Annual Convention of Newspaper Men
Publishers' Association Will Meet At Long Beach in January
Five hundred newspaper publishers of California will gather for their annual convention at Long Beach in January. It was decided at a meeting of the state executive committee and governing boards of the California News-Paper Publishers Association, just held at Atascadero.
The committee adopted a policy of holding the annual meeting of publishers not in the same section of the state in two successive years. The convention in January, 1929, was held at Sacramento.
"California—Advertising Minded" is the theme selected by the executive committee for the 1930 convention, at which time the newspaper publishers of the state get together to discuss mutual problems and ways and means of promoting statewide unity.
Among the major topics planned for the 1930 meeting, according to John B. Long, executive secretary, will be a circulation audit for weekly and the smaller daily newspapers, codification of the publication laws of the state, and establishment of a clipping service.
The Gazette is a member of the California Newspaper Publishers Association and will be represented at the annual convention by Henry Kuchel, its publisher.
Those who attended the executive committee meeting at Atascadero were: resident Justus F. Craemer, Orange daily News; H. R. Juanan, Santa Cruz News; Ford Chatters, Lindsay Gazette; carroll H. Smith, La esa Scout; Harve L. Ling, Burbank Review; J. Sherman McDowell, Alameda Times-Star; George M. Morell, Palo Alto Times; O. M. Canon, Santa Maria Times; Paul Moore, eddies facts; Thad N. Killing Deer Out of Season
Joe Hayden Receives Severe Sentence; Goes to all
Sometimes they get away with it for a long time, but when they are hooked they are really hooked. At least that's how it looked to Joe D. Hayden of San Diego a few days ago when he was committed to the county jail for 116½ days by Judge Arthur Mundo for hunting, killing, and possession of deer meat out of season.
This came about due to the hard work of Fish and Game Deputies Ed Glidden and Webb Toms, who worked on a tip that Hayden had been hunting about the middle of June, six weeks before the deer season opened. Hayden was a caretaker at the Eagle's Nest adjoining the Los Coyotes Indian reservation, Glidden and Toms investigated, had some subpoenas issued and gathered up a formidable array of witnesses who knew Hayden had killed the deer.
Taken into court the offender entered a plea of not guilty and demanded a jury trial. The trial was held on September 5th. The jury listened to the testimony and found Hayden guilty but recommended leniency. The judge withheld sentence and in the meantime information was discovered showing that Hayden had been convicted of a like offense on September 14th, 1927, and had been sentenced to a jail term. It was also disclosed that he had been convicted in July, 1928, for a violation of the Angling and Hunting License Act. Despite the fact that the defendant was ably represented by counsel, his case looked bad enough for Judge Mundo to assess a fine of $350 or the alternative of 116½ days in jail. Not paying the fine, Hayden went to jail.

TURKEY TALK
An excellent plan for fattening turkeys for November 28 next is to begin around the first of October to feed night and morning. Give just enough at first, so the birds are left a little hungry, and gradually increase the quantity until a week before killing time when they should be getting all they will eat three times a day. Some turkey raisers feed equal parts of wheat and oats during the first part of the fattening season, gradually changing to corn as the weather gets cooler. A grain ration of oats, wheat, and corn is probably the best. Old corn is much better than new, but it must be free from mustiness. Chestnuts, beechnuts, and acorns are also good fattening feeds. Confinning free-range-reared turkeys during fattening has been tried, but with little success, as the birds lose their appetite and lose weight. However, turkeys that have been raised in semi-confinement may be fattened in confinement with good results.
It's true that men wear more clothing than women, and when we see the average man in a bathing suit we are glad it's true.
20 pounds to 1,000 square feet. The bone meal helps the grass to make enough growth to get through the first winter in good condition. The seed should be sown evenly and covered uniformly but lightly. Light rolling after covering is often beneficial.
