One who rejoices in your joy, weeps with you in your sorrow, shares his last crust or sou with you if need be; sits at your fireside as he would his own; gives you the best of himself; encourages, praises or occasionally chides you; fights for you, trusts you; and if it would help you, would cheerfully die.

JUST A WHISPER
"Rare as is true love, true friendship is still rarer." So the poets tell us, and no doubt it is true, but what a joy it is to own a true friend.
One who rejoices in your joy, weeps with you in your sorrow, shares his last crust or sou with you if need be; sits at your fireside as he would his own; gives you the best of himself; encourages praises or occasionally chides you; fights for you, trusts you; and if it would help you, would cheerfully die for you. This is a friend—and like love, has a thousand meanings. And yet it is so often lightly said,"O, yes, he or she is a friend of mine."
There are many instances of ideal friendships between men—they seem more capable of them than women—and also many of them between men and women, the wiseacres and narrow-minded folk to the contrary; but they have and do exist today. and are most delightful, deep, sincere and true.
These friendships have nothing in common with the so-called "affinities" that are making such a stir in the world, as many may think.
To find the value of a true friend, let adversity knock at the door. If a friend, he helps with kindly deeds and few but beautiful words. But if a "fair weather" friend, he flies away at the call for help. What a shock it is to our vanity to learn that someone we have trusted and called friend is in reality worse than the one we have considered an enemy.
But after we have recovered from the shock it proves a most salutary lesson, for by it we learn to sift the grain from the chaff as never before, and to enjoy to the utmost our friend when we find him.
Like a rare flower, friendship must be cultivated properly to have perfect blossoms without thorns. They who are good friends are also good enemies, gighting in the open, scouring covert insinuations or a blow in the dark. In the language of poesy,"there is untold wealth in a friend"—if everyone would but believe it.

Nevada Mining District
The Hornsilver mining district in Esmeralda county, Nevada, is the subject of a short report by F.L.Ransome in the U.S.Geological Survey's Bulletin 380, entitled "Contributions to Economic Geology, 1908, part I." The town of Hornsilver, 26 miles southwest of Goldfield, stands at an altitude of 5900 feet above sea level on a gentle slope that opens northward into a broad, desert valley and is enclosed on other sides by hills. The principal mineral deposits lie southwest of the town, within a distance of a mile, and are developed mainly by a single mine, from which shipments of ore aggregating in value about $40,000 were made in 1908: The valuable contents of the veins are native gold and chloride of silver.
Mr. Ransome's report is included in an advance chapter from Bulletin 380, numbered 380-A, which may be obtained on application to the Director of the Survey.

Lands Open to Entry
Sacramento, June 20.—Surveyor General Kingsbury has sent a deed to Washington that is of the greatest interest and importance to thousands of settlers in California.
For 17 years the land office at Washington has held up all patents for land due the state in lieu of those granted California for its schools, pending a settlement of a claim by the federal government for 51,000 acres patented to California in excess of the land due the state under various statutes.
Surveyor Kingsbury has announced that the federal government had agreed to the following compromise:
The question of the lands received before 1877 is to be left to the courts to decide, the federal government to sue the state. The acreage involved is 13,568. The rest of the land claimed by the federal government was desired in detail by the Washington land office, and after checking it up here it was found that the state owed the national government 12,000 acres. A patent for that amount is now on its way to Washington.
WONDERFUL FLOWERING COVE
The island of Barbadoes, as is well known, is one of the smallest and yet the richest of the West Indies. The public knows it only as a great sugar mart. No sketch of this island that we have ever read contained any notice of the Annual Flowering Cove. The cove is situated on the southernmost end of the island, and is very difficult of approach on account of its being on the seashore, and the surf, which is very heavy, continually dashing up to its mouth. CALIFORNIA LEADS IN IMPORT ANT INDUSTRY
Increase During Last Year in Quantity and Price—Statistics Furnished by United States Geological Survey
[Contributed to The Gazette]
On February 3, 1909, the Geological Survey published a statement showing the general progress in petroleum production during 1908, according to which the phenomenal production of 1907 had been eclipsed in 1908 by a production of between 175,000,000 and 180,000,000 barrels. The Survey is now compiling the final figures for 1908, which will show that the total production aggregated 179,572,479 barrels, valued at $129,706,258, an increase in quantity of 8.11 per cent over 1907. Oklahoma led all the States in production, with a total of 45,798,765 barrels, an increase of 5.23 per cent over 1907; California was a close second, with 44,854,737 barrels an increase of 12.85 per cent over 1907; but Illinois gained the greatest percentage, rising from 24,281.973 barrels in 1907 to 33,685,106 barrels in 1908, a gain of 38.72 percent. Colorado, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Utah, Wyoming, and West Virginia also showed gains in production. The declines were in Indiana, where it was nearly 36 percent; in Kansas 25 per cent, Ohio 11 per cent, Texas 9 per cent, Pennsylvania nearly 6 per cent, New York 4.3 per cent, and Kentucky and Tennessee 11 per cent.
The average price of petroleum for the entire country in 1908 remained identical with that in 1907, but there were considerable variations of an important character in individual states.
Drying preparations simply develop on dry catarrh; they dry up the secretion which adheres to the membrane and decays pose, causing a far more serious trouble than the ordinary form of catarrh. All drying inhalants, fumes, smokes and snuffs and use that which cleanses, soothes and heals. Ely's Cream Balm will mask catarrh or cold in the head easily and pleasantly. All druggists sell the 50 cents size. Ely Brothers, 56 Warren Street New York.
The Balm is used without pain, does not irritate or cause sneezing. It spreads it over an irritated and angry surface, relieving immediately the painful inflammation. Ely's Cream Balm contains no cocaine mercury nor other harmful drugs.

DRY DOCK AT PEARL HARBOR
The contract for constructing the government's immense dry-dock at public knows it only as a great sugar mart. No sketch of this island that we have ever read contained any notice of the Annual Flowering Cove. The cove is situated on the southernmost end of the island, and is very difficult of approach on account of its being on the seashore, and the surf, which is very heavy, continually dashing up to its mouth. At the time we visited the cove the sea was unusually quiet. Our party consisted of ten—four white persons and six negroes. Only one of the party had ever visited the place, and he, true to his nature, told such wonderful stories about it that our curiosity was excited to the highest pitch. The cove is noted for containing flowers which are sensitive to the slightest sound made by human beings. Upon our arrival at its mouth and some twelve feet from it, we stopped rowing and took a survey of the cove and flowers. From that distance it presented a view of a room some thirty feet square and fifteen feet in height. The flowers, of which there were upward of a hundred, resembled the violet in shape but not in color, being pure white.
After viewing them for a short time, we pulled into the cove in hopes of obtaining some of them to carry home with us, but were disappointed. The moment we entered they all disappeared. We struck at them with the oars, but could not get one of them, as they instantly disappeared at the first sound or movement. We remained upward of two hours trying to obtain a specimen and were then compelled to leave, as the surf began to break into the cove, making it extremely dangerous to linger.
Strange stories are told of this remarkable cove by residents of the island, of persons who have gone to visit the cove and never returned. The negroes, especially, regard it with superstitious awe, and many of them cannot be prevailed upon to go anywhere in its vicinity. During our stay of two months on the island we never had another opportunity of visiting the cove.—Traveler.
DRY DOCK AT PEARL HARBOR
The contract for constructing the government's immense dry-dock at Virginia also showed gains in production.
The most notable of these was the increase in price in California, from 7 cents a barrel in 1907 to 52 1-4 cts. a barrel in 1908. The Gulf States, Louisiana and Texas, showed a decline in value, from a little over 80 cents to 60 cents. The Appalachian oil showed a slight increase in value, from $1.75 in 1907 to $1.79 in 1908. On the whole, prices were remarkably steady considering the notable increase over the large production of 1907.
The in creased activity in the three great fields—California, Oklahoma, and Illinois—was the dominant feature of the situation rather than the discovery and opening of any considerable new fields. The principal new field to gain prominence was the Caddo pool, in northwestern Louisiana. The hoped-for increase in production from the Markham and Goose Creek fields in Texas did not materialize, and the total from the State showed a decline in spite of the increased production in the Humble pool. In the Appalachian field 7115 new wells were drilled, of which 5292 were producers, with a total initial production of 55,002 barrels; in the Lima-Indiana region 1250 new wells were drilled, of which 1088 were producers; in the new Illinois field 3574 wells were drilled, of which 3019 were producers, with an average initial production of 26 barrels a well. In the Mid-Continent field 3490 wells were drilled, of which 2587 were producers of oil, 471 were producers of gas, and 432 were dry; the initial production of the producing wells averaged 83.7 barrels. In the Gulffield only 819 new wells were drilled, 606 being producers and showing an initial production of 297 barrels. In California 617 wells were drilled, of which 594 were productive, and in other parts of the country 44 wells were drilled, yielding 24 new producers. From the total of 13,210 productive wells drilled, the initial production was 42.9 barrels.

DRY DOCK AT PEARL HARBOR
The contract for constructing the government's immense dry-dock at Pearl Harbor, near Honolulu, finally goes to a San Francisco firm through the inability of the lowest bidder to furnish a bond for the completion of the work. The San Francisco Bridge Company's bid was the next lowest, being $1,723,000 in amount. The figure is considered reasonable, in view of the conditions which prevail at Pearl Harbor and Honolulu, where the cost of labor is high and material difficult to obtain.
Everything is now in readiness for beginning work, and it is hoped the dock will be completed within thirty-two months. The dock will be 620 feet long.
BATTLESHIP IS AGROUND
Rear Admiral Pillsbury has received private advices indicating that the damage to the battleship Michigan, which went aground on Saturday during her trial trip, is very slight.
Admiral McLean is on the Michigan representing the department. His dispatch says that the "Michigan touched bottom near Cape Cod and that the vessel had proceeded to Providence."
The Michigan is of the 16,500 ton type, a sister of the South Carolina, and ranks among the best battle-ships built or building.
SNAKE WORSHIPERS
Hutchinson, Kan., June 18.—An appeal has been made here to County Attorney Hettinger to break up a religious sect of snake worshippers at whose meetings women and children are said to have been bitten by poisonous reptiles.
The sect has about 33 members, who style themselves The true followers of Christ.
The members say the handling of snakes without receiving injury is a supreme test of grace.
It is said that at a meeting last Saturday two women and a child were bitten, the child being in a critical condition.
The authorities say they are powerless to act until a death results from the unusual practice.
FLOW OF RIVERS
Southern California rivers are flowing more than twice as heavy as at a corresponding time last year, according to statistics of the Geological Survey. The San Gabriel at Azusa shows 170 cubic feet a second, as compared with 80 last year; the Santa Ana river at Mentone, 110, as compared with 67 last year. The Colorado river, 77,100, as compared with 35,200 in 1908.
