Clabaugh, Agent Superior Service via Santa Fe ANAHEIM (continued from 9th page) In addition to the facilities for irrigation furnished by the foregoing company, the whole country round about Anaheim is underlaid with water bearing strata at a depth varying from 100 to 200 feet, so that anywhere at an expense of not more than $200 a well can be put down which will pump enough water to keep thoroughly irrigated more than 100 acres of orange or walnut groves or crops of any kind. Hundreds of pumping plants are located within a radius of two or three miles of the city. These private irrigation plants vary in size from small ones costing only a few hundred dollars and suited for the needs of a home of a few acres only to large pumping plant, any one of which has a capacity sufficient to irrigate a few hundred acres. Anaheim Sugar The greatest individual manufacturing industry of Anaheim is the Anaheim Sugar Company plant located at the north city limits. This plant is one of the most complete and modern sugar factories in California. It has a daily capacity of slicing and manufacturing into sugar seven hundred tons of beets daily. It has also a complete pulp drying plant in connection that will produce six thousand tons dried molasses pulp, annually. The complete plant was built at a cost of $850,000, and has railway connections with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, and Southern Pacific railways. It is situated near the center of the best beet growing district and this year will slice at least six thousand tons of beets. The beets in this section average in sugar percentage the highest of any section in the United States. The average percentage is from nineteen and one-half to twenty and one-half per cent for the whole sugar making campaign. The annual labor payroll from this plant during its one hundred days of active operation which goes direct into trade channels, is about $100,000, the balance of the year between sugar campaigns, is about $50,000, making a labor payroll of $150,000 annually. The payroll for beets delivered is over $350,000, this makes the total amount paid out annually for labor and beets $500,000. Te factory buildings are off brick and steel construction, cement floors and strictly fireproof. This is the north sugar factory in Orange county, and another one will be completed on July 1, 1912. With the five faccories in operation, Orange county will produce over eighty million bounds of sugar per annum, having market value of $4,000,000. Climatic Conditions In Southern California the climate series according to elevation and dissistance from the sea. To one who is familiar with the variations of climate which these conditions produce a word of explanation may be necessary. Along the ocean front there is conferable cool wind and fog while in and in the higher regions the atmoshere is dry, frost occurs in winter and hot weather is experienced in summer. The rainfall is slightly greatat the coast than inland. The cool mist air of the sea beach, the dry atmosphere of the inland regions, average rainfall of about twelve ches spread over four winter months, and a summer of eight months without rainfall constitute the extremes of Southern California cliate. Now we can understand why the pioneers who founded the city of Anaheim over half a century ago dislayed such great wisdom in selecting the present site for his Mother dolony. Arriving in Southern California with practically the whole countury uninhabitated they had their voice and they chose wisely. The unable climate appealed to them as does now to all who live in or ear this city. We have no extremes heat or cold to make life unpleasant. Three hundred and twenty-four days of sunshine are ours each year. Wunder, lightning and storms are actually unknown. No wonder those pioneers chose this garden spot which ming midway between the mountains to these institutions of higher learning and thus have the great advantage of having a home in a small city and at the same time enjoying the benefits of a metropolis. Churches While Anaheim in the last five years has made wonderful advancement in her material growth and prosperity she has not been marking time, but keeping step in those things that make for the moral and spiritual uplift of her citizens. The one great factor and of which she is justly proud, is her churches, of which there are nine. Of these the Catholics lead in point of members as well as allied work, this being the location of the S*. Catharines Orphanage for boys, which is caring for from two hundred fifty to three hundrend inmates. The Protestant denominations are represented by the M. E. church, English and German, Episcopal, German Lutheran, German Baptist, German Evangelical, Christian and Presbyterian. The Christian Scientists have erected a place of meeting. Of the above the Presbyterians and Methodists have had to enlarge their buildings owing to increased membership and audiences. The pastor of the Christian church informs us that it will be but a short time until they have to enlarge or erect a new and up-to-date building. The Sunday Schools and Young Peoples societies are leading factors in the work. In the above, Anaheim has all that is needed in the selection of a location for a home for the worship of the older ones and the religious instruc tion of the younger ones of the family. Our Flowers and Shrubs These we have in great numbers and almost endless variety. For those whose idea of a garden is something planted and watered once with practically the whole coununinhabitated they had their voice and they chose wisely. The tourable climate appealed to them as does now to all who live in or ear this city. We have no extremes heat or cold to make life unpleastant. Three hundred and twenty-four days of sunshine are ours each year. Wunder, lightning and storms are actually unknown. No wonder those pioneers chose this garden spot which bring midway between the mountains and the sea, yet is just near enough to the ocean that we can enjoy its colling breezes and have such pleasture summer and delightful winters. Our nights are always cool and many residents sleep in woolen blankets the whole year. On account of this indescribably been climate the Board of Directors in our Sanitarium decided that the Sanitarium accommodations were far to small and greatly enlarged the institution. They find that patients offering from diseases of the heart and kidneys are greatly benefitted by being here. This low altitude is comtable to the weakest heart, and the atmosphere being conducive to tree action of the skin relieves the weakened kidneys of a lot of work that they would otherwise have to do. And since "everything that is grown" Southern California is to be found owing at Anaheim" people with peak stomachs find right here that articular food which they can digest in this way are restored to good health. Nervous patients enjoy the col breezes, the beautiful drives, the spiring scenery, the cheerful surroundings of Sanitarium life and are ought back to health once more. So right here in this Mother Colony is place of beginnings, this balmy knissed Anaheim where nature has read her beauties and mother earth lights to bring forth her unfailing entitudes one may pass his days in pace, in plenty and in happiness. The Schools of Anaheim There is no city in California, of the size of Anaheim, that has a better school system, nor that offers better educational advantages to its young people than does our own city. There are about 600 pupils enrolled in the public schools and 125 in the high school. Four fine buildings are owned by the Anaheim District, while the Anaim Union High School District, has scently purchased an eleven acre area and is now erecting upon it buildings costing one hundred thousand Young Peoples societies are leading factors in the work. In the above, Anaheim has all that is needed in the selection of a location for a home for the worship of the older ones and the religious instruction of the younger ones of the family. Our Flowers and Shrubs These we have in great numbers and almost endless variety. For those whose idea of a garden is something planted and watered once in a while nothing is better than geraniums and roses. One of our gardens boasts of a hedge of double geraniums ten feet high, well trimmed and cared for. Marguerite bushes grow several feet high and larger than a wash tub. Heliotropes do equally as well but sometimes freeze to the ground but immediately spring up again. Fuchsias grow to great size and are covered with a wealth of bloom if planted on the north side of buildings or a shady spot. In July hydrangeas are at their best and their enormous trusses of pink bloom are a never falling source of interest for the true flower lover willing to give a little extra care and many semi-tropic plants can be grown with only the protection of a lath house. In shrubs, oleanders, hibiscus, snowballs, laurestimes are perhaps the most popular. All the old-fashioned annuals and perennials can be grown to great size and beauty. Dahlias and chrysanthemums do especially well. It would seem that ferns are special favorites, for there are so many fine specimen plants to be seen on the verandas and porches. All varieties of lilies and narcissus as well as gladiol thrive, but tulips and hyacinths are not satisfactory. Space is lacking to tell half there is to be seen. I must not omit one that especially attracts me, a large hydrangea has been grown in such shape as to entirely cover the roof of a good-sized summer house. The trunk of the plant is on the center of the building and is thicker than a man's wrist. Anaheim in a Nutshell Anaheim has a population of approximately 4000. Anaheim has 12 churches and 6 schools. Municipal electric light and water plant. Gas plant. Two local and long distance telephone systems. Well organized fire department. Two weekly newspapers.
