Knights of Columbus Given Third Degree
Forty Candidates Initiated With Impressive Ceremony
Exemplification of the second and third degrees of the work of the Knights of Columbus for the fifteenth district, comprising Orange county, was held Sunday in the Knights of Columbus hall, Anaheim, in charge of the Anaheim and Santa Ana councils, with the district deputy, George F. Nash, of Santa Ana, presiding.
The Whittier council officers, Walter Volkmor, Joseph Cody, Walter Adams and S. B. Schmliter, put on the second degree, while Supreme Director Judge Thomas P. White, of Los Angeles; P. J. Cooney, deputy for the eighteenth district, and John J. Jones, state deputy from San Jose, conducted the impressive ceremonies of the third and major degree. Forty candidates from various points in the county, including several priests, were initiated in the degrees.
The orchestra of the Orange County Booster Club, in charge of E. C. D. Pettit, added much to the pleasure of the occasion with its lively music.
Following the ceremonies, a banquet was served in St. Boniface hall by the Altar Society women of St. Boniface church, 200 knights, clergy and honored guests, including wives and friends of the members, being seated at the long tables.
The "Casey" orchestra provided the music and at the community sing E. C. D. Pettit proved an excellent welder of the baton.
Edward Delgado was the vocalist for the evening and received an ovation with the torader song from the opera "Carmen," and "Sylvia," by Oley Speaks. Ish. His teacher, Madame Manuela V. His encore was "La Paloma," in Span-Eudrow, was his accompanist.
Clyde Ashen, grand knight of Santa Ana council No. 1842, introduced the toastmaster of the evening, George F. Nash.
Among the honored guests were acting Mayor Louis E. Miller, of Anaheim, who expressed a hearty welcome to the knights, his appreciation of the invitation to the banquet and the spirit manifested by the visitors of the mother colony. George W. Reid, secretary of the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce,
Franciscans and John Steven McGroarty, who wrote the Mission play, and urged a large attendance of Knights of Columbus and their families on the night of March 11. Reservations may be made with the grand knights of the councils.
Supreme Director Thomas P. White was the principal speaker of the evening and was given an ovation when introduced.
He said that the problems being grappled with today are law enforcement and crime, and that the Knights of Columbus aimed to be as a strong right arm in aiding officers of the law, as law observance is the solution of the problem more than law enforcement.
President Coolidge, in his inaugural address, said that the government would conquer not by the sword but by the cross, said the speaker, and if people would keep the ten commandments there would be no necessity of having $3,000,000 laws on the statute books.
The commandment most necessary for law observance, continued White, is the fifth, "Honor thy father and thy mother," which would bring about discipline in the home.
The program concluded with the singing of "The Star Spangled Banner."
American Legion Adds New Members
At the regular meeting of the American Legion post No. 72 Tuesday night, in their clubrooms in the city hall Byron B. Barton, Glen A. Peck and Howard E. Pratt were initiated and became members of the Legion.
In accordance with their pledge to mutual helpfulness, the members voted to send financial aid to the comrades confined in the veterans' hospital at San Fernando, and for whom the war is not yet over. Several who had visited this hospital found that in spite of certain care being given by the veterans' bureau of the government, the men were in actual want as far as many of their needs were concerned.
As usual, the entertainment committee had an enjoyable program furnished by the Misses La Belle Cheatum, Charlyn Tedrick, Peggy Paige and Hatfield, consisting of vocal numbers, interpretative dancing and readings. Refreshments were served by the commissary.

Almost one-fourth of a banana is starch and sugar. In addition, a banana contains a small amount of protein, a trace of fat, and a small percentage of mineral matter. When buying bananas be sure the stem end is left on, thus making it a sealed package.
The president of Albania is to wed a rich American, according to press reports. That is one way, of course, to retire the national debt.
Prunes are important sources of sugar and minerals, particularly iron.

Big Banking House Now Nationalized
Bank of Italy National Trust and Savings Association
Nationalization of the Bank of Italy, and the conversion of its statewide system of branches into Bank of Italy, National Trust and Savings Association, has been formally approved by the comptroller of the currency, and the federal reserve board, it was announced today by James A. Bacigalupl, president of the institution.
The entire organization will be merged immediately into the national system, and all of the branch offices will open for business under the new designation.
"Nationalization of the Bank of Italy, under the provisions of the McFadden act, is the concluding step in the perfection of our statewide service," said Bacigalupl.
"Nationalization not only means continuing operation within the federal reserve system, but also insures for the institution the full benefit of the modernized powers conferred upon national banks. For a considerable period the Bank of Italy has held an important role in the finances of the nation and the world, and also as the largest member of the federal reserve system in the twelfth district. The time has now come when the bank should assume the responsibility that attends the national prominence to which it has risen, and we believe the most direct way in which to do this is through pursuing our present course."
In addition, it is obvious that California is certain to gain in prestige by possessing the second largest national bank in America in the ranking published by Financial Age of New York; and as ardent Californians, we can scarcely be unmindful of whatever may redound to the benefit of the state in which the institution was cruded, and in which it has experienced such prosperity.
The Bank of Italy is credited with the second largest holdings of government bonds in the United States, ranking next to the First National Bank of New York.
TRI-COUNTY WEALTH
It is quite natural that the great wealth of Los Angeles should over-increase stream from the east to the three counties. The peak will be reached early this summer. It is the largest sum for which the citrus fruit crop of the three counties has ever been sold.
A careful survey of the crop situation shows San Bernardino and Orange counties will ship between 13,000 and 14,000 cars of citrus fruit this season. Riverside county will ship about 8400 cars. The returns in money to San Bernardino and Orange counties will approximate $17,000,000 for each county, with $10,000,000 for Riverside county.
And while the citrus fruit industry is the most important industry in the three counties, it is not by any means the only industry. Each of the three counties has vast resources of wealth in addition to that which the citrus fruit crop brings.
Court Delays Trial Of Accused Motorist
A week's delay was granted to Dennis Weaver, of Garden Grove, in which to save himself from threatened action by the court to place him in state's prison as a parole violator.
Former United States District Attorney Joe C. Burke, who appeared in Superior Judge Homer G. Ames' court as counsel for Weaver, succeeded in obtaining postponement of Weaver's hearing on the charge of breaking probation rules. The hearing was continued to next Saturday, at 10 a.m.
Arrested last Monday, near Los Alamitos, Weaver is accused of violating prosecution granted him in 1922, after his conviction of a grand larceny charge. Monday night, it was claimed, he was driving his car while under the influence of liquor and resisted an officer who apprehended him.
Both latter charges now are pending in Justice Kenneth E. Morrison's court. Weaver was arraigned last Tuesday on the charge of resisting an officer and posted $2000 ball for his release. Later he posted $5000 ball in connection with the parole violation charge. His arraignment on the charge of driving while under the influence of liquor was continued to March 7.

TRI-COUNTY WEALTH
It is quite natural that the great wealth of Los Angeles should overshadow other communities in discussion of Southern California, but other counties of the Southland should never tire in their work of maintaining their own identity. Otherwise, we would soon be lost entirely within the shadows of Los Angeles.
Here is an item of the wealth of a very important portion of Southern California that needs dissemination: the citrus fruit crop of the counties of San Bernardino, Riverside and Orange counties now being harvested will not approximately $45,000,000. Very little of that money has as yet been received by the growers, but within a very few weeks it will be pouring in an ever-
TOADSTOOL POISONING
Claude Beckett of Santa Ana is in a critical condition in the Santa Ana Valley hospital, where he is confined with an acute case of "toadstool" poisoning, suffered after he ate what he thought were mushrooms Sunday night.
Beckett was taken to the hospital on Monday, and his condition has been critical since that time. He has lost consciousness, but attendants declared that a slight improvement in his condition is noted.
Attempts made to determine where he obtained the toadstools have been unavailing. Attending physicians say that few persons ever recover from such poisoning.
A number of citizens of Anaheim have been enjoying mushrooms since the recent rain. Great care should be exercised in their selection.
