MINING ACTIVITY DURING PAST HALF YEAR INCREASED PRODUCTION IN ALL MINERALS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF GOLD GRAVEL OPERATIONS MORE VALUABLE THAT THE QUARTZ MINING OUTPUT While the general mineral industry of California has shown exceptional activity for the first six months of 1917, as compared with the conditions in the first half of 1916, gold mining has been suffering a period of depression, according to Charles G. Yale, of the United States geological survey. He reports that the United States mint at San Francisco, and local smelters and reginers, are in receipt of about the same quantity of gold and silver in the first five months of 1917, as in the corresponding period of 1916, proving that no advance in output has been made, notwithstanding the opening of new gold mines and reopening of old ones. This is almost entirely due to conditions in the deep gold mines of the state, and especially the more important producers in the five Mother Lode counties. Investigation has shown that thus far in 1917, the expenses of gold production have increased over 18 per cent above the costs in 1916, due to extra cost of labor and supplies, and increased taxation. The scarcity of skilled, and even unskilled labor, has compelled worked by Eastern men. There is considerable activity in the old camp of Mokelumne Hill, affecting the Safe Deposit,' Buffalo, Hector, Lucas, Maypole, Mokelumne and Esperanza mine. In El Dorado county the Church Union and several adjoining claims osuth of Placerville have been reopened after a long period of idleness. The Placerville Godl Mining company has acquired 23 claims in and about Placerville including the Pacific, and some ahve been unwatered for development work. In Mariposa, the famous Fremont grant or Mariposa Mining & Commercial company's property, has been sold this year to a company which is about to reopen the Princeton, Pine Tree and Josephine mines. On this tract of 44,000 acres they are 71 mines which have been more or less productive, but they have been idle for some years. The reopening of those properties will be of great importance to the county and the whole Mother Lode region, of which this is the southern end. The Mount Gaines near Hornitos, formerly a producer, but some years idle, is being put in shape for reopening; and the Mary Harrison, near Bagby, is also being habilitated. At the Red Bank a flotation plant has been installed. In Tuolumne county, the Eagle Shawmut mine, with its 100 stamp mill and extensive chlorination plant has been purchased by the Tonopah Belmont Mining company, and will be again made productive after a period of idleness. The main shaft of 2,200 feet in depth is being deepened to explore the main ore body. The Buchanan, between the main and south forks of the Tuolumne river is being reopened by a new company. In the Black Oak, at Soulsbyville, a wide vein of excellent ore has been discovered in the winze from the 1,800 foot level. In activity has been g years in California concrete impounding creek in Sierra cou ing the opening of new gold mines and reopening of old ones. The scarcity of skilled, and even unskilled labor, has compelled many mine owner to hang up part of their stamps for some months this year because they have been unable to extract the normal quantity of ore. Machine men, such as those who operate drills, have gone to munition plants and other factories where they obtain better wages than in the mines. Good timber men are particularly scarce, as are good miners. Other adjoining states have been and are offering higher wages than prevail in the California mines although wages have been raised in this state. Copper mines give a bonus based on value of the metal and that has also attracted men from the deep gold mines. The California debris commission has been vigorously enforcing its regulations as to control of debris or tailings from deep mines, as well as gravel properties. As a result many deep mines have had to construct retaining barriers or dams at considerable expense and delay to impound the tailings and prevent their passage into the streams which may carry them to the navigable rivers. All these things have combined to affect rather disastrously the gold mining industry, and especially at a time when gold itself has not the purchasing power it formerly had. For these reasons it is noted that, while California has always been famed for its gold mines, they are at present less prosperous than mines which produce other metals more or less in unusual demand under war conditions. During the first half of 1917 the producing mines in the Mother Lode counties of the state have been laboring under the difficulties mentioned, yet there have been certain activities worthy of notation. Both the Kennedy and Argonaut companies, the most productive operators in Jackson district of Amador county, have reached and slightly exceeded a vertical depth of 4,000 feet in tehir respective shafts, and both are at that depth, extracting exceptionally rich ore, which is a mining company, and will be again made productive after a period of idleness. Sinking and repairing the main shaft of the Dutch, at Quartz, has commenced. Deep mining outside the Mother Lode counties of the state shows some features worthy of note this year in a few sections. In Inyo county, there is much activity around Keeler and Darwin. The Cerro Gordo properties are producing large quantities of zinc. The Darwin Development company, after proving the efficiency of the flotation process on the Lane and Lucky Jim mines at Darwin, have purchased the old Defiance mine and the water rights at Coso. In and around Zabriskle, there is much activity especially in silver and lead ores. In Mono county the Masonic district has again displayed activity after several years of quiet. A new ore shoot of high grade gold and silver ore has been discovered in the Pittsburg Liberty mine, by leasers. The Serita company has enlarged its milling facilities and increased its water supply, for the electric power plant. In Nevada county the new mill on the Allison Ranch mine has been completed and unwatering the property is in progress. This was formerly a heavy producer but has been for some years idle. The North Star mines company, at Grass Valley, continues to produce heavily the richer ore coming from below the 600 foot (incline) level. This company has recently acquired the Rogers mine near Washington and started work upon it. More stamps have been added to the Golden Center mill at Grass valley. The Empire Mines Co. continues to operate the most productive deep gold mine enterprise in the state. The Valley View mine in Placer county has been sold to the H.C. Winters company of New York. Machinery has been ordered and an electric power mine is being constructed. Goldstone is a new district in San Bernardino county where developments are encouraging. The Goldstone Mining company has completed its new mill and the Belmont, Red Ridge, and other claims are being satisfactorily developed. In Sierra county work Gardella Dredging paring to build a new Clear creek, near a county, where it alterating successfully.(No. 3) is to be coated American Dredge co., Mokelumne river, near averas county. Both the Kennedy and Argonaut companies, the most productive operators in Jackson district of Amador county, have reached and slightly exceeded a vertical depth of 4,000 feet in tehir respective shafts, and both are at that depth, extracting exceptionally rich ore, which is a matter of great encouragement to other Mother Lode miners who have not reached such depths in their properties. Rehabilitation of the famous old Eureka (or Hetty Green) mine at Sutter creek, in the same district is proceeding rapidly, and retimbering the old workings, after unwatering, is nearly finished. A complete new electrical equipment has been placed in the mine. It is 40 years since this mine was previously worked, and it has been filled with water ever since. The depth of the main shaft is 2,063 feet. The shaft of the Hardenburg mine, in the same county has been unwatered and the properties reopened. This property has been twice abandoned but sufficient capital has now been supplied to carry on operations properly. The Lincoln Consolidated group, in the same district, comprising the Lincoln, Wildman-Mahoney, and otehr old once worked mines, is again being worked after years of idleness. The Oneida, idle for years, is also being rehabilitated; and the Kennedy company has purchased and is reopening the Zella at Jackson. In Calaveras county the indebtedness of the old Royal Consolidated mine at Hodson, has been paid off, and rehabilitation of the property, long idle, but formerly a producer, has commenced. The Drake group, including the Last Chance, south of Angels, is about to be unwatered and The Valley View mine in Placer county has been sold to the H. C. In Sierra county work has been resumed on a number of properties in the Downieville region. The Shamrock mine, adjoining the Sierra Buttes, at Sierra City, has been sold to San Francisco men and is being reopened. The Plumbago and Oriental mines of the Croesus Mining company are having more extensive development work done; and the shaft at the Marlposa mine, Alleghany, is to be deepened. In Siskiyou county, the Dewey or Squaw creek mine, after an idleness of eight years is again in operation, and an electric power plant has been provided. In the region around Happy Camp quite a number of gold and copper properties are receiving attention from Eastern people. The old Bonanza King mine, near Trinity Center, Trinity county, is again producing heavily. The gravel mining industry of California, including dredge and hydraulic operations, is much more prosperous than quartz mining, having few of the drawbacks mentioned as relating to deep mines. Some features of the latest style of dredge, put into operation this year by the Yuba Consolidated Goldfields in the Yuba county field are of interest. Its capacity is 350,000 cubic yards of auriferous gravel monthly, with an estimated working cost of 3½ cents per cubic yard. The dredge buckets hold 18 cubic feet each, and the machine will dig to a depth of 84 feet below the company has been substituted for the plant. More units to the flotation plant. Copper company, in In Plumas county, the railroad is now operated Engels copper mines. The Western Pacific Railway of the flotation plant been greatly increased. National Copper company shipsments of copper to ville to the Tooele sn United States Smelting company is increasing. This machine will move boulders weighing 4 tons and remove readily roots and trunks of trees embedded in the gravel. The dredge weighs 2,700 tons and cost upwards of half a million dollars. The machine has two tailings stackers, each 220 feet long, stacking one to each side so as to leave a channel 500 feet wide behind it. Another dredge will dig another 500 foot wide channel to comply with the requirements of the California Debris commission for a 1000 foot channel. Another dredge, of similar design but larger and to cost $600,000 has been started this year. In Trinity county early this year the Pacific Gold Dredging company started operations in the Carrville district. The buckets of the dredge are of 9 cubic feet capacity, and the machine digs 60 feet below water line. Later, arrangements were made to move the dredge four miles down Coffee creek where better ground has been discovered. The Trinity Star Dredging company is building a wooden dredge on the Trinity river on the Paulsen ranch near Lewiston. The Trinity Gold Dredging company, owning the old Alte Bert dredge has contracted for a second one with 82 buckets of 18 cubic feet capacity each. The company owns 3,600 acres of dredging grounds. Prospecting for dredging ground is active in Trinity county. The Gardella Dredging company is preparing to build a second dredge on Clear creek, near Redding, Shasta county, where it already has one operating successfully. Another dredge (No. 3) is to be constructed by the American Dredge company on the Mokelumne river, near Comanche, Calaveras county. In hydraulic mining, activity has been greater than for years in California. The big new concrete impounding dam across Slate creek in Sierra county will permit man may ever find a wife in free Russia. "Men may fight and forget," said Vera Dobrovsgaya, one of the wounded legionaries sent back to recover. "Women will never forget. The women of Russia cannot tomorrow marry men of the race they are killing today. The Germany of peace will look no better to us than the Germany of war. "Russian women will be no more able to live with German men after the war than they could now. Understand, we hate the Germans. We hate them with all the hate there is in us. We despise them—we want to kill them, not marry them." BACKING UP PROOF The Kind That Anaheim People Can Not Deny Many an earnest Anaheim man or woman has publicly endorsed Doan's Kidney Pills. Week after week, month after month you've read their statements. Would these Anaheim people recommend any medicine if it were not good? Would they confirm and repeat their statements after years had passed? Local proof is good evidence. Testimony confirmed years after is better evidence. The following Anaheim woman's statement leaves no room for doubt. It must convince every kidney sufferer who reads it. If your back aches—if your kidneys are weak, profit by the experience of Mrs. Joaheim Luneburg, 122 S. Claudina Street. She says: "I suffered from rheumatic pains for some time. My back was weak and I was lame all over. On a friend's advice I bought some of Doan's Kidney Pills at Mullinix's Drug Store, and their use helped me from the first. Continued use SLACKERS Many slackers are reported throughout the United States and officers are kept busy rounding them up. There are several kinds of slackers. There are those who would rather surrender to an enemy than fight him, there are those who would rather fight constituted authority at home than a foreign foe, and there are many like the young man in Maine who wrote the exemption board: "I thank you for your kind invitation to report for ex- Gardella Dredging company is preparing to build a second dredge on Clear creek, near Redding, Shasta county, where it already has one operating successfully. Another dredge (No. 3) is to be constructed by the American Dredge company on the Mokelumne river, near Comanche, Calaveras county. In hydraulic mining, activity has been greater than for years in California. The big new concrete impounding dam across Slate creek in Sierra county, will permit hydraulic mining again at Howland Flat, St. Louis, Port Wine, and a number of other old time placer camps, long virtually deserted. Many old deserted hydraulic mines in the Cherokee and Columbia hill districts of Nevada county, the Magalia region in Butte county, Gold Run, and Dutch Flat, Placer county, and other places, are being tested with a view of reopening them and starting the giants against the banks. Experiments are being carefully made in certain drift mines in Butte county, with a view of mining the gravel of the buried rivers by machinery instead of by hand. The mining of copper, lead and zinc in California thus far in 1917, has been much more active and prosperous than that of gold mining. As usual the larger proportion of the copper output comes from Shasta county although Calaveras and Plumas counties are more and more coming to the front as large producers. The Afterthought mine at Ingot, Shasta county, after being closed nine years has resumed activity and is being equipped with a flotation plant and a roaster. The old Minnesota mine, near Keswick, in the same country, after being idle 20 years has been reopened by the Mountain Copper company. This company has also opened the keystone group of copper claims on Flat creek, in the same vicinity. The old Balaklala copper company is again active and shipping ore this year. The electrolytic zinc plant of the Mammoth copper company has been completed and put in operation. The Arps Copper company adjoining the Bully Hill, in Shasta county, has placed orders for a hoist, compressor, drills, etc., preparatory to deeper development. The Copper King mine at Clovis, Fresno county, long idle, began under new management to ship ore again in May of this year to the Mammoth smelter. In Calaveras county a converter has been installed at the smelter of the Penn Mining company so that blister statement leaves no room for doubt. It must convince every kidney sufferer who reads it. If your back aches—if your kidneys are weak, profit by the experience of Mrs. Joahelim Luneburg, 122 S. Claudina Street. She says: "I suffered from rheumatic pains for some time. My back was weak and I was lame all over. On a friend's advice I bought some of Doan's Kidney Pills at Mullinix's Drug Store, and their use helped me from the first. Continued use left me without a sign of kidney complaint or rheumatic pains." Nearly Nine Years Later, Mrs. Luneburg said: "I use Doan's Kidney Pills when I need kidney medicine and I always receive prompt relief. I gladly confirm my former endorsement of this medicine." Price 50c, at all dealers. Don't simply ask for a kidney remedy—get Doan's Kidney Pills—the same that Mrs. Luneburg has twice publicly recommended. Foster-Milburn Co., Props., Buffalo, N. Y. ANOTHER CONSERVATION OPPOR-TUNITY Encourage sea fisheries, is another slogan of the times. There are enough fish off these shores to keep the whole of America from starvation. All we need is a boat and a place to put it, a hook and line, an angler's license, and a patriotic willingness to brave the dangers of the deep while catching our mess of barracuda, or sea bass, or smelt, or sardines, or shark, or whatever come to our gaff. Yes, sharks are edible; and so are lots of other marine creatures which heretofore have been passed by in high disdain. The Atlantic dogfish was despised before someone had the inspiration to change its name, whoreupon it became a favorite article of diet. Fish may be preserved by salting, drying, canning or smoking. What an infinitude of opportunity opens here, when we thought we were facing short rations! Moreover, we are informed that fish may be eaten on other days besides Friday; so, if we do not care to go to the trouble of curing our catch, we may have fresh fish as often as we have the spirit to go after it; provided, that is, we get a bite. As a matter of food economy we should encourage boating and fishing. PROMPT PAYMENT Many slackers are reported throughout the United States and officers are kept busy rounding them up. There are several kinds of slackers. There are those who would rather surrender to an enemy than fight him; there are those who would rather fight constituted authority at home than a foreign foe; and there are many like the young man in Maine who wrote the exemption board: "I thank you for your kind invitation to report for examination, but I have decided not to enter the army at present." WAR GOATS Keep a war goat! Help to save and to keep down the price of butter fats. This is the advice being sent out by the state council of defense to every householder in California who has a vacant lot available near his home. There are a half dozen good reasons why every family living in a suburban locality should keep a war goat, declares the state council. They are: Goat's milk is practically twice as rich in butter fats and nutritive qualities as ordinary cow's milk. Furthermore, goat's milk does not have a "peccular" or strong taste, as is often averred, if the goat is kept ordinarily clean. A goat will thrive and grow fat and will produce from one to six quarts of rice milk a day on a diet of weeds, table scraps and such forage as it can glean from being staked out on a vacant lot; grain feed for goats is unnecessary. Goat's milk, diluted with an equal quantity of boiled water, is of the same consistency, just as rich, and has practically the same taste as cow's milk. In addition to producing the finest qualities of butter and cheese, goat's milk is recommended by all physicians as being particularly beneficial to nursing infants and growing children. Keeping a war goat not only helps to solve the butter fat problem, but also means a new source of meat supply; for after the goat has supplied milk and butter fats for the family for two or three years, it can be sold for butchering purposes at as good a price as can be obtained for mutton or beef. In an endeavor to induce every suburban family to keep a war goat, the state council is having prepared a bulletin telling how to prepare one for In operation. The Ars Copper company adjoining the Bully Hill, in Shasta county, has placed orders for a hoist, compressor, drills, etc., preparatory to deeper development. The Copper King mine at Clovis, Fresno county, long idle, began under new management to ship ore again in May of this year to the Mammoth smelter. In Calaveras county a converter has been installed at the smelter of the Penn Mining company so that blister copper will be hereafter shipped instead of matte. Electric power has been substituted for steam throughout the plant. More units are being added to the flotation plant of the Calaveras Copper company, in the same county. In Plumas county, the Indian Valley railroad is now operating between the Engels copper mines and Keddie, on the Western Pacific Ry. The capacity of the flotation plant at the mine has been greatly increased. The International Copper company is making large shipments of copper ore from Taylorsville to the Tooele smelter, Utah. The United States Smelting and Refining company is increasing its activities in the Plumas county copper field. In Siskiyou county the Gray Eagle Copper company has put its roads in Happy Camp in shape and has several diamond drills at work. The Hunters Paradise copper group has been bonded to the Mason Valley Mines company, with a view of immediate development. RUSSIAN AMAZONS There will be no Russian-German intermarriage after this war. The Legion of Death has struck a blow to this practice which before the war prevailed in the border provinces. Members of the woman's battalion make this declaration and are determined to make it a national pledge that no German company adjoining the Bully Hill, in Shasta county, has placed orders for a hoist, compressor, drills, etc., preparatory to deeper development. The Copper King mine at Clovis, Fresno county, long idle, began under new management to ship ore again in May of this year to the Mammoth smelter. PROMPT PAYMENT Two insurance agents—a Yankee and an Englishman—were bragging about their rival methods. The Britlisher was hodling forth on the system of prompt payment carried out by his people—no trouble, no fuss, no attempt to wiggle out of settlement. "If the man died tonight," he continued, "his widow would receive her money by the first post tomorrow morning." "You don't say?" drawled the Yankee. "See here, now, you talk of promp payment! Waal, our office is on the third floor of a building forty-nine stories high. One of our clients lived in that forty-ninth story, and fell out of the window. We handed him his check as he passed." SUPREMES AT THE TOP The following were the highest prices realized for Valencia oranges in the United States last week: Anaheim Supreme $4.80 Old Mission 4.70 Prices on the higher grades of fruit remain the same, the lower grades are still much lower than a month ago, which goes to show how much more money there is in raising the finest quality of fruit, the best will always sell at a satisfactory figure, in this lies the real secret between satisfaction and disappointment in the citrus business. Keeping a war goat not only helps to solve the butter fat problem, but also means a new source of meat supply, for after the goat has supplied milk and butter fats for the family for two or three years, it can be sold for butchering purposes at as good a price as can be obtained for mutton or beef. In an endeavor to induce every suburban family to keep a war goat, the state council is having prepared a bulletin telling how to properly care for the best breed of milch goats, which will be sent upon request.
