Mr. Chapman will be here again tomorrow afternoon, when another meeting will be held at the Methodist church with a view to beginning a campaign of education here along lines of the moral uplift of the city. Judge Howard disposed of 11 hoboes, one petty larcenist and two crimson-beaks in court Monday morning. The hoboes formed the finest crop so far harvested this season. They were taken at a camp on North Orange street Saturday evening while discussing a jug of claret. The larcenist stole a pair of shoes from the S. Q. R. store. They were each given 30 days in the county jail. The beaks were consigned to the city bastile for five days each. W. G. Potter was in town from Santa Ana Saturday on his way to the west country to superintend shipments of beets to the sugar factory at Santa Ana of which he is field superintendent. Mr. Potter says the mill will close down this week with a run of 75,000 tons of beets sliced. He adds the factory has no trouble with its waste water which is run off in pipes and used for irrigation. The season's run has been most successful, which he says is true of all the mills operating in this county. Dr. Hyde, of Berkeley, consulting engineer of the state board of health, was here several days the past week looking into the matter of waste water from the sugar factory. He was in conference with President Peck and other officials of the company in an effort to solve the problem. He has in view four methods for caring for waste water and will in the near future recommend one of them for adoption. On leaving for the north he said the factory waste water would be well taken care of next season and that no cause for complaint would exist on the part of residents in the neighborhood.
