as one of the most successful of a long string of successful social events which traditionally open a new season following Lent. Mrs. William LeVecke and Mrs. Pete Fluor, co-chairmen of general arrangements, received many congratulations upon the artistic decorations, which transformed the hall into an attractive Spanish patio, reminiscent of California's missions. The stage was made into a mission belfry, with three great bells hung from the tower. Colorful Spanish shawls hung in archways made of decorations on the walls. Miss Mayme Dillon, president of the Young Ladies Institute, greeted the guests. Harold William Roberts directed Mel Ruick's orchestra during the first part of the evening. Amy Ann Monninget and Bud Kennedy delighted the dancers with tap dancing numbers, later distributing Easter egg favors, filled with confetti. Supper was served at 11:30 o'clock. Committee chairmen who were responsible for the success of the affair were Nell Robertson, Estelle Bastian, decorations; Opal Rimpau, Laura Harland, refreshments; Agnes Stilwell, Helen Volz, finances; Esther Kramer, Marie Cline, orchestra and Marie Robertson, reservations. Besides these the general committee included Carrie Yorba, Marian Harlow, Viola Vejar, Eva Roy, Blanche Peltzer, Mary Ellen Chambers, Juana Lopera, Connie Morganthaler, Marian Bushman, Adeline McBride, Isabel Dolan, "No!" she cried passionately, "no, no!" Exultation leaped into Roemer's face. He had suffered agonies of shame because Richard had taken her away from him that night! "Nancy!" his feverish eyes searched her face, "answer me—have you ever been his wife—except in name?" She drew a deep breath. "Nb." she whispered it, her head drooping, "never — never — I came home!" Page gave a great gasp of joy. "God," he cried, "God, I'll take her away from him yet!" The fury of his passion transformed him; his handsome smooth young face was furrowed—not with love but with hate, his hatred and his jealousy of Richard. Nancy saw it; something in his very passion was selfish and cruel; it reached her; suddenly, shaken as she was, she thought of Richard. Would Page have spared her as Richard had? "You mustn't say such things, Page," she said weakly, "and I—I mustn't hear them, I—" she could not finish her sentence. He caught her hands almost roughly in his. "Answer me," he gasped hoarsely. SPORT HOSIERY Now Go On With the Story Then, either the visitor had found out all she wanted to, or she was tired of it; she was actually going. Nancy heard their movements in the hall. Mrs. Gordon came back, panting. "Oh, Nancy, do you think she—she knows anything?" Nancy ehook her head doubtfully. "How can she? Unless—" There was Beaver, but Nancy would not believe that. It was too much. "I think she only wanted you to talk about Richard." Mrs. Gordon's face changed. "I didn't know that he—that they had ever been engaged!" she said blankly. "Anyway, he's in love with you. Nancy. I know that!" A strange smile twisted Nancy's lips. "Perhaps he isn't now," she said briefly. "perhaps he doesn't like a secret in the family—and I—" she laughed wildly—"I threw my self at his head, Mama." "Oh, Nancy!" her mother blushed like a girl. But Nancy did not blush, she turned suddenly white to the lips and caught at Mrs. Gordon's hand convulsively. "There's Page Roemer coming in the gate—oh, Mama, what shall I do? What shall I do?" she cried. Amanda's dusky face appeared at the door. "Mist' Page Roemer, Miss Nancy," she said softly, showing the whites of her eyes. "I said mebe yo' was in an again mebbe you' warnn't but he's waitin', says he's gwinter wait till he sees yo' anyways, yes, m'm." "That's all right, Mandy. I'll see Mr. Roemer." Mrs. Gordon gave a little gasp and let the girl's hand slip. She was as eager to escape as Amanda. Left alone to face the inevitable, Nancy dreaded it. Now, fresh from the thought of Richard's repudiation, of Richard's rage at her fear of him, she must face Page. "Come in here please, Page," she said faintly. But he heard it, and came into the library. As the sunlight struck his face, Nancy saw the wreck of it. Page had been suffering, too, and the sight of his haggard eyes wrung her with a pang sharper than her own self pity. They stood looking at each other dumbly for a moment. He was the first to recover himself enough to speak. "I got your note," he said harshly. "I don't understand." A deeper wave of crimson went up over Nancy's tremulous face and her hate, his hared and his jealousy of Richard. Nancy saw it; something in his very passion was selfish and cruel; it reached her; suddenly, shaken as she was, she thought of Richard. Would Page have spared her as Richard had? “You mustn't say such things, Page,” she said weakly, “and I—I mustn't hear them, I—” she could not finish her sentence. He caught her hands almost roughly in his. “Answer me,” he gasped hoarsely, “tell me the truth—you don't love him—did you have to marry him Nancy?” Page Roemer's look seemed to her only the mad passion of his love. "Yes," she answered faintly, not understanding, "I had to marry him Page." She was too clean-souled to understand. Attention Voters! I AM AGAIN A CADIDATE FOR CITY CLERK, and wish to quote from the Anaheim Bulletin, issue of April 22, 1932, under the heading: "POLITICS MAKE TASK OF PICKING MERRITT'S SUCCESSOR INVOLVED." Members of the council have admitted that perhaps the stricter honorable thing to do would be to appoint Charles Griffith who was second high man in the recent election contest. Griffith drew 1032 votes to Merritts 1319." The appointment was given to the incumbent who was not a candidate in the election. I have resided in Anaheim almost eleven years and have been a continuous resident since January, 1932. Owing to a death in my immediate family I visited relatives in Santa Barbara for about two months a year ago. This is a purely personal matter, but the absence is being used as propaganda, I understand, by my opponents. In all white with built-up heels, flaps if Desired in all the Latest Cutout Effects .... She averted her face from Page's eyes, clasping her hands behind her back. "I don't understand," Page repeated hoarsely. "What did you mean, Nancy?" "What I said; my—my marriage is to be a secret." "A secret?" there was a new note in his astonished voice. "Why?" She recognized the note in it and she winced. "I don't want it known—yet." He caught his breath. She didn't love Morgan, she wanted to hide her marriage—please God, he'd get her yet! "Nancy, you don't love him! You're sorry you did it—you want to keep it secret because you can't bear it! You—" he came nearer, suddenly he flung himself down beside her. "Nancy, you're not living with him—you're here—you're not actually his wife!" he gasped. Richard would have known it, but Page dropped her hands and rose to his feet, tramping up and down the room like a madman. He had loved her, loved her deeply, and Richard had robbed him. Richard must have done what he would never have dared to do. She—God, was she worthless? He could not believe it, yet she said so. Yet—he drew an agonized breath, he couldn't give her up, he'd get her away from Richard yet, damn him! He—Page clenched his fist, he would like to shoot him, but, if he did, if it came out—poor Nancy! She—? He stopped short in his walk and stood thinking; was she worth the struggle?
