HAS THE LARGEST CIRCULATION
PREPARING TO GO AHEAD AGAIN
The Orange County Investment Company, which has been a solvent corporation, but has been in disrepute owing to mismanagement by its recently deposed president, this week practically passes out of existence by purchase of its holdings by the National Home and Town Builders of Los Angeles. Formal ratification of this action by the company's directors has not as yet been made by stockholders, it is true, but this will in all probability be done at a meeting called for this purpose on August 1. The new company purposes taking up the work of erecting houses here and at other points in the county, just where the work was left off last year when the directors, uncovering wrong-doing on the part of the president, E. L. Olmstead, and deposed him from office. A subsequent suit brought by Allan Knapp against Olmstead, making sensational charges against him, served still further to tie the company up. Since that time nothing has been doing along development lines by the company, and its stock has been valueless.
By efforts of A. S. Bradford and his associates on the board of direc-
one minute when the ballot could have helped me over a hard place or could have given me any consideration that was not accorded me without.
"Finally, a large majority of women do not want the ballot; they do not believe in its righteousness or its efficiency. This is hard to prove because so many of them refuse to say so above their breath or to one who differs from them. If they find themselves on the 11th of October with the ballot in their hands, one can only say—or refrain from saying—It serves you right.
However, I have too much faith in the wisdom and judgment of the men of California, to fear that the burden of the ballot will be thrust upon the women of the state, at the request of a small minority of them."
SAIZ MAY NOT HANG
Stay of Execution Issued, Pending a Decision of Upper Court
Judge West on Tuesday signed a certificate of probable cause in the case of Rosario Saiz, under sentence of death for the murder of Jose Machado. Saiz was ordered hanged on August 31. His attorneys, Weisel & Dutton, of this city, took the necessary steps for an appeal to the supreme court, and the signing of the certificate of probable cause by the judge is a formal matter, showing that an appeal has been taken, but the effect of the certificate is a stay of execution.
That is, the sentence of hanging cannot be carried out until Saiz's case is acted upon by the supreme court.
Should the supreme court uphold the superior court of this county and should that decision be given before August 31, Saiz will be hanged upon that day. However, as is more than likely, should that decision by the supreme court not be reached before
last year when the directors, uncovering wrong-doing on the part of the president, E. L.Olmstead, and deposed him from office. A subsequent suit brought by Allan Knapp against Olmstead, making sensational charges against him, served still further to tie the company up. Since that time nothing has been doing along development lines by the company, and its stock has been valueless.
By efforts of A. S. Bradford and his associates on the board of directors, Olmstead's holdings are this week taken over by these gentlemen, at a reduced valuation.
The amount paid to Olmstead we believe to be high, but it is the best the directors could do, and they took over his holdings at this figure, feeling that it was better to get rid of him and start the work of development, than to have its affairs tied up, with nothing in sight but ruination in the end. That Olmstead is morally guilty of wrong-doing, is the opinion freely expressed by directors and stockholders. That he can be made to suffer for his acts in a court of justice is another matter.
The new holding company is vouched for by Mr. Bradford and Mr. Hale of Placentia, each of them large holders of stock in the investment company, and by members of the company's board of directors. The word of these gentlemen should be sufficient to dispel any doubts which may linger in minds of stockholders as to the genuineness of the transfer, as well as the ability of the new company to perform its part of the obligation. The new company has a great future before it in the local field. The old investment companies were prospering, when in an evil hour ill-conceived jobbery put them to the bad. Let the work be taken up again, and let the new company advance and get busy.
MRS. CASWELL STATES VIEWS
Gives Her Reasons for Opposing Woman Suffrage
Mrs. George S. Caswell, president of the Southern California association opposed to woman suffrage, in answer to a recent query as to why she opposed woman suffrage, replied:
"I believe women in general to be fully the equal of men in general. Who doesn't? But women cannot have both their rgihts and their privileges, and I believe we are infinitely better off without privileges than we could ever be without our rights. I mean better off not self-that an appeal has been taken, but the effect of the certificate is a stay of execution.
That is, the sentence of hanging cannot be carried out until Saiz's case is acted upon by the supreme court.
Should the supreme court uphold the superior court of this county and should that decision be given before August 31, Saiz will be hanged upon that day. However, as is more than likely, should that decision by the supreme court not be reached before August 31, Saiz cannot be hanged upon that day. If, after August 31, the supreme court affirms the lower court Saiz must be brought back and sentenced to be hanged at a date to be fixed by the judge.
On the other hand, should the supreme court fail to sustain the lower court, Saiz will get a new trial, and in the event of a new trial he cannot be hanged since his neck will have been once in jeopardy."
NEW UNIFORMS
Cadet Band Receives Them From Columbus, Ohio
F. A. Yungbluth on Tuesday received twenty-three uniforms from Columbus, Ohio, for Crowther's cadet band. The uniforms are of dark blue material, bordered with ornamental silk braid. They comprise blouse, cap and trousers, and are in every way models of neatness.
Their cost at the factory was $435.85. The net amount charged the boys by Mr. Yungbluth is $326.55, the trade commission amounting to $108.96, having been generously eliminated by him. Mr. Yungbluth also made all measurements free of charge, and for his liberality will have the thanks of the entire community. The cost of the uniforms will be met by popular subscription. The band will give an open-air concert in the near future, when they will appear for the first time in their handsome new uniforms.
HIS COMPANIONS SLEPT
Pedro Baisa Kills Himself at Beet Camp
Supposedly a suicide with no one knowing the reason for it, Pedro Baisa, a Mexican aged 30 years, was found dead fifteen feet from a tent in which five other Mexican beethands were asleep. A bullet hole entered beneath the chin. The bullet went straight toward the zenith and passed through the skull and out.
Mrs. George S. Caswell, president of the Southern California association opposed to woman suffrage, in answer to a recent query as to why she opposed woman suffrage, replied:
"I believe women in general to be fully the equal of men in general. Who doesn't? But women can not have both their rgihts and their privileges, and I believe we are infinitely better off without privileges than we could ever be without our rights. I mean better off, not selfishly or weakly, but politically, if you will, as working women, business women, women as a whole. Above all, I am convinced that working women have nothing to gain by the ballot and much to lose. Their vote will not be independent after one or two elections. Their wages cannot be affected. If they can, why are the salaries of school teachers lower in Colorado than elsewhere, after all these years of women voting there?
"I believe that the power of the ballot in the hands of women is enormously exaggerated. We do not know what it can do and the risk of the experiment is therefore too great to be assumed at this time when vital questions like that of labor and capital are so unsettled. Women's emotionalism and nerves are not of a nature to be helpful in settling the questions of this sort. If the experiment were not successful it would be a far-reaching catastrophe.
"Men have said, laughingly, men who half-heartedly favor suffrage, Oh well, if it doesn't work well we can take it back. Can they? "I have lived many years; my life has been neither sheltered nor 'easy'; I have been in business more than 25 years. In all that time, there has never been

The regular summer outing of the Iowa Association of Southern California, will be held all day, Saturday, August 12, at Long Beach, in the beautiful grounds known as Alamitos or Bixby Park. This park is a few blocks east of the pier, is only one block from the ocean, and is a cool, delightful, shady, grassy place for a picnic away from the dust and noise of the pier and gives you a chance to meet your own Iowa acquaintances. Free coffee and lemonade will be served if you are wearing the official Iowa badge. But unless you buy our own badge, we cannot give these free. Do not buy the badges others offer you.
