Hiram Beebe and wife from Minnesota are here visiting with relatives. Mr. Beebe is a cousin of Bird V. Beebe. W. H. West and wife, old-time friends of Mr. and Mrs. Simpson, spent several days here the past week as guests of that worthy couple. They are from Lincoln Center, Kansas, and are touring the coast. G. R. Cellar of Los Angeles, inspector of the postoffice department, was in town on Friday last paying an official visit to the postoffice. Mr. Cellar said it looked as if Anaheim would shortly have free city delivery. Miss Emma Kline who has been spending a three months' visit here with her sister, Mrs. P. Weisel, returned on Sunday evening to her home in Milwaukee. "Auf wiederschen," say her many friends. Prof. Carl Kreger has arrived from the East and has accepted a position as instructor of the brass band. Prof. Krieger is a soloist comparing favorably with the best in the country, and the band under his leadership will doubtless develop into one of the best in the state. He will teach classes in music, and has already a number of pupils. Simon Lybarger has plowed under four acres of vetch in his young valencia orange orchard east of town. Mr. Lybarger is creating one of the show places of the eastside, and his trees indicate by their luxuriant growth the careful attention he is giving the soil. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McLauchlin have made reservations for a tour of the world, and leave here Sept. 15 for Seattle, joining a party of tourists. They will be absent a year. They go to Japan, across Manchuria, Russia, and other points in Europe. They will visit Germany, France and Italy. The trip is undertaken for health and recreation, and a lengthy stay will be made in Italy. Mrs. Dickel returned on Thursday Arthur Finster of the U.S.C. is a visitor with the Heying brothers. Fritz Weisel came down from San Bernardino to spend the day with his folks, and — —. Mrs. C. O. Rust is in San Francisco visiting with friends. She will be absent a fortnight. Boss Crowther was in town on Saturday offering a premium for water company bonds. Capt. Schumacher wore an expansive smile on Monday morning as he drove into town after the glorious rain. M. Cook was in town this week from his ranch at the east side. Mr. Cook recently purchased twelve acres, and has been engaged in taking out eucalyptus and raspberry plants and setting the acreage to valencias. Levi Mann has a position in C. C. Chapman's packing house at Fullerton. He drives over every morning in his auto, accompanied by Mrs. Mann, who is one of the expert packers employed by Mr. Chapman, and they return in the evening. B. J. Snodgrass has sold 200 acres of timber land in Arkansas, and Damon Snodgrass has disposed of his team of high steppers, Dick the Great and Queen Isabel. Mr. Snodgrass and son contemplate a trip to Arkansas in the near future. Arne P. Abell, representing the Quaker Oats Co. of Chicago is demonstrating his firm's goods at J. W. Wallop's grocery. Mr. Abell was demonstrator for the same company at the Seattle fair and has acted in a like capacity in 22 states in the union. Creditors of the Folding Crate Co. met at the office of Melrose & Ames on Tuesday evening and discussed the plans for liquidating the company's in debtedness. It is probable that the creditors will vote to continue the plant, for which there appears to be a good opening here. The Christian Science society will hold its services in the opera-house instead of in the Masonic hall, as heretofore. Dr. Freeman will attend the state meeting of the G.A.R. next month at Oakland, and will at its conclusion proceed to Sacramento to attend a meeting of the state medical society. The doctor is a delegate to both. W. H. Kennedy was in town on Monday from his ranch in the west country. Mr. Kennedy has 350 acres in hay, and smiles when he hears that the week's two inches of rain tends to bring down the price of stocks on hand. Max Nebelung has been appointed census enumerator for Anaheim. He had been appointed school census marshal by the school trustees, but has declined the office, owing to his appointment as census enumerator. A list of enumerators for Orange county will be found in another column of this issue. J. N. Reeves and J. F. Hill, West Anaheim, on Thursday, April 7, for an all-day meeting, from 10:30 to 5 o'clock. Tomorrow (Friday) evening Lois Rebekah lodge gives its annual public card and dance party. A large number have vowed their intention of attending and a pleasant sociable evening is looked forward to. Mr. and Mrs. Wickett entertained at dinner on Friday a number of Canadian friends and members of their family to the number of twenty. After dining, the evening was enjoyed by a happy reunion. Carl F. Conway of Orange announces his candidacy in this issue for county treasurer, subject to the August primary. Mr. Conway is a lifelong republican. He is a rancher of Orange, and is qualified in every way for the office. O. Fulde and family depart for Chicago on April 11. They have resided here two and a half years, like this section, but return on account of family and business ties. The best wishes of many friends go with them. George Ziegler, Mrs. John Ziegler, Misses Elsie and Mabel Ziegler attended the Jersey picnic at Eastlake park on Friday. Mr. Ziegler was honored by election as president of the Anaheim division of the Jersey society of Southern California. Mrs. Bessie Farrar Madsen of Pendra Road, India, will speak at the Christian church next Lordsday evening. Mrs. Madsen is the missionary of the C.W.B.M. of Southern Californii and is now home on her furlough. An offering will be taken. All will be made welcome. Reeves have bought the Star theater and will take over the management of same tomorrow (Friday), giving their opening show in the evening of that day. The new proprietors are popular young men and have a large circle of friends here who wish them success in their new venture. The boys have many surprises in store for the public; it will be their aim to put on a first-class show for first-class people. The engagement is announced of Dr. W. Harold Wickett of this city and Miss Ethel Chapman, daughter of C. C. Chapman of Fullerton. Miss Chapman was queen of the Orange county carnival of products at Santa Ana a year ago last fall, and made many friends by her charming amiability and devotion to her loyal subjects. Dr. Wickett has won a capital prize in the matrimonial lottery and is receiving the congratulations of his many friends. The wedding takes place in June. A large rubber tree growing on the Nebelung place on South Lemon St. will probably have to be taken out as its roots interfere with the sidewalk. Mr. Nebelung says the tree was a large one 25 years ago, when he first saw it, and believes it must be not less than 35 years old. It stands several feet away from the walk, but its roots have disrupted the cement for a distance of twenty feet. Fayette Lewis of the Blue and Gold and Bobby McFadden of the Cardinals put up a fine exhibition of baseball in the game between Berkeley and Stanford on Saturday last. It was a thirteen inning struggle, Stanford winning by a score of 8 to 7. Capt. Lewis played a faultless game at the second bag and brought in one of the runs by a safe hit at a critical stage of the game. McFadden's single in the thirteenth brought in the run which robbed the U.C.'s of the laurels. Dwight Stone, the pitcher of the local baseball club, has been signed by Santa Ana, and will henceforth play in that city. Stone pitched six games for the locals, striking out 78 men and allowing 18 hits. This is an enviable record. The county-seaters have made a find. The game of baseball scheduled for Sunday afternoon between the locals and Goldsmiths of Los Angeles was postponed on account of rain. The game will be played on the local diamond next Sunday afternoon. Mrs. A. Nagel on Wednesday of last week received the distressing intelligence of the death, at Brookston, Indiana, of her father, Frederick Geyer, who was aged 72 years and 8 months. Mr. Geyer died suddenly, of heart failure. The remains were interred on Thursday. On Friday Mrs. Nagel received a letter from him, written the day before he died, in which he said he had been ill, but was better, and wrote a cheering letter.
