WORLD'S GREATEST TUNNEL
IS NOW COMPLETED
Southern California Edison Company's Big Bore is Finished
Two hundred and fourteen million kilowatt hours of electricity for Southern California industries in 1925 is the contribution made with the completion of the 14-mile Florence Lake tunnel of the Southern California Edison Company. When all the streams tributary to Florence lake are harnessed, the annual output of Florence Lake tunnel will be increased to 1,250,000,000 kilowatt hours.
The firing of the last blast at 10:40 o'clock Tuesday morning marked the culmination of the greatest piece of Tunnel work in the world's history. In spite of great handicaps imposed by severe weather conditions and distance from operating headquarters, every world's record for underground work has been shattered during the progress of this job.
The tunnel is 69,669 feet long, took 1585 days to bore and cost $17,000,000. Original estimates indicated that the tunnel would be completed in December, 1925, but, by improved methods developed both by the men on the job and manufacturers of drilling equipment and explosives, work has progressed so rapidly that the estimated time of completion was beaten by 20 months.
Kaiser mountain, through which Florence Lake tunnel was driven, stands over 10,000 feet above sea level. Across Kaiser Pass, Jerry Dwyer and his famous Alaskan dog team have traveled during the winter months, carrying mail, emergency supplies, and moving picture films to the workmen in the upper camps.
coming from men and women in all walks of life. These properties are built with the assurance that the new population to use this service will continue to travel our way. Over 35,000 employees are engaged in this service in California.
"The manufacturer, farmer or home owner who contemplates moving to California, we can say that an abundant supply of electricity for every need will be available when he arrives. Rates are low. Herbert Hoover is authority for the statement that nowhere else is electricity so cheap as in California.
"These low rates are partially due to the use of waterpower, the highly efficient steam plants and particularly to the great diversity of use which is characteristic of this section of the country."
CHARGE BROOKHART
WAS IN PARTY PLOT
The report of the Iowa Republican state central committee, charging that Senator Smith W. Brookhart obtained his election, November 4, by "deceit and fraud" will be formally filled with the United States Senate on organization of the new Senate, Chairman B. B. Burnquist of the Iowa central committee has announced.
Mr. Burnquist issued a statement in which he said he wished to clear up a prevailing impression that the committee was seeking to unseat Senator Brookhart because he failed to support President Coolidge in the recent campaign.
"That is not it at all," Mr. Burnquist's statement continued. "Our claim is this:
"That when Senator Brookhart announced himself as a candidate in the nation by the governors of four institutions where World War veiled to the use of narcotic treatment, according to risen of Lodi, chairmanship state welfare committees."
The veterans' bureauoping out plans for a second instruction to be given bert of New York City and staffs of the hostess that they may be quinteted with the treatment for morphine administration.
INTERSTATE
Two states are now in commemorating last link in the interstate which unites Southern Arizona. This is the beginning at the Colorado at Yuma and coming the famous sand hill.
With this paving, plank road completed assured first-class trails from Phoenix by Yuma and Imperial section of road will interstate highways at Yuma and cross there. They are the way, the Lee highway Spanish Trails. Free motor vehicles use and it is expected that most of the 65 miles ville and Yuma, which been the worst part increase the number daily.

Jerry tendered his resignation when the tunnel was holed through, for he held the opinion that his services would no longer be required and he wanted to go back prospecting. He was promptly informed that he might have a leave of absence, but that his services would be in demand for several winters more, as the permanent dam at Florence lake is yet to be built and other tunnels and dams are to be constructed in the south fork of the San Joaquin river.
Twenty-five thousand sacks of cement have been stored at the lower end of Florence Lake tunnel, awaiting completion. The electric cars which have been used for hauling muck will transport this cargo through the entire length of the tunnel for the construction of the Florence Lake dam. On the return trip they will carry salvage from the camps, and it is expected by the time the spring run-off starts in April this vast amount of freight in both directions will be disposed of.
All of the skilled miners will be needed in May, when another tunnel from Huntington lake to Shaver lake will be started. In the meantime they have been told that they will be kept on the payroll at their regular rating, and may put in their time on miscellaneous duties.
"A permanent construction army" is the term applied to his organization by George Clinton Ward, vice-president of the Southern California Edison Company, in charge of construction, under whose supervision the Florence Lake tunnel has been drilled. "Many of the men who went to Big Creek in December, 1911, when this vast power project was started, are still living there, and they hope to remain there until the last drop of water has been put to work for the Southland."
PROVIDING POWER
Forecasting the electric power re-engineering training com-munity has announced Mr.
"That when Senator Brookhart announced himself as a candidate in the Republican primary last June, he made an affidavit, as required by the Iowa law, that he was a Republican in good faith. We are prepared to prove that at the time this affidavit was made he was conspiring with others to bring about the formation of a third party, the object of which was to defeat both of the old parties."
AMERICAN LEGION NOTES
As the California members of the honorary committee headed by President Coolidge for the veterans' and child's welfare committee of the $5,000,000 American Legion endowment fund, Mrs. Alma de Bretteville Spreckels of San Francisco and William Gibbs MsAdoo, former secretary of the treasury, of Los Angeles, have been named by State Commander Nathan F. Coombs.
Mrs. Spreckels, widow of the late A. B. Spreckels, San Francisco millionaire, and donor with her husband of the Legion of Honor war memorial in this city, and former Secretary McAdoo were named because of their interest in American Legion activities and because of their work for the ex-service men.
The $5,000,000 endowment fund now being raised throughout the nation is to be used for the rehabilitation of World War veterans and for child welfare work. Among those on the committee for which the two Californians were named are: Mrs. Coolidge, Vice-President Charles G. Dawes, Charles E. Hughes, Secretary of the Navy Wilbur Herbert Hoover, secretary of commerce; General Pershing and many others.
The state executive committee of the American Legion is to meet at Sacramento, February 28, to discuss pending legislation affecting the veterans which is now before the state legislature. The committee will also discuss plans for the next state convention of the Legion, to be held September 16 at Catalina and for the central committee has announced.

PROVIDING POWER
Forecasting the electric power requirements of a rapidly growing community is not a Sunday afternoon pastime, says R. H. Ballard, executive vice-president and general manager of the Southern California Edison Company, in an article in Southern California Business, the official magazine of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce.
"The electric power companies of California have backed up their faith in this state with a cash investment of $600,000,000 to build electric generating stations, substations, transmission and distributing lines. These companies now have an installed generating capacity of 2,044,000 horsepower. Of this, 1,330,000 horsepower is in water power plants and 714,000 horsepower in steam plants.
"In 1917 the capacity of all the plants in California was 1,089,000 horsepower, and engineers estimate that in 1930 it will be over 4,000,000 horsepower.
"Since the armistice the Southern California Edison Company alone has spent $143,000,000 on new power plants and transmission equipment, which includes the 1925 budget of $25,000,000, or over $2,000,000 per month. Most of this is spent with local industries or is disbursed through payrolls which soon reach local merchants.
"No one has greater faith in California than have the utility executives who are investing millions of dollars under whose supervision the Florence Lake tunnel has been drilled. "Many of the men who went to Big Creek in December, 1911, when this vast power project was started, are still living there, and they hope to remain there until the last drop of water has been put to work for the Southland."
The state executive committee of the American Legion is to meet at Sacramento, February 28, to discuss pending legislation affecting the veterans which is now before the state legislature. The committee will also discuss plans for the next state convention of the Legion, to be held September 15, at Catalina, and for the Omaha national convention in October.
Representatives from the various Legion districts will be heard by the committee.
California school children are to be invited to compete again in a national essay contest by the American Legion.
According to an announcement from James K. Fisk, state adjutant of the Legion, $1500 in scholarships in the various colleges and schools of the country has been set aside by the national headquarters of the organization for an essay contest on "Why Has the American Legion, an Organization of Veterans of the World War, Dedicated Itself, First of All," To Uphold and Defend the Constitution of the United States of America?"
The contest will end June 1, and students between the ages of 12 and 18 are eligible. Silver and bronze medals and certificates of merit will also be given the winners.
Superintendent of Public Instruction Will C. Wood and the various school superintendents have been asked to co-operate in the conduct of the essay contest.
More than 362,000 children participated in last year's American Legion essay contest.

nated by the government as one of the four institutions in the country where World War veterans addicted to the use of narcotics will be given treatment, according to Walter Garrison of Lodi, chairman of the Legion state welfare committee.
The veterans' bureau is now mapping out plans for a special course of instruction to be given by Dr. Lambert of New York City to physicians and staffs of the hospitals named, so that they may be thoroughly acquainted with the Townes-Lambert treatment for morphism and its administration.
INTERSTATE HIGHWAY
Two states are now joining hands in commemorating completion of the last link in the interstate highway which unites Southern California and Arizona. This is the section of road beginning at the Colorado river bridge by Yuma and coming west through the famous sand hills to Holtville.
With this paving, improving and plank road completed, motorists are assured first-class transportation facilities from Phoenix to San Diego by Yuma and Imperial Valley. This section of road will serve three great interstate highways which converge at Yuma and cross the Colorado river there. They are the Bankhead highway, the Lee highway and the Old Spanish Trails. From 300 to 500 motor vehicles use this road daily, and it is expected that the improvement of the 65 miles between Holtville and Yuma, which previously had been the worst part of the road, will increase the number of cars to 1000 daily.
Completion of this improved highway over the picturesque sand hills has been under promotion and con-
Deed for right-of-way, from Wilhelmina Boymann, et. al., in the Fifth road district was accepted and declared a public highway.
Map tract No. 739 was accepted as the official plotting of said tract. No street work.

Completion of this improved highway over the picturesque sand hills has been under promotion and construction for some 15 years. Back in 1913, C. E. McStay, field secretary for the Automobile Club of Southern California, made the first attempt to chart a road through this then bidding and sparsely settled region. It has been a long and tedious task, and to celebrate the consummation of this dream representatives of Southern California and Arizona will hold a joy fest at Yuma, Saturday, February 28, to which the governors of both states have been invited.
This great highway marks the completion of the first transcontinental route through Arizona to California. It will be open to travel every day in the year, and is said to have more days of sunshine for travelers than any other route.
Several officials of the Automobile Club of Southern California, the automobile editors of Los Angeles and San Diego papers, representatives of Imperial Valley publications, representatives of the state highway commission and good roads proponents from all sections of Southern California plan to participate in the celebration at Yuma. Completion of the road is being widely exploited throughout the East, as it is expected that 1925 will be a banner year for motor tourists coming to Southern California.
