WHAT'S DOING IN POLITICS WILL WE HAVE ESTUDILLO FOUR YEARS HENCE Action of the Push in Santa Barbara — Ventura District Warning of What Voters May Expect in the Thirty-ninth League and Machine Run Neck and Neck. The action of the push in nominating Roseberry in the Ventura-Santa Barbara district, over the protest of delegates from the former county, warns us that the machine will probably try to do the same thing to us with Estudillo four years hence. It was Ventura's "turn" at naming the senator, but the machine preferred to name one of its own creatures rather than the anti-machine candidate named by Ventura. Precedent was cast aside, the machine rode rough shod over the rights of delegates. It was the same old story which the people of California have become used to, but which they propose to stand no longer. Four years hence, we have no hesitancy in stating, Estudillo, in the improbable event of his election, will be forced upon the Thirty-ninth district again. There is no more pliant railroad tool in the district than he. The machine has shown us it can nominate him even when a majority of delegates were instructed not to support him, and it will nominate him again if it feels so disposed to do. There is work ahead for those enlisted in the cause ofchine at Santa Cruz. Perhaps in all the political devils ever practiced by any party, the Sacramento business, says Pomona Times, is the basis and most shameless. By this means the Sacramento delegation to State convention will be machine whereas had the test been pledge to vote for Taft, the city would be represented in the state convention by Lincoln-Roosevelt Republicans—Republicans on principle. In Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, the same machine would not permit primaries, but order of the head of the machine the county central committees pointed the forty delegates, utter ignoring the rights of the people say who should represent them. By these and other similar methods, the Southern Pacific's litical machine will have a major in the state convention; by a squared deal in the primaries the Lincoln-Roosevelt Republicans would have secured a big majority of it. Every Lincoln-Roosevelt Republican will vote for the Taft electors although their necks may not be made with wearing the Southern Pacific political collar. But a day of reckoning is sure come as sure as day follows night. The "solid three" of the Los Angeles board of supervisors no long is solid. Patterson and Wilson have gone down to deserved defeat. O'Eldridge remains and he should ta warning from the fate of his friend Patterson and Wilson brazenly fled public sentiment and protected race track gambling at Ascot Park. There is no more plant railroad tool in the district than he. The machine has shown us it can nominate him even when a majority of delegates were instructed not to support him, and it will nominate him again if it feels so disposed to do. There is work ahead for those enlisted in the cause of clean politics. The vista of political affairs reveals an ever-changing kaleidoscope of political support, which engage the attention of the politician, and which challenge the thoughtful consideration of the voter and taxpayer. This Estudillo business four years hence is one of them. Yet we think he will be so badly skinned election day that he will be in the seer and yellow leaf when the next district convention assembles. Quen sabe? Perhaps as the delegates enter the convention hall, Estudillo may be selling tamales without the portals. Stranger things have happened. Well may the political machine in California cry, with Phyrrus, "Another such victory and I am done!" Carrying Los Angeles county by less than 1 percent in the recent primaries, another four counties of San Francisco, Alameda, Los Angeles and San Diego combined by less than one-half of one per cent, the machine, it will be seen, was closely pressed by anti-machinists, throughout the state. In Sacramento probably 3000 anti-machine Republicans, were absolutely disfranchised by foul work on the part of the machine. The executive committee of the State Central Committee, under control of the Southern Pacific, did everything in its power to prevent the Lincoln-Roosevelt Republicans from voting at the primaries last week and they succeeded in many counties of the state by means thoroughly dishonorable. The vote in the nine assembly districts of Los Angeles county stands: Machine 10,151. Lincoln-Roosevelt 8,435. Machine majority 1,716. In the counties of San Francisco, The "solid three" of the Los Angeles board of supervisors no longer is solid. Patterson and Wilson have gone down to deserved defeat. O'Eldridge remains and he should warn from the fate of his friend. Patterson and Wilson brazenly fled public sentiment and protected race track gambling at Ascot Park. A petition signed by 15,000 citizens was presented to the board asking that the supervisors pass an ordinance prohibiting race track gambling in Los Angeles county. Ew leading civic and commercial organization in Los Angeles also asked relief from the intolerable condition brought about by race track gambling. The case was fully present. There was no question about why the people wanted. They demanded the extinction of the race track e Patterson and Wilson heard and understood, yet they stolidly ignored the will of the people. With aid of Al Graham, then a member of the board, they figuratively slapped the people in the face, insulted and defied them. They placed their trust in the Southern Pacific bosses rather than in the people, and in so doing they lost. Graham "got his" years ago. Now Patterson and Wilson follow Graham into political livion. Patterson and Wilson later deserted the people in planting saloons all along the line of the aqueduct. In they were assisted by Eldridge, who succeeded Graham. This was another count in the indictment against Patterson and Wilson, and was a factor in their forced retirement from the board. A lesson may be read, in the opinion of the Express, in the downfall of these men that all other officers will do well to heed. The people have good memories. Political bosses no matter how strongly backed a party machine, can not save from destruction the public servant who defies and ignores the people. Honest, now, Mr. Machine Man, you consider the primary test in S ramento county, whereby 3000 a machine Republicans were disf everything in its power to prevent the Lincoln-Roosevelt Republicans from voting at the primaries last week and they succeeded in many counties of the state by means thoroughly dishonorable. The vote in the nine assembly districts of Los Angeles county stands: Machine 10,151. Lincoln-Roosevelt 8,435. Machine majority 1,716. In the counties of San Francisco, Alameda, Los Angeles, and San Diego the vote stood: Machine 35,207. Lincoln-Roosevelt 34,844. Machine majority 365. Considering the power of the machine and an unscrupulous use of it, the Lincoln-Roosevelt Republicans have reason to rejoice at what they have accomplished. Had primaries been called in all of the counties, there is not a doubt but that the machine would have been wiped out. The Southern Pacific's political machine deliberately disfranchised 2000 or more Taft voters at the Sacramento primaries as the report comes through the papers. This hypocritical machine professes to stand for Taft, although its state executive committee refused to endorse Taft long after the Lincoln-Roosevelt Republicans had pledged their support to him. The report is that the machine forced all voters at the Sacramento primaries, August 11, to subscribe to an oath that they had voted for Governor Gillett in 1906, well knowing that from 2000 to 3000 staunch Sacramento Republicans voted for Bell as their only means of condemning the infamous methods of the ma- Honest, now, Mr. Machine Man, you consider the primary test in Sacramento county, whereby 3000 machine Republicans were disfished a fair one. Would you have stood the test of the course had time admitted of a trial on count of competent jurisdiction? It fair to go back two years and a voter upon oath whether or not he voted for Gillett for governor. You know it was not fair. You knew it, Mr. Machine Man, that 3000 publicans in Sacramento county resided to stand for Gillett and voted against him. A voter offering his ballot at primary may be largely pledged as his party affiliations with the future but not as to those of the past. might have voted the Democratic ticket since Jackson's time, but he be ready to pledge his support for the Republican ticket next vember, he is entitled to vote as Republican primary. The party comes all such. But, you say, you could not "won out" without such tactics, Machine Man. Right well done people know it. In a poll of 70,000 Republican votes in counties at the primaries, your majority was 365—one-half of 1 percent. It was indeed necessary for to bring into the fight all sorts scullduggery in order to win, as Cruz. In the political deviltry by any party, this business, says the law, is the basesteless. By this means delegation to the union will be machine, and the test been a War Taft, the city would win in the state conven-ion-Roosevelt Republicans on principle. Riverside and San Bernal, the same machine unit primaries, but by head of the machine, central committees aptly delegates, utterly rights of the people to represent them. And other similar base Southern Pacific's power have a majority invention; by a square primaryes the Lincoln Republicans would big majority of it. Roosevelt Republican the Taft electors even backs may not be raw the Southern Pacific's reckoning is sure to day follows night. "Free" of the Los An-supervisors no longer son and Wilson have deserved defeat. Only sons and he should take the fate of his friends. Wilson brazenly deiment and protected obling at Ascot Park. Led by 15,000 citizens to the board asking you did by the very epidermis covering your molar. But the people are ready and anxious to fight you again. They will take a fall out of you, Mr. Machine Man, in 1910, or we miss our guess. Right principles are immutable and eternal! The right remains right and the wrong remains wrong, whatever defeat the one may temporarily encounter, whatever victory the other may for the time achieve. The usurpation by the Southern Pacific railroad of the political power of this sovereign state has been challenged this year for the first time since the present constitution became in 1907 the organic law of California. An organization of sincere republicans, whose affection for their party amounts to reverence, whose love of the state constitutes a devotion, was formed within the republican party itself, exclusively of republicans, for the sole purpose of achieving the rescue of the party from the control of a corrupt railroad machine and restoring to the state its sovereign right to rule itself. This movement was instituted for this purpose alone. The interests of individuals. the acquisition of offices were matters with which, as truthfully pointed out by the Express, the Lincoln-Roosevelt League of Republican clubs did not concern itself except in so far as they affected the great clean purpose for which the league was organized. The pledge was made to those whose co-operation was invited, whose aid was solicited, that when the primaries had been held and the several conventions had completed their labors, the League would suspend its activity until the advent of LOSSES TO CATTLEMENT Larkspur Poisoning on Nationalests—Serious Problem Now fronting the U.S. Government The losses to cattlemen in eastern states from larkspur poison every year have been so serious that the government is making a vigorous effort to find an antidote for poison, as well as to eradicate plant itself. In the Gunnison National Forest the losses to the stockmen last son from larkspur were consistently estimated to equal 5 per cent of the total number of cattle upon that forest. Its effects are almost immediate Death follows the eating of these within a few hours. For this son remedies are of little avail cause the animals are generally before they are discovered. Experts from the Bureau of Industry, in co-operation with Forest Service, have made o and painstaking investigations of field, with a view of lessening losses as far as possible, whileeral different plans have been in hopes of completely destroying plant. Larkspur grows very luxuriant in the early spring. On the Gun Forest in June, 1908, the foresters counted more than 1300 plains blossom upon a single square rooft plant seems to be more poisonous hot, damp weather than in dry sons, and it has been observed when the ground is nard and d that in eating it the stems break leaving the roots in the ground is not so deadly in its effect. In areas are well known destruction of the range is only a question of time. Range improvements in National forests is one of the chief objects of regulating the grazing. For this reason the forest service is leaving no stone unturned to prevent range deterioration. Stockmen who had suffered heavily from the prairie dog pest were solicitous to have the work taken up and gladly offered to cooperate with the service in furnishing men and horses to distribute the poison. To ascertain what success could be had in ridding considerable areas of the pest, a selection was made of parts of the Leadville and Pike National Forests which were badly infested. The region in these forests upon which the dogs were located aggregated 300 square miles or more. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the work an area of some 60 or 75 thousand acres of actual dogtown was selected for the test. From 80 to 90 per cent of the dogs were killed with the first distribution of the poison. It will be necessary to go over the ground the second time and by "spotting" the occupied holes the remaining dogs will easily be killed with a very small amount of the poisoning material. The average cost per acre for the poisoning material was only one and one-half cents, and even then it was found that more material had been used than was necessary. The poison is prepared by coating wheat with a preparation of strychnine, cyanide of potassium, anise oil, and molasses. When a sufficient quantity is ready the poisoned wheat is carried to the field of operations. There the stockmen supply men and horses ,the wheat is given out to On the Gunnison June, 1908, the forest officated more than 1300 plants irriving a single square rod. Walnut growers of El Monte have decided to use a salt solution process for bleaching nuts instead of chlorine. The sum of $1500 was voted to defray the expenses of installing the necessary machinery in time for this season's crop. Professor Stabler, of the University of Southern California, examined the new process, which is very simple, consisting essentially of a salt solution through which a current of electricity is passed. He advised the orchardists that it is not patented. It is now commonly employed in bleaching paper and textile goods, and has the pronounced advantage of being absolutely harmless. Should it penetrate the shell it would cause no injury. Whenever the chlorine bleach finds entry the kernel is rendered worthless. The estimated cost of the new bleaching is only about one-third of the old process. The season's crop in this district is expected to be the largest ever harvested and is conservatively estimated at seventy-five carloads of ten tons each. Last year but thirty-five carloads were shipped. Both old and young orchards are in heavy bearing and the crop will grade high. Blight is much less in evidence than in the past three years, and spring climatic conditions were favorable for pollination.
