Edison Co. Starts Its Big Project Orders Placed for Steel for Use In Orange County and Elsewhere The Southern California Edison Co., Ltd., has placed orders for 4000 tons of structural steel for its $1,500,000 major transmission line construction project in the Southland, including Orange county and the Stanton substation and transmission line project. The steel has been ordered from California steel companies. Construction Starts at Once Fred B. Lewis, vice-president and assistant general manager of the Edison company, announced that the major project will be started immediately and will provide work for 200 men for six months. An additional 300 men in the steel industry will be engaged for a like period of time on fabrication of the steel towers required for the lines. Construction of the transmission lines originally was planned for 1932, Mr. Lewis said, but the company's program was advanced in order to enable the company to take advantage of the present price of steel and to keep workmen busy. Prices on materials at this time are at such a low level, Mr. Lewis pointed out, that it is possible for the company to set forward its construction program in this manner at no added cost. 15 Miles of Multiple Circuit The transmission lines will extend the Edison company's 220,000-volt and subtransmission system into old established territory where the growth of demand for electric service has been given impetus by domestic, agricultural and industrial developments. Fifteen miles of multiple circuit, steel tower lines will be constructed to form a connection between the company's Lighthipe substation and the Stanton substation, the latter scheduled for construction next year. The Lighthipe station is between Long Beach and Compton. The projected Stanton station will be built at a cost of $1,500,000 on a site near Stanton station, two miles west of Anaheim. $5,000,000 Projects In addition, fifteen miles of subtransmission line will be built to distribute energy from the Stanton station to points in Orange county and to establish new connections with other major switching stations in the southeastern section of the Edison company territory in Southern California. The Stanton substation and transmission line project will represent a $5,000,000 investment when completed and will make available 200,000 new horsepower of electric energy for service in the company's southeastern territory. This report, just published, shows California leading in total number of cows under test and in percentage of total cows of the state in testing associations, as it did last year. Cow testing work throughout the country made slight increases last year; the report shows, seemingly a reflection of the depressed prices for dairy products. There was a gain in the whole country of but 3165 cows, of six-tenths of 1 per cent. This increase was due to the gain in average number of cows in associations, as there was a slight decrease in total number of associations. California Shows Increase "California showed an increase in total number of cows and in number of associations as well," says G. E. Gordon, dairy specialist in the University of California Agricultural Extension Service. "In only two years since cow testing work was started in this state has there been a decrease. One of these periods came during the World War and the other in 1924, which was due to foot and mouth disease. Dalrymen having found testing work of real value are not only maintaining the cows under test, but are showing some increases. This work is particularly valuable as an aid in tiding the Dalrymen over this period of low prices." The total number of cows under test in regularly organized associations January 1 in California was 79,302, which is 12.9 per cent of all cows in the This state has there been a decrease. The second state in total number of cows under test is Wisconsin, with 59,410. The next states in order of number of cows under test are: Iowa, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Michigan. State Tests Most Cows In percentage of cows under test, California leads with 12.9, with Arizona in second place with 8 per cent. New Jersey is third with 7 per cent. Other states follow in order of percentage: New Hampshire, Oregon, Vermont, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia. The growth of testing in California has been consistent and rather rapid during the past few years. The work started in 1909 in Humboldt County, and has continued ever since. The most noticeable increase was after 1915, with the development of the Agricultural Extension Service, and then again since 1922, with the development of a definite dairy improvement program which uses cow testing association work as a foundation. All the cows listed above in California are in regularly organized standard California cow testing associations, supervised by the Agricultural Extension Service of the University of California, operating under standard rules and uniform methods, in line with those adopted by the American Dairy Science Association and the Department of Agriculture.
