Silvertown Safety League Being Formed in Anaheim State, county and city officials of California, apprised of the constructive work to the Silvertown Safety League, this week co-operated whole heartedly with the B. F. Goodrich Rubber company in stressing the necessity of motorists to drive safely in order to reduce accidents, which each year draws a terrible toll in excess of America's cost in life during the World War. Police Chief Signs Up Chief of Police J. S. Bouldin has signed one of the Silvertown Safety League pledges and urged residents of Anaheim and vicinity to do like wise, first reading the nine sections of the pledge to recall to their mind the chief safety measures necessary to reduce the toll of motor car accidents. One of Anaheim's younger business men, Councillman Leo F. Sheridan, has also enthused over the campaign. "When one stops to consider that 32,500 people were killed in automobile accidents in 1930—more than the American Expeditionary forces lost during the world war—the death toll from accidents is appalling. Deaths from automobile accidents have shown a large increase each successive year, totaling 296 per cent increase in 1930 over those of 1916. Increased usage of automobiles partly accounts for that, but in creasing laxity of drivers is the primary cause. Of course, automobiles are faster and more powerful, the roads are much better, but so are the machines. Manufacturers have stressed safety measures for automobiles—four wheel brakes are universal; shatter-proof windshields are increasingly popular; increased ease for shifting, and increased tenil strength of all important parts of the automobile should make for greater safety. But the human element remains lax." Learn to Drive Safely "We must learn that to drive safely we must drive properly. Observe the stations listed in the Silvertown Safety League pledge were fundamental and should receive the careful study of each motorist. The nine sections are: 1. To drive at speeds in keeping with the safety of others as well as myself. 2. To keep on the right side of the road, except when passing. 3. To pass only when I know there is ample time and space—never on a blind curve or when nearing a crest of a hill. 4. To go through intersections only when I have the right of way. 5. To observe all traffic signals. 6. To give signals myself that can be clearly seen and understood, before turning or stopping in traffic. 7. To drive only when in full possession of my faculties. 8. To keep my brakes, lights and horn in good condition. 9. To operate my car on tires which assure a positive grip on the road—safe traction—and freedom from hazardous tire failures. Anaheim Is Cooperating Southeast Distributors, Inc., distributors of this territory for Goodrich Silvertowns with offices at Center and Palm streets, were selected by President J. D. Tew of Goodrich Rubber company to handle the campaign of the firm in this district. Ralph Mengel, store manager, says that Anaheim residents have been more than willing to co-operate in the campaign, many signing the pledge and qualifying for emblems denoting them as a member of the drive to reduce the terrible traffic toll. President Jack Thomas of Southeast Distributors Inc., was particularly impressed Thursday with the growing public interest in promoting greater safety among autoists. "In my opinion, he said, 'the more alert public opinion becomes to this menacing question, the more progress shall be made in reducing accidents.' Peck, for eight years a resident of Anaheim, and for two years a used car dealer in this city, this week received congratulations from scores of friends as a result of his appointment as Studebaker agent for Anaheim. Mr. Peck will maintain both his used car lot, which is situated at Center and Helena streets, and the building formerly occupied by Richartz at 113 South Palm Street, where he now has on display Studebaker's free-wheeling cars that are attracting considerable attention. "Our service will extend beyond the purchase of new machines," Mr. Peck stated. "We have a factory-trained expert, J. T. May, who will service all Studebaker cars, and take care of all inspection. We feel that having a machines brought in for repair work or specially-trained mechanic we can get out of all Studebakers the exceptionally good service built into them. This applies not only on machines which we will sell, but for all owners of Studebaker cars in this territory." "Of course, I am happy to be named Studebaker dealer for Anaheim. This is a very good territory, and with the famous Studebaker President and Commander champions, as well as the Dictator, all with free-wheelling. I have a line which is most certain to appeal to every family desiring fine cars." R. and B Buys Local Cut Rate Drug Store R. and B. President Jack Thomas of Southeast Distributors Inc., was particularly impressed Thursday with the growing public interest in promoting greater safety among autoists. "In my opinion, he said, 'the more alert public opinion becomes to this menacing question, the more progress shall be made in reducing accidents.' Police records indicate that three fourths of the accidents could have been avoided. It is this accident prevention that we want to accomplish, because after one is laid-up in the hospital the damage in that particular accident is done. We must concentrate on prevention, and in order to do that, public opinion must be aroused much more than it is at present." A SECURE HEM When you hem a skirt, take a double stitch every inch or so. College Takes Up Study of Heaters (Continued from Page 1) Million or More Heaters It is likely that attachments can be adapted to a large percentage of the million or more of this type of heater now in use so as to greatly reduce their smokiness. However, the inherent tendency to wrap will require extra labor for servicing and therefore increase operating costs. It seems doubtful if any more heaters of this type should be manufactured. In addition to providing data for the committee, this investigation will serve as the foundation for two series of meetings to be conducted by the Agricultural Extension Service in cooperation with a growers' committee. One series of meetings will inform growers regarding differences in types of heaters and necessary changes in stacks, drafts, etc., so as to reduce the smoke output. The second series of meetings will deal with methods of operation, regulation and cleaning of heaters so as to produce the most heat with the least smoke. Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Connecticut, in the order named, are the most densely populated states in the union.
