FULLERTON
C. S. Burgess of Arlington, one of the oldest residents of that place, and well known in insurance circles in many parts of Southern California, met with a serious accident while trying to alight from a moving Santa Fe train near the depot here on Friday morning shortly after 8 o'clock. He suffered a fracture of the left ankle and of the right shoulder and was badly bruised about the forehead and his hands terribly torn. He may also be seriously injured internally. Mr. Burgess, accompanied by Dr. R. E. Moss, also of Arlington, was on his way to attend a meeting of insurance men in that city, stopping off at Fullerton to make connections. A north-bound train was standing at the depot, and he went aboard to greet some friends, thinking he would get off before it pulled out. When the train started he ran to the rear end of the coach, but found the vestibule locked. Hurrying to the other end he attempted to alight, but his coat caught in some manner and he was dragged for some distance over the ties. The ambulance conveyed the injured man to the hospital, where he now lies in a semi-conscious condition. It was stated at the hospital that he may recover if no serious internal troubles develop.

H. C. Saunders who pleaded guilty to burglarizing a store at Orange together with Harry Bancroft, and who was sent to his home in St. Louis at the expense of the county, has written Judge West that he arrived at home on January 9th. He thanks Judge West for the fatherly advice he gave, and said he would ever remember the kindness shown him. The chief of police also writes Judge West that Saunders called on him the day after his arrival, and that he will do everything he can to place the young man in a good position. The young man has a good reputation in his home town, but seems to have got into bad company on the coast.
L. H. Hill and his wife will continue as superintendent and matron of the detention home. Though continuing to assert their belief that the detention home would be better off if the couple in charge had no children of their own, members of the board of supervisors admit that under the law the management of the home is in the hands of the juvenile court committee, with which the supervisors met on Friday. The meeting resulted from the refusal of the supervisors to reappoint Hill and his wife. The ground of refusal was that they had children of their own, and were bound by ties of kinship to give their children the best of it, as against the children sent to the home by the county. Judge West, who is in charge of the juvenile court, informed the supervisors that the committee had full charge of the internal affairs of the detention home, and that the supervisors could appoint none to manage it except those having the recommendation of the committee. The supervisors made the suggestion that it would be well to have managers who had no children. To this J. A. Cranston, president of the juvenile court committee, stated that the committee well knew that children might be a handicap, but out of seven applicants the committee preferred Hill and his wife with their two children, to any of the others, without children.

The merchants and manufacturers' association has taken steps looking to securing for Santa Ana a new form of government. At present the town is governed under the state law as a city of the fifth class. City officials and merchants have concluded that the restrictions are too numerous at present, and that Santa Ana should have a charter or adopt the commission form of government. At the annual meeting of the association G. W. Minter, E. D. Waffle and Jno. McFadden were appointed on a committee to gather information concerning the different forms of government under which it is possible for a city of Santa Ana's class to operate. The committee will report in February. The association elected as directors for 1911, E. B. Trago, Fred Parsons, John Beatty, N. A. Ulm, C. W. McNaught, E. B. Smith, A. E. White, N. Beisel and J. E. Liebig. The board organized by electing Smith president, McNaught vice-president, Ulm secretary, Beatty treasurer and H. J. Forgy attorney.

CONCERT JAN. 26
The Hungarian Stringed Quartette which has been appearing at the Garrick theater in San Diego, is to give a concert in Anaheim opera house on Thursday, Jan. 26. A San Diego critic has the following to say for them:
"They are accomplished performers on their queer looking but sweet toned instruments. They play with the touch of true artists, artists 'to the manner born,' and with an expression so characteristic of foreigners born and reared in a clime that fairly teems with music. These men are just as proficient in grand opera as in lighter compositions and were heartily enced at all performances."
Anaheim's music lovers may expect a treat when this organization appears.
