Utility of Power Vital in Progress
R. H. Ballard Tells What It Does For California
A recent news item heralds the fact that street lights in Boston have been lighted experimentally by electric current from Chicago, 1000 miles away. Eastern engineers are to be congratulated on this achievement. At the same time, as a patriotic westerner, I cannot refrain from the comment that we have a complete electrical connection from Billings, Mont., to San Diego and Yuma—a distance of 2200 miles. For many years we have had interconnected lines as long as the one just completed in the east, writes R. H. Ballard, general manager of the Southern California Edison Company.
Confronted by problems entirely different from those in other parts of the world, western engineers have had to develop new methods, some of them daring in their conception. The first three-phase hydro-electric plant in the world was built on Mill creek, near Redlands, in 1893, and is still contributing its quota of power to Southern California. The first 30,000-volt line was installed in this section, to be followed by the first 60,000-volt, 150,000-volt and 220,000-volt lines.
California companies were the first to supply electricity to farms, the first to balance water power with steam power and the first to invite customers to become partners in the business.
It is difficult to show what extent electricity has been responsible for California's present prosperity. To me there is something significant in the fact that we began to change from a tourist's paradise to a manufacturing and industrial center from the day that linemen building the network of wires that is now so familiar to us all. This must be more than a coincidence.
Our All-Year Club invites the whole world to come here and enjoy our climate, sports and scenery, knowing full well that when the visitors arrive they cannot escape noticing that Southern California is a very busy place, manufacturing goods of every variety citizen should have a general knowledge of this subject so that he can discuss it intelligently.
He should know that we not only have valuable water-power plants, but that we also have, at Long Beach, the largest steam plant in the west and one of the most efficient in the world. He should know that practically all the power plants on the coast and running back into Idaho, Montana, Utah and Nevada and interconnected so that each may be operated in the most economical fashion. It is this interconnection that enables us to advertise "reliable and abundant power at low rates."
California's total developed capacity for generating electricity is now 2,800,000 horsepower. During 1927 there will be added 153,000 horsepower, and by 1930 the total probably will be 4,000,000 horsepower. It is estimated that in 1927 the Edison company will generate two and a half billion kilowatt-hours or more than the output of the entire United States in 1905, only 22 years ago.
In this state there are now 32,863 miles of electric transmission lines, which are high voltage power arteries. New York has but 17,567 miles and Pennsylvania 9101 miles of such lines.
Armed with facts such as these, we can convince visitors that this is truly an industrial area, offering to the manufacturer considering a western location a wonderful climate, excellent transportation facilities, a harbor in touch with the whole world, fine housing conditions—all this we can tell him and let us add this one more important factor: Reliable and abundant power at low rates.
Electric rates are somewhat complicated and it is difficult to make direct comparison, but we can always make the simple statement that the cost of electricity in Southern California is reasonable. We have the word of one man high in our nation's affairs that "Nowhere is electricity so cheap as in California."
