NEW SEEDS, PLANTS, MELONS
ANNUAL DISTRIBUTION READY TO BE MADE TO FARMERS
New White-Bush Squash Larger than Old Variety—Danver's Yellow Globe Onion—Lettuce—East Indian Musk Melon—New Apples—Act Promptly
The agricultural experiment station of the university of California has issued its annual bulletin upon the Distribution of Seeds and Plants, a copy of which has been received at this office. The bulletin is by Prof. E. J. Wickson and R. E. Mansell and will be found to be of great interest to farmers. Interest in this form of distribution of seeds and plants is growing, as is indicated by a tabulated statement included in the report. We quote from the bulletin as follows:
The weak point in the distribution is that too many recipients forget the obligation they assume, viz.: to report the results of their trials of the plants which are introduced to them. It is desirous to know of both successes and failures, of both value and worthlessness found in the plants, in order that their behavior in the hands of the cooperating experimenters may be clearly made out.
To reduce as much as possible the vast amount of correspondence which is entailed upon the station by the distribution, it is desirous that the following points should be carefully considered by the applicants:
First—Do not apply for things not mentioned in this bulletin. The university cannot usually supply the various types which we offered, the Cos or so-lettuce. Seed in pack postpaid.
Carter's Daisy Pea—peas which was offered but there mentioned and formal merit is claimed that the estimation of a correct one, for it has favor. Seed in packets paid.
Sutton's Champion Carrot—This carrot was first imported four years ago with many other varieties have been under trial, no hesitancy in saying of the very best kinds garden. Seed in packets postpaid.
East Indian Musk Melon is indebted to Mr. Rowala, director of the marketing syndicate, Quetta, India. Collection of seed of musk ties which are of striking importance in his country. They have late-maturing long-keeping have come to be called ones in distinction from loupe group. They are ed for a time after maturity to acquire the qualities native growers most highly them and they are so do the variety commonly grown country that some exert will be required to detect one can best handle and From the seed donated distribution has been given station at Tulare. The varieties are offered:
1. Sarda—notably a lily.
2. Herato Sarda—yellow.
To reduce as much as possible the vast amount of correspondence which is entailed upon the station by the distribution, it is desirous that the following points should be carefully considered by the applicants:
First—Do not apply for things not mentioned in this bulletin. The university cannot usually supply the things previously offered for distribution.
Second—It is required that the applicant pay a small amount for each article, partly to bear the cost of collection and distribution, but chiefly as a guaranty that he has not merely an idle desire for what can be had for nothing, but intends to make trial for a definite end and will report results.
Third—Applications may be made for one or more kinds of seeds, but an applicant should not order more than one package of a kind. If the supply of any kind of seed becomes exhausted the money will be returned, unless a second choice is mentioned by the sender. Postal notes are requested instead of stamps, whenever practicable. Any surplus left after filling orders will as far as possible, be returned to the senders, deducting letter postage.
Garden Vegetables:
Large White Bush Squash.—This variety is a selected form of the ordinary White Bush Scallop Squash and is much like the parent form except that the fruits grow to a much larger size and are also borne in greater profusion. The stock has been rigidly selected for the two qualities just mentioned, and this year, the third selection, the type seems to be quite fixed.
The variety known as the Mammoth white squash appears to be identical with this, but the station offers their seed because a comparison has shown the selection to be certainly superior in point of productiveness. The seed has been saved from typical well-ripened fruits, none of which had a diameter of less than nine inches. Seed in packets 5c each postpaid.
As a general purpose onion Manthem and they are so do the variety commonly grown country that some exert will be required to detect one can best handle and From the seed donated distribution has been given station at Tulare. The varieties are offered:
1. Sarda—notably a L.
2. Herato Sarda—yellow
3. Gol Gurma—round,
4. Sufed Maghaz—white
5. Sabz Datewala Very sweet.
6. Yellow Gurma—round
The collection for 20c varieties for 10c; or a s for 5c postpaid.
New Apples Approved County.—The station is Albert F. Etter of Bricelboldt county, for a general supply correspondents will several new apples which found notably good in his on his place at Ettersburg becoming an important ing region. He describes ties offered as follows:
Mank's Codling. Medium yellow with blush cheek in white, fine grained, very never gets mealy; abun juicy and ranks high as fruit. Season August 15th.
1. Tree dwarfish, compact and a good bearer. Record gardens where space is large.
Reinette Ananas.—Below size, deep yellow, resemble light-colored orange; very and high flavored; new mealy. Splendid sort for preserving and kitchen use; also fine for cider and though rather tart. Season 20th to January 1st.
Good grower and bearer. Be desirable for home warmer parts of California.
Northfield Beauty.—Resem纳an in tree and fruit, with Gravenstein; quality not as acid as Gravenstein and holds flavor well for apple. Should be a desirable for either home use or m dessert fruit.
As a general purpose onion, Danver's Yellow Globe has long been considered one of the best. It is a variety of nice appearance, fair size, good keeping qualities and its flavor is of that mild order which is considered desirable in California. It is the yellow kind commonly grown for market purposes, and is also one of the best selections which can be made when the bulbs are desired for one's own consumption.
A series of onion tests conducted on the central station grounds at Berkeley, has forcibly brought out the fact that this variety differs widely with the different seed stocks which are upon the market, and that the various strains have very unequal merit. Seed in packets 5c each postpaid.
Sutton's Black-seeded Brown Bath Lettuce.—One of the difficulties which faces the amateur gardener in making a wise selection of varieties, lies in the multiplicity of choice which is afforded him. To assist the people of California in making their choice of a lettuce variety, we grew at Berkeley last year about fifty of what we considered the best kinds. This year the seed of only one of the
