KETTNER REPORTS NEWPORT
HARBOR LINES APPROVED
BY THE WAR DEPARTMENT
The proposition to build a coast boulevard from Ventura to San Juan Capistrano was unanimously endorsed at the meeting of the associated chambers held at Orange Wednesday night. The highway will cost $1,000,000, and the proposition is to have the legislature appropriate half the sum, the three counties dividing the other half in proportion to the mileage.
T. B. Talbert, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, declared that the construction of the proposed boulevard near the Pacific's edge would be one of the grandest things that could happen, for it would make a drive that would be world famous. He said that Orange county's share would not be over $166,000, and increased valuations along the coast would compensate the county for the expenditure. "We ought to be tickled to death, to get half the cost paid by the state," declared Talbert, "and we ought to urge the state to make the appropriation." Talbert moved the adoption of evaporation of lake waters, at intervals between some of the great outbursts of volcanic ejecta which formed so large a part of the Tertiary deposits. The boric acid was undoubtedly derived from fresh volcanic materials and carried to its present position by underground waters. The deposits are in two principal beds, each 5 feet thick and about 50 feet apart. These beds have been mined to a depth of 500 feet. All the borax produced in the United States is obtained from the California mines, mainly from Lang, and Death Valley. The value of borate ores produced in 1915 was nearly $1,700,000. The borax is made by heating the pulverized colemanite with a solution of sodium carbonate, forming the soluble sodium borate, which crystallizes.

Railroads State Thousands Are Coming to Attend the Exposition
All railroads have ordered fare and a third rates from all points in California, Arizona and Nevada to San Bernardino for the National Orange Show to be held there February 20 to 28.
The order for the reduced rates is made as the result of the widespread interest in the citrus fruit exposition, according to the traffic officials of the roads. It is the first time any attraction outside of an international or state exposition has been granted excursion rates from neighboring states.
There will be many thousands of easterners at the Orange Show, according to information from the railroad companies. A letter from Congressman Kettner announcing that the Secretary of War had approved the Newport Harbor lines was received. "I have just been rushed to death, almost, with work on the different appropriations which I am trying to get through this session," said Kettner, "and what with caucus meetings I have hardly had time for my voluminous correspondence.
"The map showing harbor lines at Newport was approved by the Secretary of War under date of January 18, as authorized in Section 3 of the river and harbor act, approved July 27, 1916.
"Every point we win makes us closer to our goal, and I am hoping that your dreams in conenction with Newport Harbor will all be realized."
F. C. Krause thought that D. W. McDannald, this county's representative at the Los Angeles chamber of commerce, had been boosting some particular localities. He understood that McDannald should boost no locality, but should act in a general way for the entire county. He said he had letters as exhibits. President Bradford appointed A. Nelson of Buena Park, H. A. Wassum of Tustin and H. L. Heffner of Huntington Beach as a committee to investigate the matter.
J. H. Whitaker, secretary of the Anaheim Board of Trade, said a bill has been proposed, which if adopted, would cut off all appropriations of the county supervisors for advertising purposes. The matter was referred to the legislative committee for investigation and report.
Secretary Metzgar reported a special cup award had been received for the county's float in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses New Year's day.
Two thousand Orange county buttons, in the shape and color of an orange, with "Orange County—Nature's Prolific Wonderland" imprinted thereon, were ordered made for distribution on Orange county day at the National interest in the citrus fruit exposition, according to the traffic officials of the roads. It is the first time any attraction outside of an international or state exposition has been granted excursion rates from neighboring states.
There will be many thousands of easterners at the Orange Show, according to information from the railroad companies. The fame of the exposition has spread throughout the country, and many of the tourists already in California or coming have arranged their itineraries so they will be at the Orange Show.
Both the big canvas auditoriums to house the exposition are now in place and within a few days hundreds of workmen will begin the final rush to install the great fruit displays that are coming from all parts of California.

JITNEY FOR HOBOS
Tramps and vagrants no longer "hit the grit" or "ride the rods" when leaving Brownsville, Texas. Instead they occupy a cushioned seat in a flivver, for Brownsville is probably the only city in the United States operating a "hobo jitney." There is an ordinance against hopping trains, but the city authorities have observed that where vags are ordered out of town they walk only a short distance and then come back. So to avoid tempting the tramps to violate the city ordinance, and to make certain they would be moved so far from the city that it would be easier to walk to some other point, the "hobo jitney" was inaugurated.
MEASURING THE VALUE OF CALIFORNIA STREAMS
The matter was referred to the legislative committee for investigation and report.
Secretary Metzgar reported a special cup award had been received for the county's float in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses New Year's day.
Two thousand Orange county buttons, in the shape and color of an orange, with "Orange County—Nature's Prolific Wonderland" imprinted thereon, were ordered made for distribution on Orange county day at the National Orange Show at San Bernardino.
H. P. Noll was announced as a newly-elected member of the associated chambers from Anaheim.
Director Sears of the Continental Feature Film company of Orange, which for several months has been engaged in producing the film "Opportunity," showing all the beauty spots of the county for advertising the company's contests throughout the East, announced the last scenes of the picture were taken Tuesday, and the picture would be shown the last of next week at the Mason, Anaheim; Colonial, Orange, and the Temple theatre, Santa Ana. He said no donations to help make the film have been asked, and urged everyone to see the picture, for they not only will be getting their money's worth, but will indirectly help pay the cost of the film.
THE SOURCE OF BORAX
The volcanic deposits on the east side of the Calico Mountains, at the edge of the Mohave desert in this state, include clays containing colemanite, a crystalline borate of lime.
Colemanite contains 50.9% of boric acid, 27.2% of lime and 21.9% of water. The deposits near the Calico mountains are believed to have been formed by replacement of lime beds that were laid down locally during the

survey, department of the interior. A report that will be useful to engineers and others interested in the utilization of the streams tributary to the Pacific Ocean in California has just been issued by the United States geological survey as Water Supply Paper 361, which is one of a series of 12 reports presenting the results of measurements of flow of the streams of the United States made during 1913.
The survey began the measurement of streams in 1888 in connection with special studies of water for irrigating, and since 1895 the bills appropriating money for the work of the survey have carried an item for gauging streams. In July, 1913, about 1,380 gaging stallops were maintained by the survey and cooperating organizations and many measurements of discharge were made at other points. The report on the streams of the Pacific slope basins in California represents the result of cooperative work between the federal survey and the state. The records include descriptions of the stations at which the measurements were made and tables showing daily gauge heights and daily and monthly discharge.

TO MAKE LEATHER FROM SHARK HIDES
New Industry That May Prove Profitable to Orange County
The United States Bureau of Fisheries has been experimenting for some time upon a process to make leather out of shark hide and a few days ago came the news that a process had been perfected. It has long been a well known fact that shark hide wears like iron but no method of tanning was found, up to the present time, which would render the hide pliable enough to work up into leather commodities. In experimenting, the government men find that the skin of the shark is grained very similar to the hide of an animal and with proper treatment can be made as soft and pliable as the kind that goes into milady's glove. The wide variety of sharks makes possible many different kinds of leather which can be used for almost any article in the line of leather goods.
Particularly, it is said, is the toughness and durability of the hide valuable in the making of shoes and boots. The color and variegated mottlings that are so often admired in such sharks as the so called "leopard", are retained in the new government process with the result that many rare and beautiful specimens of leathercraft are obtained to delight the most fastidious purchaser of Russio leather.
The new industry which has been fathered by Uncle Sam is looked on with great favor by those who have looked into it as a possible solution of the high cost of leather.
The Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles has been interested in the possibilities of development contained in the shark leather industry.

Statement That Southern California Hotels are Crowded is Corrected
In an effort to correct impressions in the East that California hotels are full and to overflowing, the Salt Lake Route has sent circular letters to soliciting representatives in the East, advising them that such a condition does not obtain throughout the state or throughout Southern California. It is believed many have given up proposed trips to California because of the reported condition.
"It is true that it is practically impossible at the present time to obtain accommodations in certain well known Pasadena winter resort hotels and this condition will, no doubt, obtain for some little time, possibly through March," reads the circular letter. "These hotels represent a very small proportion of the hotel capacity of Los Angeles and Southern California. Thousands of excellent hotels, apartment houses, furnished bungalows and furnished flats of every class are available. California winter visitors may still obtain a comfortable dwelling place accompanied by such service and surroundings as they may care to pay for. In particular the towns surrounding Los Angeles have ample accommodations."
"Please advise prospective Southern California visitors accordingly and assure them that while we have more visitors here now than ever before, we are still in a positio nto take care of more. The winter season is now at its height and right now is the time to make that trip to California."
TRACK MEET DATES
The Southern California high school track meet this year will probably be held at Long Beach. MEALY BUG CONVENTION
The mealy bugs are not to hold the convention, but the horticultural commissioners of Southern California are planning for action which might make such a convention wise. State Commissioner Hecke has called a meeting of all horticultural commissioners of Southern California at Riverside on February 6. It is to be hoped that plans for extermination, or at least for more effective control, of the mealy bug may be devised that day.
Mealy bugs were formerly considered a mild mannered sort of a pest but years of inhabiting the citrus orchards of California have convinced them that climatic and other conditions are ripe for making themselves very much at home, hence they are becoming more of a menace than was dreamed possible a few years ago. Their natural enemies have been encouraged, sprays and double fumigation have been tried, and while millions have been slaughtered, other millions remain. More effective control methods must be devised.

Orange county made a fortunate purchase in flour last summer and is now saving $3 per barrel on what is used in the institutions. In July of last year, the purchasing agent made contracts with Orange county flour mills, to supply the jail, hospital, juvenile home, etc., with monthly flour necessities. The prices paid ranged from $5.80 to $7.20 per barrel, according to the grade. Today those flour prices range from $6.80 to $10.20 for the same grades, but the county is paying the price agreed upon last summer. A saving of many hundreds of dollars has been effected.

ORANGE COUNTY DAY
SATURDAY, FEB. 24
Preparations Making for a Fine Exhibit at San Bernardino
With Saturday, February 24, officially designated as Orange County day at the National Orange Show at San Bernardino, preparations are now being made for a monster Orange county demonstration on that day, probably with a train and auto excursion to San Bernardino, taking many hundreds of local people to the display.
Orange county is especially favored in being given a Saturday for her own day, as this will allow a great many more people to attend, and the majority will remain over Sunday, giving them plenty of time to examine the various exhibits and community displays.
“It’s a little too early yet to announce plans for the Orange County day,” said Secretary Metzgar, “but now that we know the exact date, we will begin at once on the plans. I expect to see a record attendance from Orange county at the show, and we may have both a train and an automobile excursion to San Bernardino that day, allowing those who wish to remain over Sunday.”
Active work will soon be started on preparing the county exhibit at the Orange Show, whose central feature will be a large orange on a revolving platform, with a beautiful girl inside with placards telling of the county’s resources, with which she will explain the local resources to the audiences through the trap door.
A FAULTY MEMORY
Sandy Rogers was an old station master in Scotland. He was a plous man, but, like many other railroad men, he was at times a little profane. Sandy attended a dinner of the Burns Society one evening and arrived home after midnight in a decidedly mellow condition. He undressed himself with some difficulty and went down on his knees beside the bed, where he sent forth some incoherent mutterings that awoke his wife.
“What's the matter, Sandy?” she asked. “Are ye no feelin' well?”
"A'm feelin' aricht," replied Sandy, "but a canna mind a damned word of ma prayers."
