SOCIALISM AND COMMUNISM
Arthur Brisbane writes that the endorsement of La Follette for the Presidency by the socialists is probably unfortunate for La Follette, because many people ignorantly confuse socialism with communism, atheism, free love and the like, with which socialism Mr. Brisbane declares, "has nothing to do."
Such a statement indicates that Mr. Brisbane has read little of the history or literature of socialism. The differences between socialism and communism are of degree and not of a kind. Socialism is the common ownership of land and capital and political management of all industry. Communism is the common ownership of property. There are 57 varieties of socialists and communists and their theories shade into one another until it is difficult to tell where one begins and the other ends.
The new deity of communist Russia is Karl Marx, the velled prophet of modern socialism. The name socialist is woven into the names of some of the federated "republics" of the bolshevist system. Most socialists have been and are atheists or agnostics. That tendency runs all the way from Marx to Deba. Robert Owen, the father of English socialism himself a man of conventional morals, inveighed against marriage, the church and private property as the three great evils of society. Most socialists have held both marriage and religion to be bulwarks of individualism and there-

WEISEL & CLARK,

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA SEND GREETINGS TO: THE ODD FELLOWS HALL BUILDING ASSOCIATION, also all other persons unknown, claiming any right title, estate, lien or interest in the real property described in the complaint adverse to plaintiffs' ownership or any cloud upon plaintiffs' title thereto. Deefndants.
YOU ARE HEREBC DIRECTED TO APPEAR and answer the Complaint in an action entitled as above, brought against you in the Superior Court of the County of Orange, State of California, within ten days after the service on you of this Summons, if served within this County, or within thirty days, if served elsewhere. And you are hereby notified that unless you appear and answer as above required the said plaintiffs will take judgement for any money or damages demanded in the complaint, as arising upon contract, or it will apply to the Court for any other relief demanded in the complaint.
That the object of said action is to determine the adverse claims to and clouds upon the title to the real property described in the plaintiffs' complaint herein, which said real property is situated in the City of Anaheim, County of Orange, State of California, and is described as follows:
Lot Fifteen (15), in Block "D", of the Subdivision of Vineyard Lot "D2", as shown on a map recorded in Book 34. Page 592, of Deeds, Records of Los Angeles County, California, except the Westerly 8 feet of said real property heretofore conveyed to the City of Anaheim for street purposes.
Said property is also particularly described as follows:
Beginning at the Southwesterly corner of said Lot 15, which said point of beginning is 26.25 feet Easterly and 27.75 feet Northerly from a cement monument marking
some of the federated "republics" of the bolshevist system. Most socialists have been and are atheists or agnostics. That tendency runs all the way from Marx to Debs. Robert Owen, the father of English socialism himself a man of conventional morals, invigilated against marriage, the church and private property as the three great evils of society. Most socialists have held both marriage and religion to be bulwarks of individualism and therefore obstacles to be removed.
The pretension of most socialist propagandists is that people who do not believe in socialism are either too wicked to accept it or too stupid to understand it. The people of this country are not so ignorant of what socialism means as Mr. Brisbane affects to believe. They know what socialist theories are and they know from the conduct of the present Russian autocracy what socialist practices are. Even socialists who happen to belong to a different breed than the kind in power are killed, banished jailed or silenced.
What the socialist sees in swollen state power is not a means of serving, but of dominating people; the socialist is an incipient autocrat, who usually having no other natural means of swaying others, wants despotic political power for that purpose.
Probably Mr. La Follette will not be hampered by socialist support. Socialists are at one with him in hating every kind of power and influence but that which is exercised through politics. They are with him in the idea of tearing the existing order down, but have one on him in possessing a plan for putting something in its place. The plan is to make every citizen a slave of the state but however poor the plan may be, it is at least a plan.
Silence may be golden, but what could a jazz orchestra do with it.

100,000 Prospective New Homes Swept Away
Secretary Mellon of the United States Treasury estimates that the people of the United States invested $500,000,000 in worthless stocks and securities in 1923.
It came from everywhere. That money was swindled out of people in every state, every county, every town and city. It didn't come from any particular region.
It was taken from the folks who needed HOMES, from farmers who needed BARNS, from unfortunates here, there and everywhere who were actually in need of many, many things in the line of shelter.
At $5000 each that money would have built 100,000 beautiful home would have provided shelter of an attractive character for half a million people.
Make up your mind that the best investment you can make for yourself and your family is in a HOME.
If you already have a Home you can help others get one by placing your surplus funds with the Building and Loan Association, at six per cent and you get your interest check regularly each quarter, without having to think of the details. They do the rest and HOMES.
