First rains of the season have fallen in the north, and the weather bureau early in the week prophesied showers for Southern California. No rain fell south of Tehachepi, and none is wanted for two months. Thousand of acres of beets, beans and other crops remain unharvested, and rain would do incalculable damage. The most favorable years we have had are those in which no rain falls until Thanksgiving.

R. Fossek has received several photographs of his son Emil, who is mining in Alaska. Emil had his picture taken in his winter togs, and looks like Peary.
Louie and Henry Kroeger were at the duck preserves on the coast on Sunday, picking out a place for the opening of the duck season tomorrow. Birds are said to be plentiful.
R. Melrose and daughter, Miss Winnie Melrose, returned on last Wednesday night's midnight train from the north, after a two-weeks' absence in San Francisco, Seattle and other up-country points.
On Wednesday evening, Oct. 6, the Young Ladies Sodality of the AnaheimCatholic church will assure you a good time at a card social to be given at the Odd Fellows' hall, Anaheim. Also will serve refreshments.

An interlocutory decree of divorce was given on Friday by Judge West to Gilbert C. Ivey against Lena M. Ivey, Head & Marks appearing for the plaintiff.
Property-owners on Center street between Palm and Citron are moving for pavement of that thoroughfare. Present paving contracts extend to Palm street.
Mrs. A. F. Dickinson, mother of George Dietrich, who has been visiting here for some months past, departed on Tuesday evening for her home in Minneapolis, Kansas.
Rev. Mitchell went to Los Angeles yesterday to attend the meeting.

The Anaheim Landing Mining development company has levied assessment of one-tenth of one per share. Charley Boege will join you all about it.
Gerald Sandilands will this week close the season's shipments of lencia oranges for the fruit association. He is sending out twelve loads, which go to Louisville, Kentucky City, Oklahoma and other points in the Middle West. The fire is of excellent quality, and good prices are being realized.
While blasting in a gravel pit near Fullerton, Alfred Stovall met with painful accident. After lighting fuse he waited a short time for it to go off. Not hearing the noise and believing the fire had gone out he went to relight the fuse, just as explosion occurred. Stavall lost the teeth and his eyes were slightly jured.

James Wool of Los Angeles, who was run down by an auto in that city some weeks ago, is improving and is able to be hauled about in an easy chair. Mr. Wool sustained the fracture of both bones at the ankle as well as the shoulder bone, but is convalescing.
Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Van Pelt and Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Purser of Los Angeles were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Konig. After dinner the party was taken in an automobile to view the country round about. Mrs. Van Pelt and Mrs. Purser will be remembered as Misses Lottie and Adela Dotter.
The Ladies Guild of St. Michael's of Anaheim will meet with Mrs. Geo Warren, Buena Park, Thursday, Oct 7. An all day meeting. The Southern Pacific cars stop within a very short distance of the house, and the Santa Fe within a mile. The members will be met there if word is sent to Mrs. Warren.

East Center street from the city hall to Atchison street has been excavated for paving. Yesterday asphalum was applied to the thoroughfare, beginning at Atchison street and proceeding west to a junction with the pavement at Claudina street.
M Barborka was in town the first of the week looking for a location to do business as a jeweler and watch repairer. He found the town well supplied and was unable to make a purchase, local business men refusing to sell. He returned on Tuesday to Pomona, where he will go into business.
The sophomores of the local high school have just completed their class organization. The following officers were elected: Walter Cadman, president; Aleida Heying, vice president; Henrietta Schindler, secretary and treasurer; Grace Adams, Helena Goodale, Aleida Heying, program committee.
Theodore Rimpau attained his eighty-third birthday on Tuesday. The event will be celebrated on Sunday by a family reunion and dinner at the home on Palm street. Mr. Rimpau has not had a day's serious illness in sixty years. He has been a resident of this section since 1866, and is hale and hearty as many men years his junior.
Judge West has been twice upheld by the supreme court the past week in cases tried by him in the superior court and carried to the higher tribunal on appeal. One case is that of Proud and other cabbage growers of Fullerton and Le Hubeur originates.

Edgar Hartung has accepted a position at the First National bank that will become one of the expert countants at that institution. Edgar has had several years' training in the banking business, having occupied a responsible position in the American National bank in Los Angeles. In absence of his father, who is wizard and cashier of the bank he will represent that gentleman in the affairs of the institution.

The senior and sophomore classes of the local high school, chaperone by Miss Hayler and Mr. Walker, joyed a delightful hayrack ride on day evening. The party drove to the home of Miss Ethel Cole, a member of the sophomore class. A la bonfire was lighted over which delicious coffee was made. Refreshments were served a la camp life, and later a pleasant evening spent in an open the party returned to Anaheim reaching the city in the wee hours, a tired but a happy crowd.
The Home Investment Company commenced building another residence on their tract this week.
Olmstead was seen by a representative of this paper and he informs that the company intends to build several more houses in Anaheim in Fullerton during the month of October. This company has shown wonderful progress in the last three months, having started their house and have at present on its office 26 applications homes in Anaheim and Fullerton Messrs. Olmstead and Jewell were in Fullerton and vicinity several days last week and report the sale of one siderable stock in that locality.
Olmstead left for Redlands Tuesday to place a large block of stock that city among his friends.

Merchants and townspeople should not overlook the fact that Anaheim will probably have free city delivery of mails next year, if receipts at the postoffice show necessary increase in business. The increase thus far since April is well above the mark, and a long pull, a strong pull and a pull altogether will land this adjunct of civilization. We must have free mail delivery. The year's business at the postoffice will tell the story. Anaheim now has five routes of rural mail delivery. We ought to place ourselves upon equal footing with our cousins in the rural districts.

The other was that of Isaac Martin and Marcella Webb against Lawrence and others. Judgment was for the plaintiffs and returned to them property of which they were defrauded.
Charles Alfred died at the Santa Ana hospital at 5 o'clock on Saturday morning, following an operation for appendicitis undergone three weeks before. Interment occurred on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence of J. Seeman on Atchison street. Two months ago Mr. Alfred, who was a popular young man some time ago arrived from Texas, was married to Miss Katie Secman of this city. His parents were telegraphed to and were at his bedside at the time of his death, as also was his young wife. In their bereavement the family have the sympathy of the entire community.
