Jos, Helmsen The basket ball team representing the Fremont Athletic Club defeated a freshman team from the high school one day last week to the tune of 10 to 9. This is the second time the grammar school team has been victorious over this aggregation and its members are justly proud of the fact. Grammar school boys playing were Harry Clabaugh, Clare Cavanaugh, guards; Darroll Webb, center; Fritz Yoern and Fritz Kemper, forwards. The city trustees having practically rejected all offers of sites for a city park, at their last meeting, J. D. Lavin withdrew his offer of his 10 acres on South Los Angeles street. The following day a leading capitalist of this city offered Mr. Lavin $12,500 for his land, which offer was rejected. We understand the intending purchaser considered this land a good investment at that price, as the tract is one of the best in this part of the county. Geo. Hamler, while sunning himself on the sidewalk the first of the week, smoking a two-for-a-quarter, observed this was ideal weather for December. He had just received a letter from Mrs. Walter Reeves, sister of Mrs. Hamler, who spent last winter here, and is now at her home in Moline, Ill., in which she stated the thermometer was two degrees below zero and the weather anything but pleasant. Mrs. Reeves is negotiating for the sale of her Illinois property and contemplates returning to this city to reside. The show-window at Theodore Roberts' jewelry store was one of the attractions of the town Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Mr. Roberts secured a large block of ice, placed a regulated South Bend watch in its center, put the attraction in his window, and awaited results. The watch never failed to keep perfect time and only stopped Sunday when it had run down. It was taken out, rewound and replaced in its former position, and kept running until the block of ice melted. A large sign was placed in front of the store telling that a watch was keeping perfect time frozen in a block of ice, and many people were attracted by the display. Mr. Roberts has a reputation for being up-to-date, and is ever on the lookout for new and novel ideas, this latter one of which is the latest out. Boys' and girls' cloth bound 12mo books, 15c and up. A PROFITABLE INVESTMENT In purchasing an article of jewelry, we always like to know that we get our money's worth. In the long list of articles of adornment there is nothing that gives more satisfaction, or is more safe as an investment than a diamond. The output of the diamond fields of the world is controlled by a powerful syndicate of rich firms, the Rothschilds, Hirschs and others who regulate the prices, and no matter how many diamonds are found, they dictate the price. The price of diamonds has more than doubled within the last 15 years. They advanced 10 per cent last October, and another raise of 10 per cent is to occur the first of the year. In view of this fact we have put in a well selected line of perfect white stones that we will sell at a small profit, agreeing to refund the price at any time within one year, less 10 per cent. THEODORE ROBERTS. The safest place to buy diamonds. We set our own stones in any style of mounting. Investigate before you buy.—Advertisement. The 22d anniversary meeting of the Presbyterian Christian Endeavor Society was held in the church Sunday evening with a good attendance present. This society was organized in 1890, three years after the Christian Endeavor movement was promulgated. Only two charter members of the society are still in Anaheim. They are Mrs. T. S. Grimshaw and Mrs. L. E. Miller. At Sunday evening's meeting, Mrs. Grimshaw spoke of the early society and related some of the experiences of the society. She said that this society is the oldest in the county and although many misgivings had been expressed by old members of the church, it had been a success from the very start. It was organized when Rev. Hiram Hill was the pastor of the church. It was the only young people's society in town and numbered among its members attendants of all the churches in the city. These churches realizing the great advantage of a young people's society after a few months organized societies of their own, and this largely depleted the membership of the original society, but it pushed ahead and never in its history discontinued its meetings. The society now ranks high among young people's societies hereabouts and excellent meetings are held at 6:30 o'clock Sunday evenings to which the public is cordially invited.
