Mr. and Mrs. Edward Wilson of Pasadena were guests the first of the week of Capt. and Mrs. Williams. W. M. This meeting will be of special interest as the topic for discussion is, "California Laws for Women and Children," led by Mrs. Evans. Ted Dickel and bride arrived on Sunday evening from Spokane, and will remain here several weeks. They were met in Los Angeles by H. A. Dickel, father of the groom. The party lunched with Dr. and Mrs. Bulld in Los Angeles, and came here on the evening train. Ted is here on business as well as pleasure, and will devote some time to the interests of his mining company, which is located at Republic, Wash. Judge West has appointed Weisel & Dutton of this city Attorneys for Rosario Saiz, the Mexican desperado accused of murder. They held a conference with him yesterday at the county jail. Saiz's trial is set for June 12th. The prisoner is without funds, and according to rule, the superior judge appoints his defenders. They will give him the best they have in the shop. Col. J. O. Royer and Richard Melrose are expected to arrive from Lower California the end of the week. Letters have been received from them written at La Paz, across the gulf of California from the City of Mazatlan, where a battle was fought last week between federals and insurrectos. Joseph Helmsen had as guests on a motor tour of county points of interest on Sunday Mr. and Mrs.Hart, Mrs.Daniels and Mrs.Kraatz. They visited Santa Ana, Tustin, Hewe's Hill, and other places, and returned in the evening after an enjoyable trip. L.E.Miller and B.V.Beebe were in Los Angeles on Friday transacting business in connection with the sale of the local gas plant to the new corporation which now owns the property. It is said the plant will be removed later in the year, and gas supplied by pipe line from Santa Ana. P.R.Donahoe, of Pittsburg, who recently purchased the Fred Maurer property on West street, is shaking hands with himself over his bargain, as the proposed location of the new high school in that end of town is greatly enhancing values of real estate. Mr.Donahoe is an old-time friend of Judge Shanley. Ten little children were entertained at an Easter party by their Sunday school teacher, Mrs.O.Storm, on Wednesday afternoon of last week.An egg-hunt and various games were enjoyed by the children.Martial music called them to the dining room, where a table presided over by Easter rabbits, and filled with things good to eat, was waiting to give them good cheer.Each child took home a prize for solving a picture-puzzle, and all went home happy. Mrs. Horace Allen of Arlington, cousin of Mrs. J. H. Clabaugh, visited here several days this week with Mr. Clabaugh's family. Mrs. D. R. Brown has returned from Upland and will again take up her Mrs. Cora Bliss Nagel, wife of Henry Nagel, died in Los Angeles May 29, after a lingering illness of heart trouble extending over a period of several years. She is survived by her husband, who is a brother of A. Nagel of this city. Deceased visited here about a year ago. Conway of Los Angeles, traveling freight agent of the Santa Fe, was in town on Tuesday in the interest of that company. Mr. Conway disputes with Handsome Harold Moore the honor of being the best-looking man in the railroad business in Los Angeles. He isn't married either, girls. Miss Fernkopf of this city has received a letter from her father, Herman Fernkopf, who left with members of his family some weeks ago for Kansas, after a residence in this city since last year. Mr. Fernkopf writes he and his family escaped the recent tornado, which devastated sections of that State, destroying property and sacrificing lives. He has not yet had time to write of the May blizzard which raged in that State this week. He writes that he thinks frequently of California, and his daughter says she thinks she will go back to Kansas in the fall and bring the family back to the coast again. Mr. Fernkopf's last words on leaving Anaheim in March were that if Hobson's Jap invasion arrived, he would hit the trail for California, with a musket on his shoulder. Nothing doing in that line, old man, but Nemetz cries every day at thought of your being in the tornado belt. Mr. Taylor is preparing for the coming canning season, which promises to be the largest in the history of the establishment. He is offering $40 per ton for apricots. A conference was held at Santa Ana on Tuesday morning between the Board of Supervisors and Commissioners Crookshank and Burnham of the Highway Commission. The commissioners stated that they would set a date, to be announced through the papers, for hearing of property owners in the second and fourth supervisoral districts. There are many in the Bolsa and Smeltzer districts who want the proposed improvement of Westminster road placed on the Bolsa road. Some changes are wanted in Supervisor Struck's district. The piano sale being conducted by the Wiley B. Allen Co. of Los Angeles has proven very successful. Mr. Paddock, who is in charge, tells us that the first week's business was entirely beyond expectations, and that this week's business has opened up wonderfully well. He tells us that instruments have been sold not only to customers in and around Anaheim, but also in Santa Ana, Fullerton, Orange, and several in Tustin and Olinda.
