OBSERVATIONS BY A CONTRIBUTOR A TENDERFOOT LAMENT A well-known resident of this city motored to British Columbia a few weeks ago on a pleasure visit, but he allows the fun was knocked out of the trip by the peaky mosquitoes that thrive there. They can spot a stranger the length of a city block, he says, and lose no time in getting in their work. They sting early and late and sing in a high falsetto voice so as to cause a continual disturbance of one's slumbers. They are small in size, but make up for their diminutive stature by carrying great penetrating powers, and are so numerous that when one is killed a half dozen come to the funeral. The germ carriers keep a fellow on the jump, but that wouldn't be so bad if a guy escaped an attack of malaria. The man who related this experience says he finally got back home, but had to go to bed and having the fever and ague, he said he shook so fast as to knock all the bedding onto the floor. He is all right again now and says otherwise he had a delightful trip. NICE ORDER The Culver City Boot and Shoe Manufacturing Company has been notified from Washington, that it has been awarded the contract to make shoes and special leather appliances for World War disabled veterans interned in tract not only covers the rehabilitation Southern California hospitals. This conceeds of government hospitals in Sawtelle but all other communities as far south as San Diego. As a result of winning this order the Culver City factory is to be enlarged and in the expansion, the Culver City Board of Trade is assisting, the organization having also been instrumental in attracting the government's attention to the products of the hub-city factory. No reason in the world why this could not be duplicated right here in Anaheim. Think it over, Mr. Citizen, and the saying goes, get busy. HORSE ON HIM There awhile back a village constable support of our progressive citizens. A hundred foot boulevard connecting Anaheim with the southwest territory would be of tremendous benefit to this city. Nothing can enhance the progress of any locality more than paved highways, and the people of Anaheim would do well to help put this new boulevard on the map. PUTTING SHOULDERS TO WHEEL It is encouraging to know that Anaheim will enter the Tournament of Roses to be held at Pasadena next month. The beautiful float used in the Armistice Day parade here will be reconstructed and made into a fountain of flowers. The Art Department of the high school is going to make this creation. It is needless to say that much favorable comment for Anaheim will be derived by this endeavor upon the part of our high school pupils, who are really the builders of the future. Anaheim and its environs are beauty spots of Orange county, and our participation in the tournament of roses will redound greatly to our credit and further advancement. HIGHWAY NOTES Motor vehicle registrations for the year 1925 and the State Highway Commission's income from gasoline tax funds are below any predictions made during the recent legislative session. They even fall slightly below the estimates of the Highway Investigating committee. This announcement is made by State Highway Engineer R. M. Morton. The annual program of the State Highway Commission must be based on predictions of the amount to be received; therefore, the highway department closely studies all the returns. Reviewing the situation as developed by the apportionments made by the state controller and the Motor Vehicle Department, Mr. Morton today issued the following statement: "During the session of the legislature last spring numerous conflicting predictions were made as to the amount of money that would be available under present statutes for the maintenance and reconstruction of state highways. The money for this work is supplied by motor vehicle registration fees and gasoline tax funds, one half of the net returns of which are apportioned to the California Highway Commission." As a result of winning this order the Culver City factory is to be enlarged and in the expansion, the Culver City Board of Trade is assisting, the organization having also been instrumental in attracting the government's attention to the products of the hub-city factory. No reason in the world why this could not be duplicated right here in Anaheim. Think it over, Mr. Citizen, and the saying goes, get busy. HORSE ON HIM There awhile back a village constable attached a horse on a judgment, he acting as keeper of the animal. The case dragged along, and the horse was literally eating its head off. The expense bill against the equine grew to such proportions that it amounted to more than the horse was worth. Nobody would take animal for the hay bill that piled up. Finally the constable put the animal in pasture and one day it went estray. It wandered back to its old-home town and got bumped off by a Ford when it escaped to cross an intersection at excess speed and cutting a button when making a left-hand turn. It also was shown that it had no operator's license, no registration certificate and had not applied for the now 1926 license plate; and when the constable sued for damages the case was dismissed, bl-gosh. LITTLE BIRD WHISPERS A well-known Placentia avenue caterer and bon vivant has purchased a brand now coupe, and the little elf says cozy quiet drives in the moonlight are in evidence. There is room for two and it is said both seats are usually taken when these joyful jaunts are had while the pale moon sheds its shimmering rays athwart the shaded lanes where lovers are wont to congregate; and the dulcet conversations are said to be likened to the cooling of a couple of turtle doves. The owner of the new car "spruces" up more tidily than has been his custom and his domicile shows signs of neat renovation. An air of mystery now permeates the humble surroundings. The good book says it is not intended for one to live alone, and close-up cronies allow that as the autumn leaves begin to fall a visit of two fond hearts to the office where marriage licenses are issued is a Dan Cupid possi- DEELICIOUS FRUIT Cherimoya is a new fruit raised here, and its flavor is delicious. The fruit resembles a large sized pear and is of a dark green color. The other skin or rind is similar to the avocado. A gentleman here has raised a tree from the seed planted eight years ago. The tree heretofore had bloom each year, but no fruit came until this season when about a dozen large sized pears have ripened. The fruit has a sort of banana-melon flavor, the meat being white and of the texture of the banana. People who had the rare pleasure of tasting the fruk state that it is really the finest fruit ever eaten. The Cherimoya has black seeds the size of large beans and one of the men who got a helping took them home for planting. The money for this work is supplied by motor vehicle registration fees and gasoline tax funds, one half of the net returns of which are apportioned to the California Highway Commission. All apportionments for the year 1925 have now been made, and a comparison of the actual returns with estimates of a year ago is possible. The Highway Commission has received at its share of the gasoline tax fund during 1925 the sum of $6,868 945.-94. The Highway Investigating Committee estimated that the income this year from this source would be $7,100.-000. Estimates of the oil companies and others were much higher. The Highway Investigating Committee estimated an increase of 17.11 per cent over the 1924 gasoline tax returns. The actual increase was 13.29 per cent. The situation regarding vehicle license fees is as follows: The total registration for 1924 was 1,350,429. The Highway Investigating Committee estimated that this number would be increased to 1,450,000 by the end of 1925. Other estimators placed the 1925 registration as high as 1,580.-000 vehicles. There still remain a few weeks of the year 1925, but the Motor Vehicle Department announces that the 1925 registration, based on eleven months, on account of the changing of the registration year to end December 31st, will be about 1,480,000 vehicles, an increase of only 9.6 per cent over 1924." People who had the rare pleasure of tasting the fruk state that it is really the finest fruit ever eaten. "You must go away and come back to really appreciate the advancement made in this section," said a lady who was traveling through Anaheim a few days ago. "The improvements here are very substantial in your business section and your orange groves laden with golden fruit are beautiful. Residents here do not know, really, how well off they are, and your climate is just fine." FOND MEMORIES "Now I find pennies where six and seven years ago I picked up dollars," remarked the street sweeper the other morning, as he knocked the dust from his broom. "The other morning I picked up two quarters and a dime within a short space, but pickings are scarce compared to former days. I have found pocket books, rings, gloves, watches, silk hoslery and vanity bags, but the strangest find of all was one morning about 5 o'clock I found a baby about four years old toddling up street. I inquired around and soon located the mother who became overjoyed at finding her little darling. Yes," remarked the street sweeper, as he adjusted another chaw of tobacco, "Them were the happy days." A NEW FEEDER Without doubt paved highways has been an important factor in the upbuilding of California, especially in sections apart from the busy marts of trade. The Manchester Road from Playa Del Rey, southwest of Anaheim, as contemplated, to connect with the State Highway, is a project that should receive the hearty RED LETTER DAYS By A. B. Live view of the amount of increase. He for one million dollars for the protection The Highway Investigating Committee, in its report to the governor, estimated an increase of 10.34 per cent. No further apportionment of fees will be made during the present calendar year. The total estimated to be received by the Highway Commission from the Motor Vehicle Fund from 1925 registrations is $3,419,525. This is an increase in the state's share over 1924 of $339,-866.18, or 11.04 per cent. The actual increase is considerably under all estimates made last year and indicates that the former rapid increase in Motor Vehicle registration in California is slowing down. "The special transportation tax on truck and stage lines, the estimated return from which was placed by some at $600,000 annually, is tied up int court litigation and has provided no income. "It is predicted by the Motor Vehicle license fees will be reduced by $500,000 gross, as a result of the lowering of registration fees on Ford cars with cargo bodies. This will mean that, in 1926, the highway department's income from Department that the 1926 income from Motor Vehicle registrations will probably not exceed the 1925 income. "Although the gasoline tax and motor vehicle registration fees will increase, the highway engineer takes a conserva- live view of the amount of increase. He believes that no better estimates are available, as a guide to future revenues, than those made by the Highway Investigating Committee in its report on the state highway situation, filed with the governor in February, 1925. "These estimates were, last spring, declared to be ridiculously low by those opposed to increased revenue for highways, but the amounts realized in 1925 for state highway maintenance and reconstruction are even less than the most conservative estimates available at that time." Asks Million Dollars From Government Francis Cuttle, president of the Water Conservation Association, has received a wire from H. S. Ryerson, who is now in Washington, to the effect that the bill for one million dollars for the protection of watershed covers in Southern California has been introduced by Senator Shortridge. It is known as Senate Bill 774. Mr. Ryerson advises that it is not likely that the bill will be up for hearing until sometime after Christmas and that those with whom he has conferred in Washington seem to feel that there is good prospect for getting satisfactory action on the bill. It behooves the people of Southern California to protect their watershed cover and by that means insure a more uniform flow of water from these watersheds, to do everything in their power to secure the passage of this bill. Don't forget the number. Senate Bill 774. Miami recently had a rain which flooded the whole town. Will California papers please copy? Clementine St. New Town Born In Orange County Ole Hanson Building Spanish Village Near Capistrano One of the outstanding development enterprises in Orange County is that of Ole Hanson, former famous mayor of Seattle, on the San Diego highway six miles south of San Juan Capistrano. At this point Hanson has laid out a townsite of 2000 acres and named it San Clemente. He has given San Clemente the second name of "The Spanish Village" and is requiring that every structure on the property must be of Spanish design. Shacks and the haphazard beach structures, which have made eye-sores of other promising beach developments of the past, have been forever barred at San Clemente under the terms of lot purchases. Spanish type buildings only, whether they be large costly structures or small one-room week-end houses, must be Spanish. The large restaurant and administration building, which C. C. C. Tatum, president of the Los Angeles Realty board, is to build will be Spanish. So also, will be the clubhouse, the garage, store buildings and hotels, which are to follow. The "Mouth of the Beach" is located on the first unit of the new townsite, where Avenida Del Mar, first thoroughfare, reaches the ocean, slightly more than one-half mile from its starting place at the junction with the state highway. The first unit comprises approximately 200 acres, which already has been prepared for building. Development plans call for the construction of a large and beautiful clubhouse, the creation of artistic grounds about it and the deeding of the club and 1000 feet of beach frontage to the property owners. In addition there will be built a children's playground, tennis courts, hand ball courts and lengthy bridge trails. Swimming from the wide, sandy beach out into the shallow surf, declared to be without a vestige of undertow, will always be a major attraction. Still another feature will be the fishing barge, anchored off San Clemente beach long a much sought spot by surf fishing enthusiasts.
