IMPROVEMENTS FOR ANAHEIM
Citizens Signing for Paved Streets, Others Favor Sewers and Public Park.
Petitions are in circulation and are being universally signed by property owners favoring the paving of streets, and it is probable the city trustees will take the matter up and act upon it in the near future.
"Paved streets are what you need in Anaheim," said an eastern capitalist in town this week. "You have the busiest town of its size on the coast; you have a wonderfully rich agricultural country surrounding the city you have good sidewalks, fine fire protection, good street lights and good water, and the town is growing. You need one thing to attract the Eastern man looking for investment in California. Your green lawns, trees and flowers are beautiful, but your streets are bad. You should advocate paving and the business men should put shoulder to the wheel and push paving along."
Our people seem to have taken this view of the situation for the petitions in circulation are being signed by every business man in the city. The Chamber of Commerce means to have paving done before the winter's rains set in. More power to the elbow.
While our people generally favor paving, others who approve paving, are also desirous of constructing a sewer system and laying out a public park. Each is an excellent undertaking and should be taken up by our public-spirited citizens.

While our people generally favor paving, others who approve paving, are also desirous of constructing a sewer system and laying out a public park. Each is an excellent undertaking and should be taken up by our public-spirited citizens.
As showing what other towns smaller than Anaheim, are doing in the way of park improvements, the following reported Upland enterprise is handed in by a subscriber. Upland is a town about half the population of Anaheim:
"Upland, Aug. 18.—The $50,000 issue of road improvement bonds voted in this city several months ago has been sold to N. W. Halsey & Co., of San Francisco and New York. The successful bid was $50,916. N. W. Harris & Co., of Los Angeles, bid $50,675, and the First National Bank of Upland offered $50,900. Considering the present condition of the money market the premium on the issue is considered a good one. Interest accrues from date of acceptance. Only a few more preliminary steps are necessary to put under way the important work of improving the highways. It is probable the improvement carried by Ontario to the Santa Fe tracks will be there taken up by this city and extended to the northern city limits, Twenty-fourth street. This would give to this colony seven miles of almost perfect roadway, to say nothing of the finest avenue, perhaps, in Southern California.
For Public Park.
"The sentiment in favor of securing a public park is gaining rapidly. The site proposed is ten acres of the Stewart land, south of Eleventh street and just east of Campus avenue. Two citizens have offered to donate $1000 each."

WASHINGTON, Aug. 23.—The attention of the experts of the Bureau of Plant Industry in the Department of Agriculture, has been called to the claims being made and extensively advertised in California for an alleged cure for pear blight.
This cure consists in treating the trees with a substance which enters into the sap and is said to prevent the development of blight. The claims made for the treatment have been investigated by the department experts and orchards which have been under treatment for two years by the method have been examined with the result that trees were found to be in very bad condition with hold-over blights. The only effect which the treatment seems to have had on trees is to retard their growth, and as a result of this the blight makes less active the development.
