early day, who erected the Planters and old Anahelm hotels in this city, and the famous Pico house which still is standing in Los Angeles.
Mr. Sheffield was fond of shrubbery and grew many rare and beautiful plants, of which two Crepe Myrtle trees now adorn the front walkway, near the original fountain, which still stands. The original barns were large, while Mr. Backs recently cut off the casing of an old well.
According to the present owner, who obtained the property in 1921, the old place was the home of the C. H. Gosch family after Mr. Sheffield had died and the widow had married John W. Hart and moved to Los Angeles. A family by the name of Glusbach later occupied the building. The original 20 acres of the Sheffield place was subdivided by a Mr. Rothermel about 1910. At the time Mr. Backs purchased the place the original large rooms had been partitioned off, making a total of five apartments, some or all of which have been occupied to the present time.

ment in cutting administrative costs,
building up a cash reserve, paying off bonded indebtedness and arrangement
of the budget in such a way that its bonds sell at a premium, while at the same time slashing assessed valuations $1,953,340 and cutting the tax rate from $1.25 to 90 cents, leaves no question as to the efficiency of the city government under the direct supervision of the council. Even the opposition ticket, headed by E. E. (Doc) Long, has no quarrel with this record.
Supporters of the incumbents point to their record as taxpayers, as progressive and successful business men, and to their faith and confidence in Anaheim and its future, as other good reasons why they should be returned to office by the voters next Monday.
In analyzing the arguments against the administration, friends of the incumbents point to Long's inferences that the Anaheim Union Water company dominates the city because of the program of covering up open ditches along East and Sycamore streets, in which the cit yagreed to aid the unemployed by using script, and guaranteeing it, instead of usual one-fourth assessment against the property owners. The city ordinarily stood one-fourth the cost. Since the script plan failed, the total city cost was $2930.35; the total cost to the Anaheim Union was $3998.03. One of Long's chief supporters, Jake Lakeman, voted "aye" for the resolution on February 23, 1932.
Another inconsistency of criticism is revealed in another column of this newspaper, showing the type of campaign resorted to in an effort to underline confidence in the present city council.

Extra Pair Pants Sought by Salvage Campaign of Army
Is there an extra pair of pants in Southern California?
Page the man who has the favorable answer because the Salvation Army wants to know. According to army officials who ought to know, there is a dirth of pants in the south end of the state.
"There seems still to be coats and vests and what-not, in small quantities" states Major Sydney L. Cooke of the Men's Social Service, "but as for pants, our shelves have been bare for a long time."
Patches are the vogue but there must be a frame upon which to hang a patch. We had a man come in to one of our Salvation Army industrial centers recently with a button. He wanted us to sow a pair of pants around it.
"This is salvage month in Anaheim and we are asking all our citizens to come to the rescue of the army with cast-off clothing of all kinds."
Drop a post card to local Army headquarters, 227 East Center street, and a red shield truck will call for your donation.
Dr. and Mrs. H. G. Carlin had as guests during the week. Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Neeley and daughter, Ellen, of Venice. Mrs. Neeley, formerly Miss Helen Browning is a native of Anaheim the daughter of a well known pioneer family.
