THE TOWN DOCTOR (The Doctor of Towns) SAYS Know Your Atmosphere Two men were driving a beautiful, winding roadway through a rolling wooded country, when rounding a curve they suddenly came upon a number of cars at a standstill. There was no accident, there was no police officer, but no barrier of stout est iron or electrified steel, no highway's "Road Closed" or "Bridge Out" could have been more effective; cars east-bound and "westward ho" stand still as if cement-bound to the pavement, for a mother Seganku had chosen this arterial highway for an ostentacious promenade of her progeny. That mother polecat and a lot of little polecats were going places, and in their going, behemoths of gasoline driven iron and steel—brothers in creation of odoriferous atmosphere whose path she crossed, became as statues. With glance neither to right nor left she led her little family across the highway, while a score or more of earthly dwellers looked on with awe and apprehension, and marveled at her boldness, nerve and determination. There is no doubt but that many of her kind had ventured to cross that road but faltered after starting and had therefore been annihilated; others had looked across the highway and wished they were on the other side; others had peered out at the whizzing automobiles and turned back with fear and trembling in their hearts, and many more were content to stay where they were. But this little "kitty" knew the power of her atmosphere, decided to get somewhere, made known her intentions, started, kept on going, and got to where she was going—to the other side of the road. The moral to communities is this: Recognize the power of YOUR atmosphere (concerted effort—pulling together) decide on what kind of a community you would like yours to be, then start, individually and collectively thinking and DOING those things that will make it such—looking neither to the right nor left until you "get where you are going to." And remember, that the town that says, "It can't be done" will lose its trade to the town that does it. Copyright, 1929, A. D. Stone. Reproduction prohibited in whole or in part. It is expected that the attendance will be about 150. An expert cook is being engaged and meals will be served in the special mess hall. The boys will be quartered in tents filled high with fresh straw. Each morning there will be an inspection and occupants of the tent in the poorest order awarded the yellow flag. A full schedule is being prepared so that there will be something, and usually several things, dbing every minute from reverie to taps. The members will arrive in camp on the afternoon of Sunday, June 30, be assigned to quarters and get settled in time for dinner. After dinner the 4-H campfire ceremony, written by Woodbridge Metcalf, extension forester of the University of California, will be the feature of the evening and the beginning of the camp program, which will stress the various phases of 4-H activities and work towards a unified "esprit de corps" for the betterment of the work. Foresters, botanists, geologists and other scientists will be present at the camp and accompany groups on field excursions. In addition to mountain climbing, swimming, track or field events and baseball will be featured, and the two county champions determined in each sport. On the afternoon of the Fourth of July each group will put on a patriotic stunt for parents and visitors that attend, after which the camp will disband and the members return home. “INSIDE” INFORMATION The new leaflet No. 42, Good Food Habits for Children, is needed by every mother with young children. It may be obtained while the supply lasts by writing to the U.S. Department of Agriculture at Washington, D.C. WAHLBERG Farm Advisor Examination of many groves through out Orange county reveals that there is much need for improved practice in the control of scaly bark disease. Scaly bark, although slow acting, is very persistent and will sooner or later reduce the vitality of the orange tree if not treated in time. The treatment of this bark disease is quite simple, but must be done thoroughly and followed up regularly for new outbreaks. At least annual inspections should be made of each tree after they are six years old to find outbreaks in the early stages. This is an important phase in the control program. Too often we find the disease has been allowed to progress to a point where it is very difficult to check and the cost of treatment is greatly increased. A stitch in time saves nine. Thorough scraping with special scraping tools over the diseased area plus an eight-inch area surrounding the disease is the normal treatment. The use of a disinfectant, such as permanganate of potash, one teaspoonful to a pint of water, is recommended. The failure of muche control work done by the grower or his hired man is due to lax scraping methods. Two demonstrations were scheduled by the Agricultural Extension Service on Wednesday of this week to show the best method of scraping and disinfection. Poisoning for small-control in clitrus trees will also be demonstrated at the same meetings. The demonstrations were held yesterday, the first at Tustin at 10 a.m., and the second at Anaheim in the afternoon. The demonstration here was held at George Allen's grove, corner East and Santa Anat streets. FEMININE ACTIVITIES One by one the shackles man has kept upon women throughout the ages are fallin' goff. Founded originally in physical superiority, when strength and fighting power were the standard of judgment and value, the domination of the male has lasted a long time in human history. It was inevitable that such dominance should receive religious indorsement, against which it has been harder to prevail than against mere custom and legal enactment. So it is but natural that religious equality for women should tarry behind political equality. Religious conceptions are the most conservative of all that man holds. For a number of earys there has been growing a sentiment to release women from the position of complete subordination in the affairs of the various Protestant denominations. Four years ago the Methodists removed the ban upon their official participation in church affairs enough to permit women evangelists and preachers to work but not to hold pastor's Now. Bake in a moderate oven (350 degrees F.) until the tomato skins are slightly wrinkled. A good all-in-one hot weather costume for a little girl can be made by buttoning a short pleated skirt around a plain romper. No underwear need then be worn, as the dress serves the double purpose of panties and outside garment. The little skirt may be plain in color, matching the binding or other trimming on the romper. A pattern with short sleeves of the 'kimona or raglan type should be chosen for the romper. Cedar chests that are in good condition and made entirely of properly dried 8-inch red-cedar heartwood can be depended upon to protect clothing stored in them, provided all the one-half to full-grown larvae are removed before storing, by thorough brushing, sunning, fumigation, or dry cleaning. Young larvae present at the time of storing, or that hatch from eggs on the clothing after being stored, will be quickly killed in a good cedar chest. In sealing jelly with parafin, put the parafin into a small saucepan and melt it over low heat. After the jelly has cooled and set, pour hot parafin over each glassful of jelly. See that it completely covers the top. Tilt the glass so that the parafin will run up on the sides of the glass lightly. This makes a perfect seal around the edge. After the parafin cools cover the glasses with tin tops or paper pasted over them, label and store it na cool, dry place. For a number of carys there has been growing a sentiment to release women from the position of complete subordination in the affairs of the various Protestant denominations. Four years ago the Methodists removed the ban upon their official participation in church affairs enough to permit women evangelists and preachers to speak, but not to hold pastorates. Now the Presbyterians of the northern branch are considering the opening of the door to them completely. The general assembly in session recently in St. Paul handed down three proposals to the presbyteries: Permitting women to be ordained as ministers, to serve as elders, and to be licensed as evangelists. Apparently all that is held back is the position of trustee, a purely legal matter not touching the religious life of the church. If a majority of the presbyteries vote approval before the meeting of the general assembly next June, the latter body will declare the proposals adopted and in effect. Many men church members gravely shake their heads and predict religious disruption if women are to be given such power in church life, but that has been the attitude of conservatives over every advance women have made throughout the centuries. And because conservatism in religion is so much stronger than in civil and social matters, success of these proposals can not be predicted with confidence. We may still see the women supplying three-fourths of the attendance and four-fifths of the work of the church, without having legal power to help shape its religious life for some years to come. THE GOOD OLD FLAPPER These peaky research gents are always dispelling the glamor that lingers about olden times. One of the latest of the species publishes an order issued by King Henry VIII in 1552, providing sustenance for a young gentlewoman of his court. It reads: "We will command you to allow more custom and legal enactment. So it is but natural that religious equality for women should tarry behind political equality. Religious conceptions are the most conservative of all that man holds.
