GOOD ROADS COMMENT Commission Waiting for Stanton to Incorporate—We lose Another Nine Miles—Orangethorpe to Get Part—Fullerton's Proposition — Supervisors After Our Part of $18,000,000 By A. A. MILES It is rumored that the county highway commission recalled their report the last time in order to allow the people of the proposed town of Stanton to incorporate the north end of the county out of nine miles more of the proposed paved highway. However, in the greatness of their hearts it is also reported that if this happened, four miles of Orangethorpe avenue would be included. This would leave us 38 miles of the original 74 miles proposed in the original gentleman's agreement. Where in the south end would the other five miles be added? FULLERTON ALIVE Now comes Fullerton and proposes to build, all by herself, over fifteen miles of paved roads to cost upward of $178,000, with bridges to cost over $13,000, making nearly $200,000 in all. The mileage of Fullerton's proposed scheme is over one-third of that laid out by the commission for the whole north end of the county. Success to the scheme. STATE HIGHWAY The supervisors of the southern counties of the state have formed something of an organization in reference to the state highway. At REDEEMED THEMSELVES Kahn-Becks Defeated by a 7 to 4 Score Sunday Afternoon After two successive defeats the Anaheim baseball team corralled a game on the local diamond Sunday, defeating the Kahn-Beck aggregation of Los Angeles by a score of 7 to 4. The game was a good one with the exception of several costly errors, and was enlivened with two or three sensational plays. Both Mensenkamp and Hanson did effective work in the box, but Al was a little wild at times and gave five passes to first base. He struck out five men and allowed but five hits. Hanson only walked two and struck out ten men, but seven hits were made off his delivery. Three double plays were made during the game. In the first inning Fisher pulled a line drive out of the air with one hand and threw to Carpenter, catching a runner off the base. In the fifth Mensenkamp picked up a hot one and shot it to Fisher, who threw to Heinricks, catching two men on a forced run. The visitors also made a neat double play in the sixth, Leahy throwing to Cerro, who passed it to Lelrocco, to Stadelli, retiring Schneider and Wisser. Lewis carried off the batting honors. Out of five times to the plate he secured three hits and walked to first twice. Pete Wisser also added a few more leaves to the laurel wreath he has been wearing for himself the past few weeks with the stick. The score: ANAHEIM STATE HIGHWAY The supervisors of the southern counties of the state have formed something of an organization in reference to the state highway. At their first meeting Assemblyman Cogswell was asked to explain the act. STARTLING IF TRUE He proceeded to explain that he knew little about it, but decided that it was all wrong about San Francisco not going to assist in paying the interest. Had he taken the trouble he would find in Sec. 8 of the act the following: "Whenever any money received from the sale of bonds, under the provisions of this act, shall be expended in any county in this state, such county may pay into the state treasury such sum each year as shall equal the interest, at the rate of four per cent per annum, upon the entire sum of money expended within such county in the construction of said state highway," etc. ROUTES The routes committee organized by making W. L. Valentine of Los Angeles chairman, and C. J. Elliot of Ventura secretary. FUN BEGINS It would seem that men attempting to work under the act would read it and try to work in conformity therewith. For the south the act says (Sec. 4) that the route shall be "along the Pacific coast by the most direct and practical routes, connecting the county seats of the several counties through which it passes and joining the centers of population, together with such branch roads as may be necessary to connect therewith the several county seats lying east and west of such state highway." In the face of this Elliot and others advocate the Malibu ranch road from Ventura to Los Angeles. As the centers of population on this route would be made up principally of squirrels and chipmunks, and the route itself would be directly indirect, it is hard to reconcile it in conformity with the act. Mrs. Max Fruh. State bank notes issued before the civil war again are circulating in Pacific coast cities, much to the worry of secret service officials. Until recently it was next to impossible to convict the passers of such notes. Court decisions of late, however, have been in favor of the government. Acting Chief Moran of Washington is concentrating some of his best men on the coast in an effort to make a final clean up of the deceptive bills, which have been the cause of millions of dollars of frauds since the civil war.
